Chapter 5: Special Talent Shard

Chapter 5: Special Talent Shard

The system's prompts made Lin Long realize that both the Mammoth and Swift required unlocking conditions. The ten ordinary zombies he previously manufactured had merely served to light up the option. To actively manufacture them, he had quite a journey ahead.

'First-order Mammoth: Collect ten pieces of Mammoth, unlock!''Note: Killing Mammoth can obtain pieces!''First-order Swift: Collect ten pieces of Swift, unlock!''Note: Killing Swift can obtain pieces!'

The unlocking instructions were straightforward, yet they left Lin Long in deep thought. Gathering one or two pieces might have been achievable, but ten? That was far from simple. Presently, he could only manufacture ordinary zombies, their combat capability quite meager.

Comparing them to the Mammoth, whose arms were larger than the zombies Lin Long possessed, attacking such a beast appeared to be an insurmountable task. This implied that Lin Long would have to pay a heavy price to take down a Mammoth.

Simply a moment ago, Lin Long had been elated about owning twelve zombies, but now it seemed like a drop in the bucket.

"It seems I need to increase the quantity of zombies."

If the quality wasn't sufficient, then he would have to make up with the quantity. Ten ordinary zombies might not be enough, but what about twenty, or thirty? Surely enough zombies would eventually overpower a Mammoth?

Moreover, he possessed the intelligence to control and command zombies. The Mammoth, albeit a first-order mutated zombie, remained mindless and unconscious. This trait was shared among all zombies. By taking advantage of this, designing traps to kill a Mammoth or Swift was much more efficient than confrontation.

Upon the system's prompt, "You need to find a Mammoth or Swift to try out!", Lin Long muttered, "I've got plenty of money to ramp up manufacturing. However, I'm short of manufacturing points."

Glancing at the remaining 27 manufacturing points, Lin Long relinquished the idea of creating more zombies for the time being. Currently, he left the zombie uncle and female white-collar zombie guarding the entrance, while the rest of the ten freshly-baked zombies under Lin Long's command, holding meat cleavers, exited the room.

Without a new residence, Lin Long could only stay here for the time being. As the saying went, 'Don't eat the grass around your own burrow.' He had no plans to annihilate zombies nearby. If he cleared out the zombies in this vicinity, should survivors arrive, they would easily spot abnormalities here. The best disguise would be to let this area retain its natural state.

Ten zombies appeared at the bottom of the residential building. They wielded shiny black and white cleavers, led by the most robust zombie, and advanced towards the city. Lin Long's consciousness entered this robust zombie, now serving as his zombie avatar. The view from the standpoint of this robust zombie was incredibly vivid.

He took a look at his cleaver in his virtual hand, swinging it with full strength a few times. The strong zombie arm gave an output of a hundred percent strength. The swinging blade carried a tearing sound, powerful, and forceful.

Impressed, Lin Long felt an upsurge of confidence.

With the remaining nine zombies, he quickly reached the edge of the city. The zombies here weren't many, but being far from the apartment building meant there was no threat to him anymore, these zombies were now manufacturing points in Lin Long's eyes.

Controlling the robust zombie, Lin Long approached a severely rotten zombie. Despite its severe decay, one shouldn't underestimate its power. Once a survivor appeared or anything triggered it, its speed and strength would exceed expectations.

The zombie was aimlessly hobbling around at this moment. As the robust zombie approached, it seemed unaware. With a wicked grin on his face, Lin Long raised the cleaver without hesitation and swung it violently towards the zombie's neck.

A superb, seamless, surprise decapitation, assisted by the sharp cleaver.

As expected, with the swing of his arm, a zombie head rolled onto the ground, followed immediately by the headless body crashing onto the ground.

"You've gained 1 manufacturing point!"

The stroke was smooth-no resistance met. Looking at the fallen zombie that he had slain, Lin Long felt strangely calm. It was his second time in the apocalypse, yet he had become somewhat used to scenes like these. In the future, there would be many more.

"Attack the zombies freely.""Target their necks and heads!"

Lin Long issued commands to the remaining nine zombies. Receiving orders from him, the previously stationary zombies animated. They tightened their grip on their cleavers, advancing towards the wandering zombies. Lin Long's focus landed on the girl zombie.

