Chapter 37: Bitter Return

Chapter 37: Bitter Return

The passionate voice of the Black man echoed as he delivered his speech.

"You must understand, this is unequivocally an act of terrorism, an assault on the freedom and democracy of our federation. Who can tolerate such acts? We have identified the roots of these wicked people as originating from that malevolent nation which has been shielded all along."

Behind him, a holographic map displayed a small nation deemed the source of evil by the federation.

"In order to uphold justice and protect our citizens, I believe this plan is necessary."

The Black man snapped his fingers, and a series of videos and recordings appeared on the holographic map.

"These evildoers have begun developing nuclear weapons. Very soon, they will possess the power to threaten us. We cannot delay; we must preemptively strike..."

"Wait, Mr. President, implementing Plan B will cause an international upheaval, and other countries will scrutinize this plan critically."

An elder with graying hair sighed heavily, "This is no trivial matter; I hope you consider it carefully."

"We cannot wait. While we hesitate, our enemies are already enacting their heinous deeds. They will swiftly destroy our cities and unleash biochemical weapons on our citizens. This is intolerable to Washington."

The Black man shook his head. "I, like you, abhor war, yet this is a necessary evil, a righteous act to prevent a greater catastrophe. Remember the first and second atomic bombs in history—they killed over a hundred thousand people, yet ended a war that cost that country 2.1 million lives. We are not starting a war; we are creating peace, wielding the hammer of justice to spare countless innocent lives."

...

Dizziness overwhelmed Alexander as he awoke from the script world to find himself back in the vast hospital ward of the Necrospace.

Beside him lay Eric, the middle school student, with the flickering static of the TV mountain not far away.

Before them, something even more bizarre unfolded—a skeleton mysteriously appeared, seated and still showing signs of activity. Flesh then began to regrow on the bones, organs writhing into place from within the cavity. In less than a minute, the skeleton became a complete human form.

Carmen, having experienced death, had returned to Necrospace once more. This was his fifth consecutive survival from the script world.

Resurrected, Carmen immediately lunged at Alexander, lifting him up.

"What about Yulin? What did you all do?"

"He sacrificed himself, breaking the cycle of the Lermontov box to save you from that world," Alexander sighed. "He said he hated owing his life to others, so he'd repay you with his life."

"Why didn't you stop him?" Carmen's eyes were bloodshot with anger.

Alexander shook off Carmen's grip and glared back.

"Do you think I could have stopped him? Once someone like him makes a decision, it can't be obstructed. He even forced me to destroy the Lermontov box to prevent you from sacrificing yourself to summon him back..."

Hearing Alexander's words, Carmen slumped to the ground in defeat.

The TV mountain screens flickered, revealing Pinocchio's face once more.

"Congratulations, you three have returned alive to the Evil Spirit Space. However, delightful lives will continue. Now, let's announce your points. Unfortunately, all of you surpassed 300 points; I expected someone to be eliminated, how disappointing."

"Shut up!" Alexander crossed his arms, speaking coldly. Pinocchio's attitude was grating; it was frustrating to hear.

"Don’t be so angry; it’s just a joke. First, Alexander: completed the standard main quest, 200 points; nightmare main quest, 400 points; side quest, 500 points; death flag evasion, 300 points; defeated a dangerous entity, 600 points, totaling 2000 survival points."

"Only 2000 points, that’s shockingly low!" Alexander shook his head, realizing Yulin's kill had been counted toward his own total.

"Next, Carmen: completed the standard main quest, 200 points; nightmare main quest, 400 points; personal side quest 'Reunite with Team,' 500 points, totaling 1100 survival points."

Carmen remained still, head drooped, indifferent to Pinocchio's words. Yulin's death had clearly hit him hard.

"If not for unforeseen circumstances, Carmen would have earned more points. Fortunately, veteran players like him usually have deep resources..."

Alexander sighed, seeing Carmen's distress from Yulin's loss.

"Lastly, Eric..."

Pinocchio smirked, pausing dramatically while the middle school student Eric swallowed hard, waiting tensely for his results.

"Completed one main quest, 200 points; nightmare main quest, 400 points; protected Yulin through the fourth act, 100 points; death flag evasion, 300 points, totaling 1000 points."

Eric breathed a sigh of relief, feeling like the biggest winner for surviving and earning 1000 points.

"Pinocchio, I have a tape from the script world. Can it be exchanged for survival points?" Alexander asked, holding the "Nemesis Tape" from the script world.

"Yes, the Nemesis Tape can be exchanged for 1000 survival points. Would you like to redeem it?"

Surprisingly high!

Alexander considered the low survival points provided through the main and side quests in Evil Spirit Space, likely due to the standard difficulty of the script. However, killing dangerous entities and retrieving script items offered substantial rewards.

Was Evil Spirit Space implying that risks bring great rewards?

Alexander smirked coldly.

"After your first script mission ends, you have a three-month rest period in the real world. A kind reminder: revealing any information about Evil Spirit Space will lead to immediate execution."

Pinocchio chuckled sinisterly.

"But before you leave, Evil Spirit Space will provide some beginner benefits."
