Roadside camp

A little off from the side of the road, Beck and Evie found a small clearing where they decided to make camp. On one side of the clearing there was a large fallen tree and on the other side a small creek ran through the glade. The sky was rather open and cloudless so the two of them decided that no shelter would be necessary for tonight. They flatened the grass around the base of the felled tree and set down two blankets to sleep on.

Night fell and the moon rose high in the sky, the ghostly beams of light the only thing that pierced the pitch black of the clearing. The cloudless sky was a jumble of stars, it was just beautiful. I wonder if it's this Beautiful in Crafton right now, Beck couldn't help but feel sentimental. It was the first day out of Crafton and he already missed the place, he dreaded the rest of the long journey ahead of them especially if he already felt this home sick, but he knew that for Evie's sake he must stay positive and get them to safety.

The mourning came to the sound of bird song, the sun was bright, and forest was alive with animals and bugs humming their way through the trees. Beck groaned as he lifted himself off his blanket, the night had not been easy for Beck. He struggled to get to sleep because of the pain in his back and to make it worse whenever he moved to find a new spot there was always one annoying rock digging into his side no matter where he went. He rubbed his eyes and stretched. As his senses caught up to him, he noticed a most delicious scent. Just over from him near the creek on the other side of the clearing Evie sat stoking a fire and holding a cooking pot over the coals. As beck walked over he also noticed a pan on the other side of the fire, in the pan was a very encouraging sight fried bacon, wild onion and a small pile of fresh mushrooms. “wow Evie, this is quite the meal you have prepared” Beck said “thank you, i take much pride in my cooking skills” Evie replied a broad smile on her face, “ill get our plates” said Beck very eager to dig in, Beck was so exited to try Evies cooking that he almost forgot about his injured back, he took a step then caught himself with his crutch before he fell. He went over to the felled tree to where his bag lay and fished around till he found his wooden plates. Beck grabbed the plates and some cutlery then went back over to join Evie by the fire. “where did you find the onions and mushrooms” Beck asked, he hadn't seen any on their walk the previous day, “over there, on the other side of the creek” Evie replied, “wow you truly are a magician” Beck said in mock disbelief, Evie laughed and took the plates. She opened the pot and dished up some exquisite looking potatoes, then piled the bacon and mixed vegetables onto the plate as well.

“goodness Evie if you keep serving up meals like this the journey from here is going to feel a lot shorter for sure” Beck commented after wolfing down his loaded plate “and if you keep eating them that fast you might just get a stomach ache” She replied trying her best not to smirk as she looked at her still half full plate of food.

Beck was pleased that Evie was lighting up again and for the first moment since Beck had left Crafton, he felt that everything would be alright. “it's crazy what a good meal can do to raise your spirits” Beck commented as he washed the pots and utensils.

At about ten o'clock in the mourning Beck and Evie were back on the road, a newfound energy driving them on toward their destination.
