Chapter 9: All the best, host

Sorcerer’s sight? Asked Bowen

"Yes, kid, you may not know this because you have never been outside this rural village. This world is large, and there are many powerful people and professions other than fighters and magicians (rankers) whom you have always heard of. Among them, sorcery is one important profession that is highly sought after. Only 10 percent of the awakened are destined to become sorcerers. Do you know why?" Asked Herald

“Why is it so, sir?”

Simple. Sorcerers have to remember many magic spells and drawings, and their incantations are also long. But a normal mana magician doesn’t have to do this, you know. They can just expel the mana from their mana vessel through their wand to activate an element like water or fire to attack. And not everyone has the talent and patience to memorize and practice strange spells and drawings.

Then isn’t it better to become a magician?

Herald shook his head in disapproval. "A beginner sorcerer can kill 50 beginner magicians of the same level.

Let me give you an example, kiddo," said Herald. Consider how a fire magician kills an opponent. You should have seen Gerald the ranker magician, who helped you fight wild boar. A fire magician uses fireballs, a fire lance, and other magic skills to kill their opponent. The higher the skill, the higher the mana usage. Once the mana vessel becomes empty, the magician will become just a practice target for his opponent. What can a single fire magician do if they face multiple opponents?

But in the case of a fire sorcerer of the same level, the use of mana is external. They only have to infuse mana in their incantation and drawing. Once it is done, the opponent will become a practice target for the sorcerer instead. Unless the spell or drawing is decoded by another sorcerer, it will keep on absorbing infinite mana from the atmosphere attacking your opponent indefinitely. Think about a magic circle trapping and releasing skills like fireballs and fire lances indefinitely.

“Ah!“ Bowen came to a realization.

Not only that. An expert in sorcery can not only attack their enemy but also defend, support, and heal their own fighters with multiple magic drawings overlapped on one another. They are basically a one-man army.”

“So, you have to obtain sorcerer's sight to become a sorcerer?” Bowen was curious.

Haha..hahaahahahaaa... To Bowen’s question, Herald simply started laughing.

"Kid, you are really underestimating this blessing of yours. One is eligible to become a sorcerer if they have a decent ability to learn by heart the spells and drawings. But only 1% of sorcerers are blessed with sorcerer’s sight.

“Only 1 percent? So rare?”

"Yes. A sorcerer’s sight can help you learn the art faster than others. Everyone who has had this blessing in the past has become a grand master sorcerer who could decide the rise and fall of empires. Moreover, there is a group of sorcerers called enchanters who engrave their spells and drawings onto weapons and artifacts. They can turn a piece of junk metal into a magical weapon. And to become an enchanter, you must have sorcerer’s sight. The countries will not hesitate to wage wars to obtain a powerful ally on their side. Similarly, there are people who use them to create chaos in society. If someone in power knows about you, they may even try to kill you. After all, they don’t want to allow a child who may grow up to be a potential danger for their country in the future." finished Herald.

Bowen understood how naive he had been so far. His photographic memory is both a boon and a bane for him. He decided not to use it carelessly until he acquired enough power to protect himself.

"Now Bowen, tell me truthfully, do you possess the sorcerer’s sight?” Herald was in complete eagerness to get a positive answer.

[If the old man really wanted to harm me, he doesn’t have to explain all this stuff to me] thought Bowen.

“Hmm..sir I really don’t know if it is a sorcerer’s sight, but maybe something similar. It's just that I am able to memorize faster.”

"No, it is definitely a sorcerer's sight. I knew it, kid. Knew it." Herald’s face was full of happiness. He immediately went to his shelf, took out a piece of paper, and started writing something like a letter. Soon he folded it, put it in an envelope, and sealed it with a red liquid. He let out his blood on the envelope, and soon a strange golden symbol consisting of a lion with wings and something like a sun behind it started to appear.

"Take this," he said as he handed the envelope to Bowen.

“This?”

“If you decide to become a sorcerer, take this to my friend. His name is Atlantis. You can find him at Arcane Aurora, a school for sorcerers present in Monhart. Remember, you can join the school only when you are 10 years old. Until then, don’t mention this to anyone. Not even to your friends or parents.” Warned Herald in a serious tone

“Thank you, teacher. I will remember your words.” Bowen received the letter respectfully.

