“The city of Hawkesbay, a city full of life, vibrant streets filled with people, tall corporate buildings, the monorail system that runs through the city, and that beautiful big building owned by Maximus Science and Technology at the center of the city. The museum, the parks and the beautiful seaside make Hawkesbay your perfect holiday destination! Visit this summer to have the time of your life!” as soon as the television advertisement finishes running on the old television the transmission cuts off and a dialog box appears with a notice saying “You are out of subscription, Please renew it to enjoy your programs!”
In front of the television is a table that is littered with months old pizza boxes and cigarette packets and on the couch near the table a man with a rugged body wearing just his underwear and a cotton vest sleeps like a log. Near the couch there are numerous bottles of “Hawk’s Beer” placed in a random pattern, some standing tall and others lying flat; all empty of course. In the other room of the office there is a huge desk and an office chair, both look like they have seen better days, because both are covered in dust and look like relics of a forgotten time.
On the table there is a cluster of files, 30 in total all placed in cardboard folders with a big red “Case Closed” stamped on them, a small digital clock reads 12:45 P.M. and the date reads June 11, 2010. There is a huge file cabinet placed in one corner of the room, some compartments are opened and some are closed shut.
On the right wall there are a few news clippings framed and hanged, reading “Heroic Detective Shuts Down Illegal Drug Lab In Downtown Hawkesbay”, “Justice for Emily and Family as Issac Wolfe Finds the Killer Who Raped and Murdered Emily”, “City Hero Issac Wolfe solves record 10 cases this year!” and many other headlines of a time that is not now. On the left wall photos of Issac graduating the police academy, his first detective day, random friends and a huge photo of Mary and Issac’s wedding are hung like a memorial; all eating dust of course, except the photo of the wedding, it is clean and looks brand new, as if it was hanged yesterday.
The ceiling fan just above the table in the other room is old and rusty as well; it is not even oiled properly and spins at a low speed making uniform squeaks every time it completes a revolution. The office is an utter mess just like the man this office belongs to. It almost feels like a perfect life when people are told about him, graduated from the police academy at the age of 24 in 2006 young Issac was a sharp-eyed officer who got promoted to detective soon after he became a police officer.
After that promotion Issac never looked back, solving and completing every case that was assigned to him, Issac became a hero to the people of Hawkesbay. The city’s crime chart had never seen a steady decline before his arrival. Positive and energetic Issac was always keen on solving every case he got and he did so no matter how many days or months it would take.
Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
Cold trails or dead ends in the cases never stopped him from working. He had a great intuition and understanding of his surroundings. Finding clues, analyzing them in his mind and portraying the events that happened so accurately that it felt like he was there when it happened and he was watching.
One beautiful summer day, Issac on his way to his favorite diner “Grab-a-Grub” sees a lady in distress. The lady wears a long gown black in color, light makeup on her face and beautiful black hair looks inside her purse. Moving from pocket to pocket she doesn’t find what she wants and has no clue she is being observed. Issac approaches her and that’s the end of him. Looking into her eyes the man has lost it, you know I don’t really believe in love at first sight and find it cliché. But Issac falls in love with her.
He asks her what her trouble is and she tells him that she has lost her brooch. The brooch belonged to her mother who was no more and meant too much to her. Of course she knows who Issac is and asks him to go to work as an important case might be waiting for him, but the man who is lost in her eyes cannot go back to work just yet. He asks her to walk with him to the places she has been to and in an alley they find it lying on the ground. As they make their way back to the street where they met, the lady tells him that her name is Mary Maximus, the daughter of Tom Maximus.
Issac watches her as she sits in a black Mercedes and waves him good bye. Issac is under her spell, that day he couldn’t even work properly. The next day she is there again and as he comes close to her, she sees him and smiles saying, “I just...you know...wanted to say hello!” and so it begins. Numerous dates and dinners, long seaside walks and lots and lots of kissing. Finally the day arrives when they tie the knot…but it all goes away in the end. The laughter, the kisses, the promises, they all have no meaning...just like the summer breeze…she was gone, December 12, 2008 and she had taken Issac with her too.
How she died remains a mystery, a mystery only Issac has the answer to, but he tells nobody. So here he is now a shadow of his former self. Not the heroic detective he once was, his reputation died as well and now he just drinks beer, smokes his cigarettes and lives on his savings. No new cases are given to him and it’s not like he gives a shit about it. After Mary’s death he is no one.
His detective badge will be taken from him soon, but I still wonder if taking the badge will take his skills and intuition too, will it undo all that he did for Hawkesbay? Just as the digital clock reads 01:00, there is a faint knock on his office door. Issac who was heavily drunk before he fell asleep doesn’t seem to notice it, the intensity of the knock gradually increases and soon turns into drums in Issac’s head and he wakes up.
He opens his eyes frowning and screams, “I swear I didn’t order a Pizza! Get lost!” the knock stops for a moment but continues, giving him a headache. Issac gets up from the couch not knowing the state he is in and who is behind the god damn door. He opens the door and just when he opens his mouth to say something he freezes. A young girl dressed in sharp clothes with a folder in her hand looks at him and suddenly looks to the left, as if ignoring Issac.
Her face show signs of embarrassment. Issac scratches his belly and realizes something, “Where are my pants?” his half opened eyes widen and he whispers, “Shit! My bad” and closes the door as he dresses up. He opens the door again finally wearing something and the girl says, “You are Mister Issac…I presume?” To which Issac nods as he welcomes her inside his crummy office.
