Prologue

The journey to Elysia had been a long one, but the botanist, Aelion, was finally here. Elysia, one of the four countries of Lumia, was a land of mystery and intrigue, a large crescent-shaped continent that cradled an underwater country close to its heart. As a botanist, Aelion had the freedom to traverse these lands, and her current quest was to explore the renowned Crystal Caverns, home to the legendary Gemroot.

Lumia was a continent like no other, with its unique geography and diverse nations. The underwater country, with its aquatic secrets, was a realm she hoped to explore one day, but for now, Elysia captivated her senses. The country’s landscape was rugged and rocky, with underground cities that shone with the ethereal light of bioluminescent flora. The Nocturne, the magical inhabitants of this land, added to the otherworldly atmosphere with their bat-like features—leathery wings, webbed ears, and glowing eyes.

As she ventured towards the Crystal Caverns, Aelion’s curiosity and excitement grew. Her guide, a Nocturne with big pink eyes, brown wings, and a medium build, wore glasses that magnified their captivating eyes. Scribbling in her research book, Aelion captured the unique features of her guide, their clawed fingers and short brown hair adding to the intriguing image.

“How much longer until we reach the caverns?” Aelion asked, unable to contain her enthusiasm any longer. The guide smiled, their teeth a brilliant contrast to their dark features, and pointed towards a gaping opening in the mountain’s side.

“Just up there,” they replied. “You’ll be able to explore and research to your heart’s content. May I ask, Miss Aelion, what your research entails? Your passion is intriguing.” The soft accent of the Nocturne added a musical lilt to their words.

Aelion closed her book, a grin spreading across her face as she shared a bit about her work. “I’m always on the lookout for new plants that can be utilized in various ways. household uses, remedies, and potions are my specialty. I’m hoping to create something truly special with the plants unique to Elysia.” She paused, glancing down at the sketches and notes in her book. “The Gemroot, in particular, is said to increase strength and endurance. I can’t wait to study it further.”

As they walked, Aelion’s eyes flitted across the pages of her book, taking in the images she had sketched of the Sleepwillow Leaves and Twilight Bloom, two other plant samples she had collected during her time in Elysia. She hoped to create a new sleeping medication, one that would harness the natural properties of these plants.

Suddenly, without even realizing it, they had reached the cavern’s entrance. The air felt heavier, thicker, and as Aelion looked up, she found herself standing in awe.

“Oh wow, look at this place,” she whispered, her voice echoing slightly in the vast space. Crystalline roots hung from the ceiling like glittering stalactites, and withered crystal trees adorned the walls, their once-vibrant forms now dormant. Large rock formations, cracked and shimmering, added to the otherworldly beauty.

Aelion quickly slipped her backpack off her shoulder and retrieved her gloves, pick, scissors, and sample bags. With eager hands, she began to break off portions of the crystalline roots, carefully placing each sample in her bag.

“This is perfect, thank you so much!” she exclaimed, her voice echoing in the cavern. “I can’t wait to get these back to my lab.” She turned to her guide, a smile of satisfaction on her face. “We can head back now, Toni. I’ve gathered more than enough for my research.”

The return journey to the Moonlit Bazaar was swift, and Aelion bid her guide farewell with a sense of satisfaction and anticipation. As she entered her hotel, her mind was already spinning with the possibilities of her research.

The chiming of her phone startled her from her thoughts, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw the notification. It was Vorrik, her lover, the man she had met during her travels, with whom she shared an intense and passionate connection.

‘Have you made it to Elysia?’ his message read.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she replied, her heart racing. ‘Yes, can’t wait to see you later.’ She felt a familiar warmth between her legs as she anticipated their upcoming encounter.

Vorrik and Aelion’s relationship was a complex one. They had met during her travels, and there was an instant spark between them—an irresistible force that drew them together. It was a friends-with-benefits situation, although the ‘friends’ part was often overshadowed by the intensity of their physical connection. he was a man of few words, guarded and mysterious, but she had fallen for him nonetheless.

‘I’ll be there in an hour. Be ready for me,’ Vorrik replied, his message sending a shiver down Aelion’s spine.

The anticipation and desire were palpable as she prepared for his arrival, the promise of their passionate reunion fueling her actions.
