12-Made Maid

Afgar the dwiff gave the dragon boy a stink eye as his drained a flagon for an uncounted time. Dragon boy wasn’t paying attention, there had been so much drinking.

“I’ll take a look at this sabre later. Soul switching, if that stinky lord got his hand on that bastard may still be alive. Give me the chills. I got work to do, though, mysteries can wait.” Afgar said.

“No, a bunny girl told me so,” said the dragon boy.

“You’re kidding me. That soul counter, I can’t tell you why that keeps going up. There’s my friend in the royal capital, Arga, she can tell you. Old bat is the only one I know who’s dealt with country-class weapons like that enough to say. Hold off on using it, if you can. Nice work on that lord! Mi’lord!” Afgar laughed, sending off the dragon boy and catgirl.

“Juno, what is it?” Ralphos noticed her looking at him, emerald eyes glazed over. He didn’t do anything wrong this time did he? After last night, what could be wrong?

“Come with me, okay?” Juno said. She pulled Ralphos by the hand under a bridge by the riverside they were at earlier. Ralphos didn’t resist, her demeanor serious now.

“Fine, fine.”

It’s dark under the bridge, Juno checked to see that no one was around, then turned to him, her hands behind her back.

“You’re like another world to me. Do you remember, when I said I wanted to go to another world?” Juno said. Ralphos stayed silent.

“An exchange. You can’t go to the royal capital with that name. I don’t want to call you Ralphos anymore, either. Ralphos died, a long time ago, you’re not him. I didn’t tell you enough about the goblin prince, about Xethos. I said he ran away, that’s not exactly right. I don’t want to tell you everything, but you’re so clueless sometimes I just want to lead you around,” Juno said.

“Me, clueless? Well, this is another world to me after all...wait, I didn’t tell you that! I’m sorry!”

Juno laughed at him, white hair swaying in the wind.

“You don’t remember? You told me a little, about the god, ‘that’, your dragon wings, how could I not know? Maybe Saten beat you up too hard…”

“Oh. Good. It’s been busy. I’ve been pushing myself a little hard lately, haven’t I? I can take it, though,” Ralphos looked at his hand and felt the dragon strength twitch his fingers.

“Yeah. Yeah, you can. That makes me really happy. When I watched you get beat up by Saten, when I was looking at you from the ground, you looked immortal. You’re so cool.”

Juno smiled and looked down her eyes closed. Her tail made some swishes, her ears twitched.

“Then I got this ‘thing’ this morning from Escribo. I read it. ‘He’s not done getting stronger?’ I thought, and my heart was beating so fast. You’re never going to die, are you?” Juno said.

Ralphos’s little gears in his head were clicking and turning. ‘Don’t leave me’, is that what she wanted to say? She spoke up again, looking him in the eyes, her emerald eyes shining in the dark.

“I’m not pretty or confident like Saten. I don’t know magic, I got that new maid outfit because of you. I’ll treasure it. I’ll become someone who can stand behind you. You’ve taken everything from me, it hurts. An exchange, I don’t ask for much. Give yourself a new name, and let me serve you, as master and servant. I don’t know if you like that sort of thing, but I read a story once like that. I’ll call you master, my lord. That’s the only thing I’m confident I can do.” Juno said, her eyes shaking.

Ralphos considered it. She was Ralphos’s maid, but she wasn’t his maid. Now that he was a lord- No, forget that nonsense. She wanted to call him master. Ralphos rejoiced. He petted her on the head, smiling, as he made sure to not rustle her ears too much. She’s smiling now. Ralphos spoke to her after pulling his hand away.

“Don’t be so worried. I love you. I’m just taking everything I want now. The lordship? Who cares, I wanted Saten. The royal capital? I’m more interested in Laplas. That’s the bunny girl, I hope you can get along with her, she’s...probably not dangerous? Oh well. If you’re fine with someone like me, who’s running after his desires alone, that’s great. You’ll call me master, huh? I like you more like this. Even when you’re playing maid, don’t forget to be straightforward with me.” Ralphos said.

“Remember, I can tell when you’re lying,” he lied and smiled.

Juno looked at him, blushing and trembling, before hugging him and kissing him.

They wandered out from under the bridge after a bit. Juno had a smile like Saten’s on her face, walking a pace behind him, looking dignified. Ralphos felt excited, his heart pounding. Something about that, it felt like he hit something new with her. Was that the real Juno?

“A new name, huh. Thanks for the book. You said the fishman gave it to you? Wonder how he got this...isn’t it too nice a gift for someone like me?” Ralphos looked at the self-help note that looked like it was written just for him. Escribo, what a wonderful guy. Maybe now I can fly with those damn dragon wings, finally.

“Juno, what do you think? Draco? Dracon? D? Drake? D, you can’t have a name that’s one letter, that’s dumb. Maybe I should take something from this world, a name people will recognize.” Ralphos rambled.

“Master, you shouldn’t be so hasty. Consult with Saten and Brutus before deciding.” Juno’s tone had changed to a more dignified one. Prideful. Ralphos looked at her, walking calm behind him, eyes lazy, her posture erect.

“Hehe, you’re good. I agree. I’m not looking forward to seeing those three again.” Ralphos sighed.

“Saten?” Juno smiled, she knew he didn’t mean Saten.

