Chapter 2: Getting Rich

Chapter 2: Getting Rich

Lin Long, being an ordinary office worker in modern earth, had never had more than thirty thousand yuan in his savings.

Even those were hard-saved from his thrifty lifestyle.

In a lawful society, without any considerable opportunities, it's really hard to make a fortune.

However, the situation was different now, as in the post-apocalyptic world, everything could be yours as long as you had the potential.

For capable individuals, the post-apocalyptic world was truly a golden land.

Just imagine, numerous commodities in the city, from technological products to metals and assets, every seemingly ownerless item could induce an insane longing.

The gold shop he now had front of him, with ownerless contents only if one could bypass the numerous zombies, could make all the gold jewelry and jade etc.

belong to you.

This overnight wealth opportunity would surely make anyone's heart race.

Many survivors wanted to plunder the city, but their capabilities truly made it a suicide mission to enter the city.

However, Lin Long was different; he could manufacture zombies that obeyed his commands—a pack of listening zombies.

In his eyes, the city and devices inside were no different from his own.

The only thing Lin Long needed to do was pick up what he liked and make it his.

An excited Lin Long, controlling his zombie proxy, confidently stepped into the gold shop.

This street was probably one of the livelier streets around, with most of the zombies, but that did not impede Lin Long's gait.

He strolled past the zombies with his zombie proxy and occasionally killed one or two zombies to earn manufacturing points.

Upon arriving at the golden shop, the giant glass door had been shattered into pieces.

The original smooth mirror-like floor was now full of stains.

There were several long blood stains which, even though they were dried, were still startling.

It seems that a violent battle between humans and zombies took place here when the apocalypse came.

The zombies that previously worked as salespeople had wandered off to unknown places for three years.

There were a few ordinary civilian zombies here, probably wandered in unintentionally from outside.

Lin Long controlled his one zombie proxy with an alloy knife to walk in, but this did not attract the few zombies present inside.

They were still wandering aimlessly between the counters.

The counters in the gold shop were all damaged.

More than half of the gold jewelry was missing, and you could easily guess what happened from the chaos.

"When the apocalypse came, the gold shop should be the target of the most people.

" Under disaster, it is often accompanied by man-made disasters.

Facing the collapse of order, there will always be some survivors who are extremely greedy and take risks to loot the gold shop.

Fortunately, in their hasty retreat, they only managed to take a portion.

There were still some gold jewelry scattered on the floor, which showed how panicked they were when they left.

"Any sane person would know that food comes first in an apocalypse.

Prioritizing gold over food—can you eat gold?" Lin Long scoffed.

What originally should have been his was snatched away by these greedy and ignorant people.

They would eventually discover—with a twist of irony—that the gold they risked their lives for was worthless as they could not buy food with it.

With a swift swing of his blade, another zombie's head rolled onto the floor.

There were no limitations on the strength of zombies.

On the other hand, humans could only exert about 60% of their strength; only those who underwent intense training could exert up to 90%.

The strength was constrained by muscle tissue.

Zombies could explode into full force with each strike.

It took only two to three minutes to clear the few wandering zombies.

Then came the most exciting step for Lin Long.

Upon finding a bag in the gold shop, Lin Long, through his control, enabled his zombie's proxy to pick and pack all the scattered gold jewelry and various jade ornaments, including diamond necklaces and rings, etc.

For an unknown reason, Lin Long felt overwhelmingly exhilarated.

The jewelry that he once dreamt of but could never afford, which would cost tens and hundreds of thousands, were now picked up like rags.

These became his personal belongings, his fortune.

Controlling a zombie was proving to be extremely useful.

He didn't need to worry about the wandering zombies, and he could leisurely pick up every worthy piece of jewelry.

When he finished raiding the entire gold shop, he had collected half a bag full.

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

"It's a pity that they got here first.

Otherwise, this gold shop should have several millions' worth of assorted jewelry," Lin Long commented with a wry smile.

His loot was only a few hundred thousand—not much.

After pillaging the gold shop, he commanded the zombie to carry the bag out of the shop—to the next target.

He couldn't simply return with a small sum of money.

Typically, where there was one gold shop, there would be several others.

True enough, a few stores away another gold shop, Dragon Gold, came into view.

Lin Long's heart leapt at the sight.

Controlling his zombie proxy, he entered the Dragon Gold shop.

It was in a similar state to the previous shop—already visited by others.

But Dragon Gold was on a larger scale, with many counters being smashed, while some remained intact.

Plenty of gold and jade jewelry were still on the counters.

With a loud "bang," under Lin Long's control, the zombie proxy raised its alloy knife, smashing the glass of one of the counters.

His hand, with no mind for the glass debris, grabbed all the gold jewelry inside and placed it all into the bag.

Some glass debris lodged into its hand, but Lin Long felt no pain.

The commotion inside attracted nearby zombies.

The zombies who were attracted did get close to the zombie proxy.

However, it did not affect Lin Long, who ignored these zombies and calmly put everything valuable into the bag.

As there were no new noises to stimulate the attracted zombies, they gradually returned to their wandering state.

After about half an hour, Lin Long finally left the place, satisfied.

He took a full bag of gold, diamonds, and jade jewelry.

Their net worth was at least a million.

"Wealthy now.

" In this apocalypse, there indeed were treasures everywhere.

With zombies that he could control, he could enter and exit the city as freely as if it was deserted.

Lin Long didn't get greedy.

His primary task was to ensure his safe return.

In the city, there were wandering zombies everywhere.

Occasionally, he would see giant zombies standing out amongst the regular zombies.

These zombies, towering at four to five meters high, made regular zombies only come up to their thighs—they were clearly gargantuan zombies, the exact species and variety unknown.

