It had taken til the day before we left for the holidays but I have finally done it. The Sharp Mind elixir worked on 5 different mice, who all showed perfect memory. They also haven't died over the last two weeks since I administered it, so that's good.
I decided to take the plunge and swallowed the elixir in one shot.
At first I couldn't tell anything was different. Then all of a sudden literally every moment of Cedrics life seemed to flash in front of me at once. I could recall even in Abby's womb the sound of her heartbeat and the birth.
I shuddered at that.
It was a weird sensation. I knew I was experiencing someone else's memories so it felt more like watching a movie then anything. Being a spectator in someone else's mind was surreal.
Where are my memories though?
I didn't seem to have perfect recall over my original life. I could still remember normally like before but for instance I still couldn't remember where Voldemort was right now. I think it was Eastern Europe but I couldn't remember where he was before Harry's 1st year. I definitely did read that at some point. If I had perfect recall I should be able to remember it.
Maybe it's perfect recall biologically so everything Cedric's physical mind has experienced is recalled. My consciousness/soul or whatever that passed from my world to this one is where those memories come from.
"So fucking confusing."
I was starting to get uncomfortable, questioning my existence territory.
"Wait, that probably means Legilemens wouldn't be able to….. Did I go through all that for nothing. You gotta be shitting me." I shouted that last bit to no one.
Well it certainly wasn't for nothing. I could remember literally every word I had read in every book I had read since coming here, which was a lot. I had been spending virtually all of my time reading the books I could from the ROR.
I had been holding back on all the subjects that would be taught in class so I wouldn't be bored but anything that wasn't, that interested me, I devoured. I had always been a fast reader and it really came in handy in Hogwarts.
Unfortunately, magic was far more complicated than just rote memorization. There was a component both physical, the wand movement, and mental, visualization and intent. It was still immensely useful though.
I would have to get some muggle books for my future plans as well.
"Did it work sir?" Bernard asked cautiously.
He had been convinced it wouldn't work or even cause disastrous side effects.
"I believe so. There is a downside to remembering everything though." I said, lingering on my response.
"What is that? Sir"
"I can't forget all the traumatic events. Like you remember that time I fell off that tree in the backyard when I was 7?"
His eyes went wide and he shook his head up and down.
Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.
"I not only remember the pain I can even tell exactly where the break was in my arm." I said rubbing my right arm.
I had completely destroyed that arm. If it hadn't been for magic and St Mungos it would have probably required extensive surgery. With Magic it had been two potions. Magic was amazing.
"Supposedly with practice I can isolate those memories and use them as a defense from Legilemens but right now it kinda sucks." I said rubbing my temples.
"Would you like me to get your pipe, sir?"
"Yes, please." I said sinking into my chair.
He handed me my pipe and then I lit it with a handy little spell I had found for lighting fires without a wand. It was strange to find that even wizard's had survivalists among them.
"By the way Bernard where do you get this. It's pretty good stuff." I said gesturing with the pipe.
"Ah yes sir there was a man that was selling it to the muggles at that place like Hogwarts for muggles." He said smiling.
"They were selling Weed to kids? Damn now I don't feel a bit sorry that you swiped it from them."
Bernard looked indignant at that "You are a kid sir."
I shrugged, took a puff and then offered it to Bernard who has always refused.
"Well continue to steal from him. Might as well his shits are pretty good. Now to use this buzz and new found super memory to work on Project Phone Home."
Bernard popped off and then moments later returned with a pair of simple glass rectangles.
"Begin dictation." I said to the ROR. Then I thought about it and chuckled.
I had been having the room transcribe everything I said onto parchment by using my own pen and parchment so it wouldn't disappear when I left. Now though with perfect recall it was redundant. I continued on anyway. It was part of the process at this point.
"The unbreakable charm was successfully applied. According to Professor Flitwick it should last up to a decade. He did say it would lose its 'Charge' for lack of a better word if significant force is applied against it either all at once or progressively." I threw it against the wall just for the shits and giggles. As expected it didn't break.
"I will now begin long range tests. Bernard." I said handing him the other rectangle and picking up the other one as I continued "Bernard if you would, go back to my parents house and wait for my call."
He popped away and I swiped my finger across the glass surface. Bernard's face appeared.
"Can you hear me Bernard?"
"Yes sir, master Cedric." He said smiling.
"Good now how far can Elf apparition take you." I asked him.
"Anywhere in Europe sir."
"Um, ever been to Berlin?"
"No sir. We did go to Paris before you were born though sir. I think I can get there sir."
"Ok let's do that." Scotland to Paris was a pretty good distance, close to a 1000km.
"Can you hear me now?" I couldn't help but utter the cliche phrase that only I would know here.
"Loud and clear, sir." He said waving.
"Bernard?"
"Yes Sir"
"Are you on the Eiffel Tower?" I had just noticed his vantage point overlooking Paris.
"Yes sir" He said, looking sheepish. "It was a long time ago. It was a very memorable place sir."
"Just don't get spotted. Come back when you're done having fun"
"Sir Yes Sir." He said saluting.
It had taken serious digging to find the charm that the two-way mirror the marauders used but I found it with the help of Madam Pince. Being as good looking as Cedric has its advantages. People always are more willing to help handsome people when they lay on the charm.
I had used the charm to make a prototype cell phone. I used transparent glass because it is, well cooler, sue me. It also makes the other person slightly transparent like a holograph, which appeals to the nerd in me.
The problem of course is its only two way. I have yet to come up with a way to network more then two so you can call different phones. Right now it's a sophisticated walkie talkie. A ridiculously long range walkie talkie that is live video chat with no lag needs no batteries and is unbreakable but still way too limited for what I need for my plans.
Bernard came back with a pop.
I sighed "I guess it's time to get back to the grindstone." I said and the room morphed back to the Room of Lost things.
There was now a new pile of antiques and even a rusty 57 Chevy and a 69 Mustang.
I had found that by buying broken or just worn out stuff, once repaired with a simple repairo, brought a lot of money in the muggle world. Apparently House Elf's appear like slightly autistic humans to muggles. Bernard had been going into the muggle world to sell it.
"Let's do this," I said to Brenard. He nodded.
"Repairo"