The petite girl zombie clenched the cleaver that seemed too large for her, ambled to a wandering zombie, and stood before it. Upon meeting resistance, the wandering zombie halted. The next moment, she raised her cleaver and swung it towards the zombie's neck.

"Thud!" A resounding sound echoed as the cleaver plowed halfway through the neck.

The victim zombie, initially in a daze, didn't react immediately. But the cleavage from the cleaver didn't fully sever, lodging it into the zombie's neck bone.

Fortunately, the little girl zombie didn't panic. With force she would have been unlikely to possess at her age, she managed to pull out the cleaver. At this point, the zombie under attack finally reacted.

"Roar..." With a low growl, it opened its arms to embrace the little girl zombie, opening its mouth to bite.

Despite missing an arm, the little girl zombie held firm. She stoically raised the cleaver once more, taking a swing at the zombie's head. However, she was much too close, striking at an awkward position. The zombie's teeth caught the little girl zombie's head, biting off a chunk of flesh.

"Swoosh!" A swift cleaver appeared, slicing off half of this zombie's head. The tremendous force could not be thwarted even by the skull. The robust zombie had appeared from behind the zombie.

Lin Long had interjected, unable to just watch any longer. Otherwise, the little girl zombie's head would definitely have been gnawed off.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

"Zombies will retaliate if attacked,” Lin Long noted. Whether it was an external attack or an attack from their kind, it would return the favor. This meant for a zombie to be killed decisively, you had to leave it no room for rebuttal.

Undoubtedly, the difficulty in killing zombies had just escalated.

The little girl zombie seemingly ungrateful for Lin Long's intervention, seemed indifferent to the missing chunk of flesh from her head, still clenching the large cleaver and walked towards another tall zombie.

"Damn," Lin Long frowned. This type of zombie wasn't something she could handle. The height difference was a disadvantage; her height - merely around 1.4 meters, only reached the tall zombie's chest. In such a state, she wouldn't be able to hit the critical points, rendering it impossible to kill the adversary.

Lin Long consequently gained insight into the inadequacies of ordinary zombies.

"Small, and incomplete zombies have limited combat capabilities." If unlucky enough to create this kind of zombie, it would count as an inferior product.

"Stop!" Lin Long had no choice but to order the little girl zombie to stop. Therefore, she came to a halt, standing blankly in the middle of the street.

"Gain an additional point for crafting!""Gain an additional point for crafting!""Gain..."Continuous notifications represented the zombie crowd Lin Long manufactured. They had slaughtered the city's zombies.

Looking around, Lin Long's zombie minions were running amok. Unlike the zombie girl, most of them were regular adults. When their strength was pushed to the limit, every chop was full of power. The wandering zombies in the vicinity lost five of their kind instantly.

However, Lin Long noticed a small zombie being pressed to the ground by another, scratching and gnawing madly. Out of the ten zombies he'd made, three were small.

He felt helpless.

This zombie child was resisting, but it was fruitless. One of his hands was gripping the axe, yet he didn't use it. His other hand was scratching, yet it was of limited use.

Not hesitating, Lin Long took control of the robust zombie and walked over.

Although the effects of the child zombie were small, it was still worth ten thousand dollars. He could not afford to just lose it so easily.

"Splatter!"

A swift slice to the neck put an end to the attacking zombie. By lifting the dead zombie from the child, the child ring was now free. The small boy zombie had wounds all over, some so deep his bones were visible.

However, he acted as if nothing had happened, stood up, and once again tried to execute Lin Long's instructions.

"You stand down, too."

Lin Long ordered the small boy zombie to stop.

Not being helpful, it was safer to stand still. This kind of work would be executed by adults.

After some thought, Lin Long instructed another small zombie to halt as well.

"You three will fan out to form a perimeter. Be on guard."

Eventually, Lin Long found the most suitable job for them.

With a group of organized zombies wielding cleavers, the scene was eerily spectacular. Lin Long didn't want survivors to witness it. Therefore, deploying the three smallest ones as lookouts wasn’t a bad idea.

In about ten minutes, the dozens of wandering zombies in the area had been wiped out under Lin Long's zombie squad.

"86 manufacturing points."

Lin Long glanced at the score but didn't rush to craft more zombies straight away.

The robust zombie is Lin Long's doppelganger at the moment. It bears Lin Long's will and essentially embodies Lin Long.

Leading a group of zombies, Lin Long made his way to the corner of the street. What came into view was more wandering zombies.

