Sorting and other existential crises

Sorting and other existential crises

The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.

Mark Twain

I had said goodbye to Amos and Abby who I just couldn't think of as my parents. Now I was sitting in an empty compartment on the train as it was leaving the station. I was reading The Standard Book of Spells. Trying in vain to use it as a distraction from the thoughts raging against me.

The more I grew to accept that this was my new reality the more the loss started sinking in. I had so far put up a strong front acting as best I could. I didn't want Amos and Abby to suspect some new consciousness had invaded there son but I could feel my emotions begin to fray.

I would probably never see my friends and family again. I was only close to my mom who I ate sunday lunch with every week and a few friends but the loss was hard to think about. I was luckily distracted by a whole new branch of learning and it was magic for crying out loud but I knew I had to come to grips with this.

I was fighting back tears when the train door opened up and a boy with a gaunt face and sleek black hair looked in and saw my puffy eyes.

"Oh look at the little baby. Do you miss your mother teets already, little baby?" He said laughing as he walked away.

I didn't know what was worse the insult or the fact that it was so close to the mark yet not at the same time.

The girl behind him frowned and shook her head. She had platinum blonde almost white hair with large blue eyes. Her skin was white as milk and her lips had cherry lipstick…. I shook my head.

"Sorry about Dedrick. He's a bit cruel at times but he's not as bad as he seems." She said as she smiled at me "It's going to be ok. Hogwarts is great and you will love it there. Just let me know if you need anything I'm Renee and I'm a Ravenclaw perfect so I'm here to help"

Honestly if I was a homesick 11 year old just that smile would have cheered me up. She was a beautiful girl and you could tell that was both inside and out. But as a 30 year old trapped in an 11 year olds body it just confused the hell out of me.

I mean she was probably 15 or 16 at most which means she was years older then this body. My mind though was twice her age and it felt dirty seeing her as attractive. Like I was some kind of dirty old man.

Dating was going to suck for years.

"Thank you." was all I could choke out, damn hormones.

She smiled, closed the door and went after Dedrick. Now with even more confusing thoughts I returned to the book.

Wait a minute there was no Renee or a Dedrick in the books or movies.

I guess it makes sense. Not every one in a school of hundreds would get screen time. I shrugged it off. I flipped the page eager to get this book done as quickly as possible. Of course that wouldn't do.

"Oh hiya mind if we sit in here. Everywhere else is full."

I looked up as the door opened and saw two redheaded twins grinning.

"Sure." I said shrugging. "I'm J….Cedric, Cedric Diggory." I said almost using my original name.

They helped each other get their trunks up then sat down panting slightly.

"I'm Fred thats George" He said pointing to himself then the other

"Weasley of course. Reckon you figured that out on account of the hair." George said pointing at his hair.

"I figured that might be the case. Good to meet you"

It was honestly. I had been formulating a few rudimentary plans for this first year and their services would be necessary to pull off a few.

"Are you both first years as well?"

"Yep. Speaking of, do you know how they sort us? Bill and Charlie wouldn't tell us."

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

"Oh that." I said waving my hand "You just have to wrestle a troll. No big deal."

They now looked very worried. I figured it was both a good prank and kind of justice for Ron as that was what they had told him you had to do.

"What house do you reckon you'll be in?" George said.

"Ravenclaw!" I almost shouted.

"Woah. Guess you're pretty confident." Fred said smirking.

"I like books." I said with confidence.

Honestly Slytherin could be a possibility but if Neville could go to Gryffindor and Malfoy to Slytherin then a person's desire must be what decides a house. Neville wanted to be brave but definitely wasn't and Malfoy just wanted to be like his father. Malfoy was as bullhead as a gryffindor and just as cunning.

I just wanted to read all the books. All your knowledge are belong to us.

"We will both be in Gryffindor of course, every Weasley has been." Fred said

Geroge then got out a game and looked at me.

"You wanna play Exploding snap with us?"

"No thanks. I really want to read this before the first class."

Wouldn't be hard either. You could tell this book was written for your average 11 year old to understand. It was short also, at only a hundred pages or so, most of which were diagrams showing you wand movements.

