13 Ameliorate

The cold night air is rushing past my face. The street lights emit a dim glow creating a sprawling web of light. The moon above cast a pale hue on buildings, while the stars sparkled in the dark sky. I'm lost in the beauty of it all only to come crashing back down to reality… literally. I just barely manage to decelerate and land on a rooftop after just jumping ninety meters in the air.

For the past month, I have been exerting my power on myself in the hope to build up a resistance to the forces I can experience. Unfortunately, while I finally have built a decent tolerance I still feel like I’ve been hit by a car whenever I'm done with my training sessions. I did start out small by only doing small accelerations when I had free time, but I quickly grew tired of training in my room and eventually took to exploring the city of Celestia.

The city was so much bigger once you see it from outside of the confines of a carriage. So many interesting things to see and do, sadly I am only able to see it at night. I bet it would be amazing during the day. I need to convince my dad to take us out to the city someday.

Well, enough of that. I should probably start heading home now. I stand up from my perch and brush off the shorts I borrowed from my brother Jacob. Like hell I was going to do something like this In my clothes, my parents apparently think I should only wear dresses, luckily my brother was willing to lend me some of his old clothes to use during our sparring sessions with dad. Luckily they also come in handy for my extracurricular activities...

Luckily home was only about eight kilometers from me so I could get back in six minutes, not too bad… I point myself in the direction I needed to go and I jump all while applying force at a forty-degree angle propelling me into the air. I had forgotten how much I missed this feeling. the freedom of not being tied down, the feeling of soaring through the air.

Soon the Fullsky mansion enters my vision and is fast approaching, my perception of this place has changed so much in the past few weeks. After that incident at dinner, it seemed like my own mother had outright ceased acknowledging my existence. I eventually determined what the cause of the complete shift was apparently my family on my mother's side is a lineage of extremely powerful fire mages. It was easy to deduce from there that this laid the foundations for them to become quite narcissistic.

That side of the family looks down on those weaker than them, this includes their own flesh and blood. I hadn't realized it up to this point but it seems like there were already hints of this In the interactions between our mother and Jacob, she would always prefer to be around Eloise, I had always assumed that it was just the fact the Eloise is a girl and thus had similar interests. Thinking back on it now, I no longer think that is the case. Then here I come, lacking the complete inability to use magic to the point where it hurts me. We already live in a society that looks down on commoners due to their lack of magic ability. And now I, a girl of noble birth, from one of the most powerful bloodlines, can't even come in contact with magic.

I used to think highly of Petra, but now I realize that for her a mother's love is conditional. Thankfully I still have my father's love, His family wasn't born into power. After generations of hard work and determination, they managed to gain nobility status, because of this, they don't have any discrimination for those that are weaker. I can already tell that all of this will slowly create a divide in our family, and that is something that I feel responsible for.

“Dammit!”, I did it again…

I really need to focus on what I am doing or else I may get myself killed. I need to remember that using my ability like this is like riding a motorcycle, one lapse in judgment can be lethal... That is actually something I miss from my previous life, riding a motorcycle is something I enjoyed a lot. Though I didn't do it often for obvious reasons.

Luckily after that mishap, I’m now right outside the wall that surrounds our home. I walk up to the wall and propel myself up and overdoing a spinning front flip at the apex and then landing gently on the other side. Vector enhanced parkour was something I developed in my past life, I always loved the feeling of doing such flashy stunts.

I sneak my way to where my room is located, jump up to the second story, and at the last moment, I alter my gravity and am now standing on the wall. I tap my foot on the window causing it to open, I then hop “down” normalizing my gravity once I'm fully inside. Moving back over to the window I tap the wall causing the window to close, I then put the bolt that is used to keep me from opening the window back into its hole, and giving it a flick on one side, caused it to thread into place.

Walking over to my dresser, I took off my “street” clothes and put them back on the nightgown Victoria had put me in earlier. I move over to my bed and lie down, the second I feel myself relax I'm hit with a wave of pain as my muscles tense up. Thankfully it seems like my training is working because the pain is not as bad as it has been. Eventually, the pain dies down and I fall fast asleep.

“Hey, Lyla! Are you as excited for lunch as I am? I think they are going to have pudding!”

“Do all you think about is food?”

“No! I sometimes think about cake!”

With a loud thud, my face slammed into the table… ‘Why did I befriend someone whose IQ is the same as her age’

“Oh no! Are you alright?”

“I'm fine… Just questioning my life choices…”

“Oh! Like what you are going to have for lunch?”

‘I think I might have died a little inside’. On the subject of life choices… Somehow Proctor actually turned himself in, though not intentionally. He went to the City Guard and tried to convince them that a little girl had attacked him, that went about as well as you would think it would. It got even worse for him when they asked him what he was doing at the time and he let slip what he was going to try and do… Let's just say he is now rotting in a cell, and from what I have heard of prisons, his new buddies probably won't be too gentle with him.

Proctor was then succeeded as superintendent by Mrs.Lucia, who was the vice superintendent previously. Luckily, the City Guard had interrogated her and found that she had no clue what Proctor had done, he had picked times when he knew she was not at the school. Apparently, she has now started an investigation into who may have been targeted by him so she can help them through the trauma. Luckily, she has found a few students who were targeted and she is now helping that girl and boy out, though I know how hard it is to get over something like that.

In the end, I wonder if I made the right choice in not killing him. If I had, they would have just investigated the murder and would have probably never found out what had actually happened. Though at this point, I feel really happy that my ability actually did some good for someone other than me.