"I'll farm some manufacturing points here."

Lin Long didn't dare to seek the Mammoths at the moment.

He suspected that with his mere stock of zombies, even if they were all sacrificed, they might not be able to kill a single Mammoth.

To craft more zombies, he needed sufficient manufacturing points. This suburban landscape, while occasional survivors might appear, it wasn't a commonplace occurrence.

Venturing deeply, Lin Long didn't dare to risk bringing his zombies. In this area, there were already traces of mutant zombies.

Just then, around the corner came a zombie meandering lazily.

"Swoosh!"

Under Lin Long's control, swift as the wind, the axe rose and fell, claiming a manufacturing point.

"Free kill."

Like before, Lin Long directed them to target the head and neck. As a result, the remaining six zombies, brandishing their axes, ventured into the mass of zombies.

These zombies were merely extras.

The real protagonist was the robust zombie under Lin Long's control. It was the real zombie harvester.

Forthwith, Lin Long strode towards another zombie.

Here on the street, there were numerous cars. Lin Long glanced around, seeing mostly electric cars, with a scant scattering of fuel cars.

Most were hybrids.

The advanced technology of several decades ahead had made significant strides in electric propulsion, significantly outpacing modern Earth.

Lin Long's heart began to pound harder.

Did this place's electric car technology far surpass that of modern Earth? Such as improvements in battery density, charging speed, and so on.

For now, Lin Long had no means of verifying these assumptions. Needless to say, this alone was a vast treasure.

He thought about the most valuable pure electric car company in the modern world, which had a market value exceeding one trillion dollars, and what kind of technology they possessed?

The immense potential virtually made Lin Long restless.

Modern Earth was in the era of a new energy revolution. Suppose he brought the technology that was decades ahead back, could he lead such an era?

"Stay focused on the task at hand!"

Shaking off the allure, Lin Long defeated another wandering zombie.

Approaching an electric car with a sci-fi vibe, Lin Long took a closer look. The exterior alone was enough to make countless people pay for it. Paired with a long-lasting battery and fast-charging technology, an electric car had a promising future.

Lin Long looked around a bit more before moving on.

"Splatter!"

After easily killing another zombie, the wandering zombies did not notice this unusual set of invaders. They were still wandering aimlessly around.

In the middle, a zombie, stuck between two cars, was struggling ceaselessly.

The robust zombie under Lin Long’s control, wielding the axe, went for a swing.

"Crack!"

Swiftly and cleanly, he put it out of its misery.

"You've obtained a special talent shard!"

Initially, Lin Long thought it would prompt him that he had gained manufacturing points.

But to his surprise, this prompt was a bit different.

"Special talent shard?"

Lin Long was baffled.

Does such a thing exist?

Lin Long was momentarily too absorbed to continue slaying zombies. Instead, through the recesses of his mind, he inspected the System of Zombie Production.

In the storage space, there really was a shard, glowing with a green hue.

"This is a shard that can be used to craft a special talent zombie."

"Joining ten shards together can craft a designated special talent zombie."

A very straightforward explanation.

This explanation made his imagination flourish.

Lin Long read it several times.

Ten shards of special talent zombies can only craft one special talent zombie.

Here, it is a special talent zombie, not a mutant zombie. The two are distinct.

Especially, the word "designated." It seems like its type can be determined by him?

In the beginning, Lin Long didn't grasp it fully, but soon an idea flashed in his mind.

"Holy cow, this shard is awesome."

Once Lin Long realized its significance, he regarded the shard as a gem.

As long as the shards are compared with the human function in the System of Zombie Production, you would understand what the emergence of these shards represents.

The special personnel who are synthesized can be designated to become giants in a particular field.

They can be top talents in a specific field.

What can they bring?

Maybe, in the apocalypse, it's just a zombie. But if taken to modern Earth, the Zombie Production System would restore their human identity, retaining all memories and abilities.

In an instant, Lin Long would obtain a world-class top talent.

This talent could be a scientist or a business whizz.

Or even, a top racing driver, or top sniper, etc.

What they are like depends on what kind of person you hope for during the synthesis.

Lin Long's eyes glowed, his excitement palpable.

After looking at the special talent shard a few more times, Lin Long exited the system panel in his mind.

He resumed slaughtering zombies.

With such a unique drop, Lin Long felt his energy renewed, full of vigor.
