Ch 4 - Undead Ammunition

Ch 4 - Undead Ammunition

Leon shot into the air, making sure his force-field was also deployed.  At level one it was weak, but luckily so were the zombies.

Stopping mid-air to look down, almost cost him his life.  When he turns to see what triggered his danger sense, a zombie smashed against the transparent barrier of his shield.  Leon was too surprised to react, but at this height, the zombie was doomed.

Scrambling for purchase against the smooth shield resulted in nothing, and so it plunged to the earth, its opened mouth moaning its sorrow at the loss of its meal.

While watching the first zombie free fall to the ground, a second hit his force-field.  This time the shield gave out and zombies arm reach for Leon even as the lost momentum started to drag it back to the earth.

Rather than float around for the third undead missile, Leon activates both teleport and invisibility.  Just as he did so, a third zombie occupied the space he had just vacated.

Invisibility was far from perfect at level one, so he stayed still as he tried to find the source of the attack.  It wasn't hard, not far from the highway underpass, a group of undead that looked 10foot version of undead Barbarians, were searching the sky for their target.  In their hands were their weaker cousins, ready to be thrown at any moment.

Leon shook his head slightly, there was no way it was physically possible for them to be throwing fully grown zombies almost a tenth of a mile into the air.

But I'm, flying and invisible at the moment, so who am I to complain.

Moving painfully slow and redeploying his shield, Leon allowed himself to drop withing scanning range of the new threat.

Second tier monster!

There were only three dolls and their levels weren't that high, but they were way stronger than any of the other zombies Leon had seen before.  Two of them were resistant to ice and the other to fire.  They scanned the sky for any sign of their enemy with the patience of the dead.

Leon thought about the best way to attack.  Any summons would be swarmed and his only decent attack was an AOE that took some time to cast.  Sighing quietly, he flew back into the air once more browse the store.

Diving back into the store was as overwhelming as always, but he quickly focused on what he wanted.  With a little over 33,000 credits left that six, second-tier attacks with his discount.

He didn't spend too much time thinking about it, just choosing a basic attack of four elements of the second tier.  Those would be able to handle most situations, and he was far better equipped to handle this new world than most already.  If he needed more from the store then he would just have to hunt the zombies and earn the credits.

A little over 20 thousand credits later, Leon was ready to wrestle with the dead.  Just so long has he didn't actually have to touch them.  Spending a bit more to make sure he wouldn't be in any danger of running out of mana was also a must.

Checking his own status revealed a few open summon slots, meaning some of his minions must have been killed after gathering the loot at the last portal.  Still, he needed a distraction before he got in over his head.

Flying just far enough to be able to dodge any incoming low flying zombies Leon began his counter attack.

Summoning 6 being of the metal element resulted in a cyclops, two gray slimes, a metal clad goblin, a spear, and a helmet.

Giving the spear to the cyclops resulted in the giant one-eyed being suddenly becoming more focused.  At ten feet high, he would have been a match for the dead-eyed dolls, but with the spear maybe he was even stronger!  at least until one remembered the tier difference.

Leon kept the Helmet for himself since so had no head protection.

Just has the helmet was placed on his head, a zombie once again impacted his shield.  It was quickly dismembered by his summons, but, another zombie had already landed on the goblin by then.  The little green knight pulled out a dagger and proceeded to plunge it into the dead man's eye.  The rest of the summons were already making their way towards the Dead-eyed dolls.

The slimes were slow but suddenly lunges when the zombies got too close, easily removing heads.  The Cyclops displayed no skill with the spear but his brute strength made easy work of the undead that got too close.  The goblin had caught up and deftly removed any threats that the others missed, either with his dagger or the sword he carried as well.

Except for the occasional firebolt, Leon didn't waste much mana on the zombie puppets.  When the summons got close enough the dolls stopped trying to throw the other undead and charged into them.

The slimes were easily defeated despite their high resistance to physical damage, they were just overwhelmed.

The goblin managed to stay out of reach of the giant undead that comes after it, but couldn't manage to damage it very much.  He barely reaches their thighs and his dagger and sword removed flesh that the undead didn't even need.  The armor was the only thing that kept him alive when an unlucky foot caught him in the gut.  his short flight only cut short when he crashed into the zombies attracted to the fight.

The cyclops fared a little better, but even with the spear, he was almost as mindless as the undead.  facing two of them proved too much, however and it eventually fell under their assault.  Blue blood sprayed from its neck and other wounds as the undead swarmed it.

It wasn't all a total loss though, with the time bought by the summons Leon managed to cast his charge ice storm close enough to the portal.

After the blue and gold energy shoots into the sky, he dismisses all but the goblin, who has somehow regained its feet.  Heavily injured, it's fighting its way away from the portal, following its master's lead.

The dead-eyed dolls focus their attacks on Leon, throwing more zombies at him as he flies away zigzagging and low to the ground.  Before the goblin can be surrounded again, he manages to catch up to it and taking it under his arms, they raise into the air, to land atop a nearby building.

Leon wants to make sure the portal is destroyed, the Dolls are too dangerous to leave alone as well.  As the ice and lightning decimate the zombies close to the portal, the dolls still manage to throw the occasional zombie towards Leon's vantage point.  Any that actually make it to the roof are handled by the Goblin.

Healing the summon was a large waste of mana but Leon hopes for a large return in the future.  The skill leveled rapidly with all the damage the goblin had taken.  Leon watched the little warrior fight with obvious skill and few wasted movements.  There was much to be learned from these creatures when he had the time.

Seven minutes later, the sky cleared and revealed a large group of dead undead.

"Wait here!"  He yelled as he dove off the building.  activating flight at the last moment was a thrill but his mind was on the Dead-eyed doll that survived the charged Ice storm.  It only had one arm left, which was good but was already searching for more ammunition, which was bad.

landing close to the monster, Leon immediately hit it was [fire bolt] and [earth spike].  If it survived the storm, it was resistant to ice, lightning or both and he wasn't taking any chances.

The earth spike impaled the brute from the bottom lifting it up into the air, black sludge spilled from the being, a wave of a revolting stench coming with it.  The monster roared at Leon but would need a moment to free itself.

It didn't get a moment.

The first fire-bolt set the zombie on fire.  That didn't stop him from shooting it with a few more, though.

Looking around at the ground, Leon wanted to collect all the cleared credit cards, but destroying the remaining portals was more important.

Sighing he went to pick up the goblin.  After that, he would gather the drops from the summons at the last battle site and lead them towards the next portal.  It would be easier with more bodies to throw at the gates.

He was pretty sure, they could look forwards to more dead-eyed dolls or perhaps stronger zombies at or near the gates.  After all those brutes were hidden near this portal when they could have been off causing havoc.  They were most likely some sort of minimal defense for the portals.
