Chapter 10: The Mask [Part 1]

Tiger looked at the young man with wide eyes and asked suspiciously, “What will happen to Jack now?” Everyone’s gazes fell onto the young man who just gave a smile and said, “It will all be up to him.” Hearing this, everyone present gulped. Jack was someone that the Island Master had been keeping an eye on ever since Tiger had brought him back.

The only reason Jack was allowed in to the Hidden Dragon was because he allowed it. Also, before he headed out, he had given him two personally crafted limited use Artefacts. These were the blue and white sword. Each of them could release an attack that was on par with his half strength attack. Each sword could only be used three times so they were are true Life Saving Artefact.

Now, that same Island Master told them to forget him. This was what made them confused because the Island Master had even said that he would like to take him as a Legacy Disciple of his. Jack was a normal Disciple to Tiger, so he got the same amount of care as the others did. However, Legacy Disciples are people that have all their skills passed down upon.

The Island Master wished to put all of his focus on raising him and sparing no expenses so the current situation was very peculiar. However, no one dared to question his decision, so they started carrying out the full mobilization orders. After a while only Jack, Lust, Island Master and the Medicine Hall Ancestor were the only ones left there.

The young man looked at the Medicine Hall Ancestor and asked, “How is he?” The Medicine Hall Ancestor just sighed, “His vitals are all normal already and his wounds all show rapid healing. As to why he is still unconscious…. Even I have no idea on that part.” The old man was also helpless. He could heal physical wounds but he couldn’t see inside another’s head.

All of Jack’s wounds were nearly healed thanks to his high body refinement and the medicine he received when he was brought in. However, for some reason, Jack was still unconscious. If he had Soul Damage, then they could do something but his Soul was completely fine as well, so as far as they knew, they had no idea why he was still unconscious.

The young man thought for a moment and pulled out a bottle of pills from his Spacial Ring. He passed it to Lust and said, “It will help you rebuild your dantian.” He then pulled out a Disciple Tile and also passed that to her saying, “Go and see the Master of this Tile. She has been wanting to take you in as a Disciple of hers for a while now. Jack will be fine, so you focus on getting stronger from now on Sandra.”

The young girl’s eyes flickered as she looked at the young man and asked, “Island Master, why do you have so much trust in me?” The young man showed a mischievous smile as he said, “I don’t have trust in you, he does.” as he said that, his gaze fell onto Jack. Before Sandra could say anything the young man continued, “It is hard to earn the trust of someone that was thrown to the Ancient Battlefield to fend for himself. Since you were able to earn his trust, you are worth trusting.” Hearing this, Sandra was confused as she tilted her head to the side.

However, from the nostalgic gaze the young man had when he looked at Jack, she could understand that the exalted Island Master did not have an easy childhood. “Which powerful person did have a peaceful childhood.”

As she thought that to herself, she cupped her hands and looked at Jack for one last time before she exited the room to look for the person that wanted to take her as a Disciple. At the door, she stopped for a moment as she made a vow to herself, “Jack pulled me out of that solitary hell, the least I can do is take care of him from now on.”

Even though she was known as the most favoured Disciple of Blood Immortal, in her heart, she despised the Blood Immortal. She had been brought up by him for as long as she could remember and in the beginning, she had been quite affectionate of him. However, one day, she overheard a conversation between Blood Immortal and some weird old men over a Communication Formation.

In that conversation, she learned that Blood Immortal had seen her talent and taken her under his tutelage by force. The first people she had killed were actually her parents that he had imprisoned and kept alive just for this reason.

Thinking of all that, her world shattered and she developed another personality, Lust. This was what the Blood Immortal was after but what he did not know was that Lust was formed for the purpose of protecting Sandra. So when she first met Jack and Jack told her of his mission under Lust’s torture, Lust and Sandra agreed to help him out to get their revenge on Blood Immortal.

Jack couldn’t put down all the miniature Formations that would become a Teleportation Formation in one go, so he put some of them down, then “escaped”. After some time passed, Lust “captured” him again. And so the cycle continued until the last time when Jack had unexpectedly managed to get her out of there.

Even she had no idea how that happened. She knew that the Blood Immortal saw something very terrifying when he tried to search Jack’s memories. Jack used that thing to bargain their way out of there. However, she had no idea why Blood Immortal bowed his head like that but the good thing was that when Blood Immortal destroyed her cultivation, he also lost all control over her.

She was now a free person and all of that was owed to the one person lying on the bed. Even she herself did not know when she developed feelings for Jack but over time, she had sprouted true feelings for him. Making this resolution to always stay by his side, she left.

