7 Conflagrate

It took some time but eventually, someone came with a bottle of healing potion. They poured it onto the blistered and burnt skin on my hand. The liquid gave off a faint green glow as the damage started to heal. The potion looked like it was just accelerating the existing healing process. It also looks like it is preventing the formation of scar tissue because when it was done my hand looked like nothing had ever happened.

Now the damage seems to be repaired. I stop deadening the nerves in my hand, amazingly there is not the faintest feeling of pain. I touch my hand to make sure that this lack of pain was not just nerve damage, and I can feel it.

The teacher talks a good look at my hand and with a satisfied nod, he says “I'm glad to see that worked, do you feel any pain?” I shake my head, “Ok we should probably get you to the infirmary to have you looked over and make sure you are ok”

With that, he gently grabs my left hand and begins to walk me out of the testing area. We had to push through the crowd that had gathered around me, as we walked I could feel the eyes of the students on me. Some gazes held concern and others held contempt. Just as we got to the door, I could hear some noises like someone else was pushing through the crowd. A moment later I see Jacob pop out and rush over to us.

“Lyla! Are you ok, I heard you scream but in all the commotion I was not able to get to you”

I nod. Then the teacher then starts talking “What are you doing Jacob? Do you know her?”

“Yes, she is my younger sister. today is her first day here at the school. To think something like this would happen to her”

“Well Jacob, if you would like since you have already done your test you can join us as we go to the infirmary”

“Thank you, Mr. Allard. Lyla, would that be ok with you?”

“Yes. Having big brother Jacob along will help me not be scared”

Jacob smiled at my remark and reached out his hand, Mr, Allard let go of my hand and Jacob picked it right back up. We started walking down the halls towards the infirmary, it was quite the distance away. No wonder the teacher who got the potion was so out of breath. We finally reached the door, it had a plack above it with "infirmary" written on it.

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

We entered the room and were greeted by an older woman who looked like a stereotypical grandmother. She had short poofy hair that was starting to go grey. She was sitting at her desk reading something with her glasses on the tip of her nose. When she noticed the door open she looked out over her glasses at us.

"Oh, Mr. Allard what brings you here today? Does it have something to do with the other faculty member rushing in here demanding a healing potion?" she said in a very sweet tone as she lifted herself from the desk.

"Hello Dr. Norwood, yes that is exactly why I am here. Lyla here was just taking the aptitude test when it started to burn her hand, luckily we got that potion just in time."

At the moment I was standing behind Mr, Allard Still holding onto Jacob's hand.

"Well sweetie, let me get a look at ya," she said as she beckons me over.

"Don't worry I won't bite."

I move in front of her and she kneels down to my level.

"Now let me see your hand.

...mumm, that's interesting…"

"Well dear, I am sorry to say it but you probably have an allergy to magic…" she said with a saddened tone.

"What do you mean she has an allergy to magic!?" Jacob blurted out.

"Well son, it means that if she ever tries to invoke magic she can risk severely injuring herself. This time she got lucky… there may not be the next time if she tries to use anything stronger than a testing device."

"Oh no… how could this happen?"

"Well it is extremely rare for someone to have this, but it can happen. shame too, I can tell she could have been great at it.”

'What does she mean I could have been good magic, I barely have any mana…'

"Well I better let the superintendent know, that way we can take special precautions to avoid something like this happening again," she said as she walked back to her desk and opened a drawer pulling something out. she walked back over to me.

"I know this was a scary experience for you. Hopefully, this will make you feel a little better."

She extended her hand and in her palm was a piece of candy. I timidly grab the candy and begin to unwrap it. with this I see her give a warm smile. I put the candy in my mouth 'wow, this tastes like butterscotch'.

Seeing the look on my face, she said "See, already better! I bet that once you are done with that candy you will feel right as rain."

"Th-nk ou!'' I say slurring my words because of the candy.

“Well Dr. Norwood, thank you for everything. I will now take these two back to the others.”

“Your welcome. Well, I best be off to talk to Mr, Proctor.”

After the exchange of words between the adults we went back to the auditorium to be assigned to a class. Once we arrived I ended up being put in the second class. The reasoning behind the class assignments was left a mystery, they probably figured it wouldn't be worth the effort to explain why. Now that it was decided we were separated by class and moved to the classrooms where we will be spending the next year.