“No, no, the three who beat us up, that we now have to make all friendly with to make the whole ruling the town thing work. I’m going to have a lot of enemies in the royal capital, far beyond my skill level in various disciplines as well. You ready, Juno?”

“I’ll make sure you crush them all,” Juno whispered. Ralphos laughed, turning forward with a grin on his face.

Meanwhile, at the castle, an entire corner tower collapsed a while ago. Ralphos would have seen and heard it if he wasn’t so busy with Juno. The beautiful castle, situated on a plateau in the center of the city surrounded by a redundant moat at it’s bottom was missing one of the towers entirely. Looking out from the inside to the out, Saten was trembling with Laplas beside her.

“I’m sorry. Ralphos, he’ll forgive me for sure, but the tax money, I’ve wasted so much of the economy of Locos for something like this…I can’t believe I lost my temper.” Saten said.

Laplas was looking out over the city, a dumb smile on her open mouth, her dropping black ears and tied hair blowing in the wind.

“Saints are so powerful. To think I almost took these attacks so many times! I would have died, would have died,” Laplas said.

“I’m sorry. When I saw you eating at the table here, I thought something was wrong. Ralphos should have told me he decided to let you go.” Saten said. She huffed, blaming everything on him. Laplas put a hand on her shoulder, comforting her. They had just met.

“When the Saints were hunting me down, they never stopped in my golem’s range. Ah, I love you!”

Saten looked at the bunny girl with the droopy black ears. She had black circles under her purple eyes, spent the night in jail, was holding an anime girl pillow, and looked like this was the first human contact she had in a while. Saten removed her hand off of her shoulder, Laplas’s smile went down as she gained distance. Saten’s guilt counter increased. Saten decided to abandon all action, so she left without a word, leaving Laplas who was staring out over the town in joy by herself.

“It’s so beautiful, the sun, the town! I haven’t seen the outside in ages. Poor Lord Ros, he’ll never enjoy this. Lord Ralphos, huh. I don’t know why, but I want to know more about him. That attitude, like he doesn’t worry about anything, so carefree, I wish I could be more like that…” Laplas said and sighed, sitting down with her legs hanging over the edge of the destroyed ground floor of the tower. She looked into the moat below, admiring the tower’s fallen remains.

“Huh, look Juno, a tower is missing. Must have been Saten. Maybe she missed me, what do you think?” Ralphos said that as he and Juno were approaching the castle.

“She doesn’t seem the type, master.” Juno said, dignified.

After the two of them reached the castle, a butler found Ralphos and approached them.

“Hmph, you prospect yourself as our new lord-”

Juno got in front of Ralphos, who watched her act.

“Saten told you, huh. Get back to work, the Lord has business. From now on, you will answer to me.”

“Excuse me madame, but who do you think you are? That clothing-”

“I’m the Lord’s mistress and head maid. The affairs of the house are mine. Do you have any complaint?” Juno said. The butler glanced to Ralphos, nodded politely and left.

They made their way inside, maids scurrying away. Looks like the house wasn’t in order. Juno moved to Ralphos front right.

“My lord, please excuse me. I will take care of the castle. Do you want me to order repairs for the tower?” Juno said.

“Ah, I don’t know too much about finances. Just leave it for now. Thanks, Juno.”

Ralphos made his way to the broken tower, whistling to himself. He wanted to check out the damage. When Saten said ‘she could tear this place apart’, Ralphos believed her. After taking so many hits and enjoying flight for the first time he knew that a castle or two wasn’t a problem for her.

“Who needs bombs when you have Saint’s around…” He pulled out his bulletblade, flipping the latch and looking at the lonely drive 3.

“I’ll get to you soon enough, Kingdom Crusher. I just don’t have a target, yet, is all. Got to be careful, last time it took out a mountain.” He muttered to himself, thinking of names again. Laplas was sitting on the broken floorboards, looking out over Locos. Ralphos made sure to make enough noise so that he wouldn’t scare her before he sat down, and looked out over the town with her in silence. She was holding the anime pillow that he saw her with that morning. They enjoyed the breeze together.

“Saten blew it up,” Laplas said.

“Figured. Why?”

“She thought I escaped from jail.”

“Oh. I like it. Castles usually have that stuffy quality, don’t you think?” Ralphos said. She looked at him with those purple eyes, then broke contact as he looked back.

“I’m a corrupted wizard. That’s how I got the bunny ears.”

“Really?”

“I’m not a good person.”

“Huh. Me either.” Ralphos said.

“I don’t lie, but I wish I did. I can’t really tell where honesty and lies split apart.”

“I lie whenever I feel like it.”

Laplas eyed him.

“I’ve killed people. It was horrible.”

“Got one myself the other day. Got thanked for it.”

Laplas sighed, long and steady in the air as her shoulders drooped.

“Is there any rule you follow?” She asked.

“The seat of the pants thing.”

“Aren’t you worried? Your tower just got destroyed.”

“Got it yesterday, big deal.”

“Think you’re going to be recognized as Lord of Locos at the royal capital?”

“We’ll see.”

“Seriously. You…” Laplas sighed.

“Something wrong?” Ralphos said.

Laplas stared out over the town, her face moody as she hugged the anime pillow.
