According to myth, time in Yang Shao's world is split into kalpas. It is said that a "kalpa" is the amount of time it would take to turn the highest mountain in the world into the lowest valley by brushing its peak with a small silk handkerchief once every 100 years. When the gods walked amongst mortals, they reportedly said that this is the 45th kalpa.
According to philosophers from the Silver Hawk continent, a kalpa is the approximate lifespan of a universe. They say that, at the beginning of a kalpa, the universe is created in a massive explosion. On the other hand, at the end of a kalpa, the universe collapses in on itself to a point of infinite density.

It is said by some that not even cultivators that have attained true immortality can survive the end of a kalpa, but the gods have become so ingrained into the very fabric of reality itself that they can survive even the end of the universe.
Some say the current kalpa is coming to an end, and that is why the gods no longer live upon the planet. They say that humans have lived on this world for so long that the stars are dying out and the gods have fled to the darkest reaches of space to prepare for the end of the universe.
