The Truth (pt 1 of 2)

“Why do you keep on digging?” The boy asked the girl.

However, the girl did not respond. She just kept on digging… and digging…

The sound of the shovel made the guy’s ears hurt. ‘Why is she doing this? She’ll only tire herself. And besides…’ The boy thought.

The girl stare at the guy as if she just heard what he said a few heartbeats ago. She fixed her hair and then stared at his deep dark eyes. “I deserve to know the truth.”

Those words saddened him. He knew that if the girl found out, she would forget why she even loved him in the first place. It is something that she must not know. Besides, if she did knew, ‘It wouldn’t do her any good.’ He thought.

“You wouldn’t like what you’re about to see…” He told the girl as he is trying to hide his true feelings behind his normal voice. He wanted to cry to make her stop. But tears won’t come out of his eyes. He wanted to scream. But that would wake the whole neighbourhood. “Everything about us would change…”

“I want to do this.” She said as the made another glimpse at the half-moon above their heads.

It was only the two of them in that dark place. Only the flashlight, moon and the stars were lighting the two of them.

“Aren’t you happy? With what we already have?” He asked.

Memories of last month came back to him. When he felt so alive that his long awaited love came back to him. All these years, he thought he’d never see her again. Until she came back on the hospital for him.

The way she smiled on their first date, what they ate, what they talked about, where they went… everything.

She pretended not to hear a thing. She continued her digging.

“You told me you love me… and I do…” He wanted to cry. “I do love you…”

He wanted to tell her, “Aren’t those words enough? Aren’t my actions enough proof?” He did not know what to feel. Whether he wanted to be angry or he wanted to plead her to stop. And he knows that he is running out of time.

                “Please…. Stop…”

                “I deserve to know.”

As she continued to dig, her shovel hit something hard. She knelt on the ground and shoved the dirt with her hands.

After a few seconds, it revealed a coffin. She didn’t gave it a second thought when she decided to open it. She didn’t gave the guy enough time to convince her to stop.

When she opened it, she found the guy’s body. In his funeral attire. Same face, same body.

                “You… You’re already…” The girl said.

When she looked up, the guy was still there.

                “Aren’t you…”

“That’s my twin. My little brother.” And even when he hated to say it. He knew that he had to. “Your boyfriend.”
