Mother Would Be Angry

Pick one," My step-mother said, "and be quick about it."

"I want the pink one," I said as I looked up to her. She was tall. Dad said that she was taller than my real mom, and way prettier. "I want the pink one," I said again as I tugged her office suit.

She sighed. It could be seen in her face that she was irritated as she rolled her deep brown eyes. Like every time she saw me.

My step-mother hated me. Every part of me. But she never said it. She just stared at me like she wanted to eat me alive.

"There isn't a pink one, my dear." She then took a yellow umbrella from the rack. It had cat ears on it when I opened it.

"Make do with this," she said wlithout smiling.

"Thank you, Jane," I said as I hugged her with my new umbrella inl hand.

"Really? Your step-mom gave you a gift?" Stephen asked. "What is it, Helen?"

"This!" I took my new cat umbrella from my bag and opened it. "Ta-da~"

Stephen looked at me with disappointment. "That's it?"

"Uh-huh." I hugged my umbrella.

"That's no gift. He said as he smirked. "She bought that because it was raining outside. I mean, there's a typhoon! It seems like there's no end to it!"

"Take it back! My mom bought it to me 'cuz she loves me!" I said, tears nearly dropping in my eyes.

"No! Your step-mother doesn't love you! She's not even your real mother!"

That was when I couldn't hold it any longer. My tears fell from my eyes as I cried out loud. It was so loud that our teacher heard us.

"Of course, I love you, my sweet little thing. Don't cry." It was the first time I saw Jane smile at me. "Don't listen to that Stephen, okay?" She patted my head lightly. "Jane loves you, okay? And we may not be blood related, but our hearts are connected."

After realizing what she just said, Jane blushed. "What am I saying to an eight year-old child? Anyways, should I get you a pink one, instead? A brand new one? It seems to be a bit broken after you hit him with that umbrella." She laughed.

"No!" I said as hugged it. "This is what Jane gave to me," I said as I was about to cry again. "Jane's gift is this yellow cat. I don't want anything else. Jane gave me this," I told her.

"Okay." Jane smiled. "I won't take it from you."

And after that, I always took my umbrella with me. May it be raining or not. Jane also started to smile at me after that incident. Jane loved me. I felt so happy.

One day, it was raining really hard. The black clouds started gathering, painting the sky in black. The thundered roared together with the loud beating of my heart.

The trees were dancing in the tune of the hard wind that passed them. It was cold. Really cold.

"I want to go home," I told myself as I stared at the never ending rain from the window of my classroom. "Jane's taking awhile. She said that she'd take me home."

As impatient as I was, I walked outside the room to go home by my own. "I have my umbrella, so no worries." I said to no one as smiled and hummed a random tune.

I opened my umbrella when I was finally outside the gate of the school. "Bye bye, Mr.Policeman," I said as I waved at Mr.Policeman

"I'm just a Security Guard!" he said. Mr. Police always made the funniest jokes. Like him not being a Policeman. I laughed at him. "Come back here! You can't go outside on your own!" He said as he grabbed me by my arm.

"Jane said we'll meet at the donut shop near the mall," I lied. "I don't want her to wait."

"Be careful then." Mr.Policeman said with his worried face. Like the time she saw me petting a dog. He's always kind.

I walked on my way home. "I can't wait to go home today. I'll play lots and lots with Jane and Doggy tomorrow! They said that there won't be classes tomorrow because of the typhoon! Yaaay!"

After I rejoiced, my cat umbrella was taken by the hard and sharp wind. "Heeeeeyyyy! Waiiitt! Give it back!" I ran to chase the umbrella that flew away. "Jane gave it to me! Give it back!" But the wind never answered. It just fell quiet. The wind probably understood what I said and placed the umbrella on the ground.

I ran toward it to get the umbrella. And before I knew it, there was a huge truck running towards me. Loud sounds were heard. But I just stood there, frozen.

Black. The rain was black. I thought. Oh, it was red. The rain was red. Or was it me that was red? The umbrella? Where was it? I tried to move my body but I couldn't. It hurts so much. Every part of me. But I could move my head.

"Jane?" I said as I saw her. She was lying next to me. Did she dye her hair red? "You look good in that look, Jane," I told her.

She was still sleeping though. Why was she sleeping here? In the middle of the road?

My body hurt. Every part of me. And I couldn't move. I was feeling dizzy. My eyes, they were closing on their own.

"Hurry! We have a kid here! She can still make it!" A guy said who was wearing a funny costume.

"How about the other one?" Another guy who was wearing the same strange costume said.

He held Jane's wrist. "No pulse. We lost her.

Lost? But Jane's just here...? I thought.

"Sir, have you seen my umbrella?" I asked him. "The yellow cat umbrella? Jane gave it to me?" I looked on my right. "Oh." It was already crushed. "Mother would be angry...." And then I smiled. "No. Jane won't. Jane loves me lots. And we'll play lots and lots when we get home."