"If you want to really thank me, fulfill the request Atlantis gives to you. That is if you are capable." said the herald with a solemn expression.

…Beep beep….

[Well, the rewards are really generous for a side mission. Which means the mission is tough.] Bowen knew very well how generous this black-hearted company can be in giving him a lot of trouble. It’s just been two days since he got his memories. He had been put in danger twice. One with the wild boar incident, another is with Herald finding out about his photographic memory. If it had been anyone else in the place of Herald, he might have lost his life by now.

Bowen met Jago and Renault outside Herald's house.

"Bowen, did you pass the test?" Jago ran immediately after seeing Bowen to know the results.

“Yes, I passed the test.” said Bowen casually.

Really? Jago was so happy for Bowen.

"What is there to be so happy about?" Mocked Renault. "It's just a small test. Don't think you are more talented than me."

Don't listen to him, Bowen. He is jealous of you.

"It's okay," said Bowen. "But why is Renault here? Shouldn't you have gone to your house?

Why you ask? Because I am going to accompany you guys to the mountains. Renault said out of the blue.

What? Jago and Bowen exclaimed together.

Why? I can't? I already got permission from Martha and that ranker.

"Don't call my mother disrespectfully. She is of your mother's age," said Jago.

Why should I show respect when I am a noble? Renault and Jago started an argument.

"Jago, let's not waste time. Mr. Gerald and your mother must be waiting." said Bowen, not wanting to delay the trip any longer. Reluctantly Jago gave up on picking a fight with Renault.

The children met Martha and Gerald on their way. Gerald introduced his daughter Melee to the children, who was just 2 years older than them. Renault tried his best to befriend Melee as he could leave a good impression on the ranker. Melee kept her ice-cold face as usual. Jago kept on talking about his past journeys with his mother, showing himself as an expert in herb picking. Bowen didn't mind the children. He focused on the conversation between Gerald and Martha.

"Mr. Gerald, this is called Gray herb. Very useful in making anti venoms for Fray's poison (a type of rodent grime sphere). And this is the Perila flower. It can be used for cooking. Has a sharp taste." Martha kept introducing herb after herb, and Gerald kept asking his doubts. Bowen kept picking up useful herbs on his way and memorizing their uses.

"Why are you picking them Bowen?" asked Jago.

"I want to keep them as a memory of this trip." Bowen managed to deceive Jago somehow.

Others didn't pay attention to Bowen's activities, so he secured as much herb as possible. Jago saw Bowen put the herbs in his bag, but secretly and slowly, they were transferred to the space bracelet.

The Elu mountains were not so high. It looked more like a big hill than a mountain. One can reach the top of the mountain within 5 to 6 hours of walking at a normal pace. There were no wild animals along their journey. And soon the group was halfway through the mountain.

"Here is where the herbs are Mr. Gerald," said Martha, pointing towards a pathway shrouded with dense vines and trees. We have to be careful from here on as there might be poisonous insects dwelling on the sap of these trees. I think it is better to leave the children here.

"No, dad, I'm not staying here," said Melee.

“Honey, don't be like this. I will return with Miss Martha soon.” Said Gerald

Martha also convinced Jago and others to stay at the entrance of the pathway which was rather safe. She warned them not to roam anywhere, as the mountain might have hidden dangers. There is also the risk of getting lost. After a string of advice, the adults left for their business.

"Melee, look here," Renault said, forming a small ball of mana on the tip of his finger. It was a shock for other children, especially for Bowen. Because the Mana ball had a definite, solid shape, unlike Bowen’s clumsy one that he made yesterday.

[How did this boy conjure a complete Mana ball at such a young age? So he is not all words, huh? It seems like there are many gifted people in this world. I should hasten my pace] thought Bowen.

“You can create a mana ball?”Melee exclaimed with surprise. She was older than him by 2 years, and she has not yet awakened.

“You guys are surprised, right? I have already awakened since last year. For a noble child like me, things like these are as easy as a walk in the park.” Said Renault with a smug expression.