But it was clear; they were extremely powerful.

On his way back, Lin Long saw a gigantic zombie flip over a bus with ease—a punch was powerful enough to obliterate a private car.

The virus modified their genes.

These appeared to be variant zombies among the regular ones.

Interestingly, Lin Long noticed a pattern—the closer he got to the city center, or the busier the area, the greater the chances of encountering variant zombies of higher levels.

With this realization, he dared not venture deeper into Tianwei city.

He could only try when he had more zombies and wasn't worried about losing them after his current loot had been exchanged for money.

Lin Long wasn't sure whether these mutated powerful zombies could differentiate zombies manufactured by the Zombie Manufacturing System.

About two hours later, as twilight approached, the zombie proxy safely returned to the residential building where Lin Long was staying.

After instructing the zombie proxy to drop the bag and guard the door, Lin Long rushed to open the bag.

The sight of the golden jewelry and the many diamond rings and jade pieces took his breath away.

"Oh yeah!" Lin Long was overjoyed—he was so happy that he almost danced with joy.

Lin Long needed to survive in this apocalypse for three days before he could return to the present day.

Today was just the initial day.

As night fell quickly, the surroundings became eerily silent.

The zombies in the darkness became even more frenzied and active.

Lin Long instructed the elder zombie and the female white-collar zombie to guard outside the room as he closed the door and window.

He decided to bide his time here before making his return to the present era.

On the first dark night, Lin Long hardly had any desire to sleep.

Firstly, this place was the apocalypse, riddled with dangers.

After experiencing the terror of the powerful zombies, Lin Long knew that the two regular zombies he'd created wouldn't stand a chance against these mutant zombies.

Secondly, he needed to meticulously map out his path moving forward.

Thirdly, he needed to study in depth the various functionalities of the Zombie Creation System.

The Zombie Creation System is straightforward.

It can be operated through mental consciousness and exists within that consciousness.

Apart from creating zombies, it also carries with it a storage space.

This storage space continues to exist even during time-space travel, and it's why Lin Long had the ability to carry present-day items into the apocalyptic Blue Star.

The storage space isn't substantially large, Lin Long discovered, and as he managed to unlock more zombie creation levels, the space would expand in tandem.

The second function the system provided was another welcome surprise to Lin Long.

The zombies created from the Zombie Creation System, pending a certain payment based on their level and after being installed with a Real Human System, could be brought back to the present day.

The Real Human System would enable zombies to transform into real humans upon returning to the present day.

"That's an incredible feature," Lin Long expressed, flabbergasted after taking a careful study of it.

Zombies returning to the present-day earth would recover their pre-zombie memories, making them indistinguishable from real human beings.

If, for instance, a zombie was a scientist pre-apocalypse, it would recover its memory and abilities once brought back to the present day, essentially resembling its pre-zombie self.

The only difference would be that their loyalty would be limited by the system.

They would always remain loyal to Lin Long, with the slightest hint of disloyalty being erased by the system.

With the system's surveillance in place, it's almost impossible for any information to leak.

Moreover, the life and death of these zombies were under Lin Long's command.

If Lin Long gave the orders, these zombies would vanish without a trace, turning into particles of light.

"So, as long as there's enough money, could I bring a few zombies back to the present day and turn them into my most loyal subordinates?" The lure of this idea was quite tantalizing.

Fast forward three days, Lin Long had managed to accumulate up to 127 creation points.

Bodies of zombies were strewn all over outside the residential building, and under the scorching sun, the smell of decay from the lifeless zombie bodies became even more overwhelming.

Lin Long began controlling his zombie proxy and started dragging the bodies away, throwing them into a ditch about one hundred meters away.

Too many corpses would attract the attention of survivors.

For the moment, Lin Long had no intentions of coming into contact with survivors of the apocalypse too quickly.

"I wonder how many years it would take before this world can be purified and made suitable for human existence again?" Lin long pondered.

In an apocalypse, every single day is a struggle for survival, every individual is living on borrowed time, and nobody knows which will come first - an accident or tomorrow.

Right at the moment when the system's countdown hit zero, Lin Long, without hesitation, gripped the bag filled with gold ornaments and returned to present-day earth.

His two proxy zombies, following his commands, lay on the ground, feigning death.

In this state, he wouldn't need to worry about them being accidentally slain by any survivors.

Back in the present-day world, Lin Long found himself in his rented place.

His first instinct was to head over to the window and draw open the curtains.

As the sunlight pierced in, the loud bustle of the city could be heard.

Where he used to see zombies, he now saw the hustle and bustle of city life - a sight so pleasant it brought tears to his eyes.

"I'm finally back!" Lin Long smiled.

The feeling was splendid.

In the upper left part of Lin Long's vision, the timer jumped into life, "Force countdown: 71:59:22.

" This indicated the countdown to when Lin Long would be forcibly transported back into the apocalypse - in three days.

Lin Long had now figured out a thing or two about the countdown.

For instance, once the countdown hits zero, he would be forcibly transported there, but if it hasn't, then he was free to choose when he wanted to go.

He could also go ahead of time if he wished to, not constrained by the timer.

This was the same for returning from the apocalypse.

He could return any time after the countdown.

When in a modern era, there would be a forced duration to head to the apocalypse - three days.

When in an apocalypse, however, there would be no time limit on when he had to leave it.

Currently, the force duration was three days, both for the modern era and the apocalypse.

Whether or not this forced duration would change was something Lin Long was unaware of.

Once he had figured this out, it wasn't challenging to understand that the Zombie Creation System required Long to spend considerable amounts of time in the apocalypse.