They looked at each other "Yep Ravenclaw"

I don't know why but I blushed at that.

The rest of the trainride passed uneventfully. We were of course greeted by Hagrid in Hogsmeade. He of course looked just like his movie counterpart but without camera tricks and CGI to make him that big he was truly impressive. He looked like well a giant.

"Firs years, firs years over here." (My Hagrid accent going to suck fair warning ;)

"Wow mister you're really tall. I'm Cedric. Whats your name?" I said in my aw shucks voice as I extended my hand for him to shake.

He smiled as he shook my hand "Hagrid lad. Nice to meet ya."

He then led us to the boats. I got in with Fred and George and a girl who I couldn't name but I know was in the movies. We passed through the vines and the sight of the castle took my breath away.

I know its cliche but man was Hogwarts magical.

We disembarked and then got the shakedown from McGonagall and the spook from the spectrals. Fred and George couldn't help but ask if they really had to fight a troll. Which got a curt "No" in her awesome scottish accent

We were taking into the hall and in front of the stool with the sorting hat. After a few minutes it was my turn.

"Diggory, Cedric"

I went up mind in turmoil.

These damn guys give a Hat sentience just to sort us? WTF isn't that almost like AI. Could I… maybe…. What book can I find it in? Wait isn't that like enslaving a conscious being? They do that to sort kids?

I put the hat on.

"RAVENCLAW!"

The crowd grew silent as the Hat had barely touched my head and then literally screamed so loud some had their ears covered.

Wait I didn't even get to have the conversation to see if you could read my mind, then make you not reveal my secrets. Isn't how this is supposed to go. That's what all the fanfics said.

What the hell are fanfics? I put you in Rav….. The hat said back just as it was removed from my head.

What was it going to say? Ah whatever at least I'm a claw not a snake. Too much drama.

The rest of the sorting went as expected. Fred and George of course went to the lions and….

"Hi I'm Roger Davies." He said extending his hand

Ah yes Fluer's arm candy.

"Cedric Diggory. I see we are housemates."

"Indeed. You had quite the...eventful sorting." He said awkwardly.

I blushed at that. Apparently having the sorting hat literally shout to the rooftops your house was unique.

"Got to make an entrance you know." I said gesturing widely.

"You did do that." He said smirking

That's when Dumasadoor got up and I tuned him out as I opened Standard Book of Spells to read some more. I doubted anything he said would matter in the long run and quite honestly the books and later fanfics had soured my opinion on the man. Yeah he's not evil but man does he have a bad case of always reacting instead of acting.

"I saw you got sorted into the best house, congratulations." Renee said smiling and waving at me to follow her after the feast was over. "Come on I'll show you and the other first years to the common room."

"Be still my aching heart." I said sarcastically under my breath. She was really confusing me and I didn't like it.

We all followed her and arrived at a weird doorknocker.

"We have to answer a riddle to get in." She said as she turned to us.

"Im black and white and read/red all over, what am I?" The doorknocker thing said.

Wait, is this thing for real.

I looked around and everyone was actually thinking hard about this.

"A newspaper" I said and the door swung open.

"It's so obvious now." Someone said.

You have got to be kidding me. How the hell have they not heard this?

Renee turned to me and winked. "Nice work, Cedric"

Dammit foul temptress.

They entered a room with every wall, literally everywhere, covered in shelves and books. It was more of a library than a common room.

"Any book in here can't leave the tower. They have been left here by the countless Claws that came before so you will respect that and them. Am I clear?"

We all shook our heads.

"Good. Now for the rooms. Usually there are two to a room but since we have 15 first years…. Cedric."

"Yes"

"How about you get one all to yourself?" She said smiling.

Oh this woman is an angel.

"Thank you." I said smiling as big as I could.

She led us to the rooms.

"Your's is the last on the right Cedric. Have a good night's sleep"

"Thanks, you too"

I opened the door and looked in. I closed it and latched it. Apparently teacher's had keys or simply used alohomara to open them if they needed in. I looked around and the room was nothing fancy. It had a four poster bed, a small desk, and a wardrobe but it was all mine for the next 7 years.

"Bernard" I shouted

"Yes Master Cedric"

I grinned again.