After she had left, the young man reached out his hand towards the Mask. However, before he could touch it, black flames scorched his hand. The young man looked at Jack with astonished gaze as he muttered, “To think that HE would choose Jack.” The Medicine Hall Ancestor looked at the Island Master with an astonished gaze as he immediately asked, “Are you alright sir?” The young man let out a chuckle as he said, “Interesting. Let me see whether Jack will be able to achieve what you couldn’t Abyssal Demon Emperor.”

After saying so, he swept his hand out and Jack was gently lifted from the bed. The young man looked at the Medicine Hall Ancestor and said, “If someone asks, I took him to the Island.”

Seeing the serious look the Island Master now had, the Medicine Hall Ancestor simply nodded his head. The young man closed his eyes and he disappeared together with Jack.

The last thing Jack could remember was giving Lust the instructions and after that he felt exceedingly sleepy. Although he knew that falling asleep was very dangerous, he could do nothing about it as his eyelids just seemed to close on their own.

When he “woke up”, he was inside an endless Hallway. On one side of the Hallway, were statues of Demons. Jack’s eyes opened wide because from their familiar aura, he realized that these were the Demons he had been able to control. Every Demon had it’s own statue but all these statues were grey and their aura was extremely weak as if they were hibernating. Moving his eyes to the other side of the Hallway, he realized that there was also a row of statues there.

However, these statues were coloured and brimmed with aura. They seemed very lifelike but they did not move and inch. First came men with long pointy ears. They had slender bodies but for some reason their skin had a dark hue. They were all wearing light armour and all these men were armed with a crossbow and a long knife.

After them came the same men, however, these ones were wearing green armour and were armed with a lance. What was most peculiar was that they were riding giant raptor like lizards. After these Lizard Rider’s came half man, half bull like people.

Their upper body was like a buff man’s however, instead of feet they had sturdy hooves and the head of a bull. They wielded dual axes almost as big as Jack himself. Seeing these monstrosities, Jack felt extremely weak. He felt as though he couldn’t even take one hit from these bull men. After seeing that, Jack’s mind reeled as looked at the statues that came after them.

He was surprised to see that instead of even buffer men, there were slender women with pointy ears standing there. They had long dark brown hair and were armed with just a whip but for some reason, Jack felt even more danger from them than he did from the bull men. Every statue looked so life like that it seemed as though they were just playing possum and when Jack would near, they would just jump forward.

Jack tried to look froward to see what statues come after that but he couldn’t. It wasn’t that there weren’t any statues but rather all these statues were extremely hazy and when he tried to look at them to see whether he could distinguish something, he felt his head hurt.

As he ignored the headache and tried to discern some features, an ancient voice echoed out, “Don’t try to bite off more than you can chew little boy.” Hearing this voice, Jack was startled as he immediately jumped back. He looked deeper into the Hallway, the place where the voice originated from. However, he could not see anyone there. The voice spoke out again, “Little one, come to the end of the Hall of Troops.” Hearing this, Jack looked around cautiously but seeing no exit what so ever, he decided to follow the voices orders.

As he walked towards the end of the Hall of Troops, he sneaked a peak or two from the statues but every time, the outcome was the same. He couldn’t see them and he immediately got a headache. The further along he went, the more severe the headache got. When he finally reached the end of the Hallway, he saw a throne.

On the throne a weak old man wearing a long black gown stared back at him. On the man’s face was a Mask identical to the one that was on the side of his own head. On the head of the old man was a simple black crown adorned with rubies. For some reason, Jack was mesmerized by the crown and the more he looked at it, the more he discovered that on the crown, there were pictures describing a man leading an army of Demons. On the other side of the crown, the army that was following the man were actually the slender men with long pointy ears.

Jack was pulled out from his concentration by the old man’s words, “I created the Mask countless years ago. My flesh has already ceased to exist and my Soul has already reincarnated countless times but I am still here.”

Jack focused on the old man’s words but he felt even more confused from the explanation. Seeing this, the old man let out a chuckle as he said, “What you see right now is northing more than a Memory Fragment that I left inside the Mask to guide my Heir.” Hearing the explanation, Jack asked in suspicion, “Heir?”

The old man nodded his head and said, “I am Raelag. I started out as a Demon Lord but over the course of time, I became the Leader of Shadowbrand Clan. Eons have passed and I have died, so the person who will inherit all of my techniques and troops will be you, my Heir.”
