Chapter 3: Reap What You Sow

Chapter 3: Reap What You Sow

Chapter 3: Reap What You Sow

I am in my last day of hunting mobs. The old coot would be laughing at my misery for sure. I didnt expect the fatalities the dish gave me. I never thought that having your satiety level on 20% causes your damage to lessen by 15%. This really made me kill mobs at a slow rate at first.

Every mob I faced, I always needed to concentrate or else I will get killed easily. My halved hp really was a big blow on my side. I needed to parry attacks so much at first. Being hit once or twice had my hp go down to the critical level easily. Though true to the old man's words, I really gained some useful skills.

Remembering the past days, I wanted to return the favor to the old coot. If not for the notifications the system gave, I would have given up from the start.

*Flashback: Day 1*

Having to fight using mostly my kicks and fists, I always had to read the opponents movements before I attack, or else I would get hit. This continued for many hours, me dodging and countering attacks.

A +1 in agility made me thrive more. A bit later I became a level 2 newbie player.

I was getting the hang of it, until the first of my miseries came. My satiety level went down to 30% causing my attack damage to reduce by 10%. Seeing as my weapons are my hands and feet, my damage was already low to begin with, but with the deduction it was already a measly 4-6.

I nearly went back to the village to buy some bread, but I noticed something as I continued to fight enemies one after another. As my satiety level went down to 20%, a reduction of 15% was given to my damage. But, as I was getting accustomed to my new fighting style, a few notifications sounded.

[+ 1 Strength]

[+ 1 Agility]

[+ 1 Dexterity]

[+1 Vitality]

The time I gained stats seemed to have lessen as I continued to fight with low satiety level. What a jackpot! Thus, I happily went looking for enemies.

Looking at my experience bar, it was in 24%. Smiling I logged out after a day in game, gaining +2 in agility, +1 in strength, + 1 in dexterity,  and + 2 in vitality. A few drops from my enemies in my bag.

*Day 2*

After a well deserved power nap, I logged in to continue my so called training. Doing my routine of dodging and attacking, I searched for enemies to fight.

A couple of hours in game, a sudden system notification made me stop.

[You gained the skill ]

Due to your constant countering of attacks, you generated the skill

Countering an attack will now have a change to deal critical damage. As the level of the skill upgrades the percentage to deal critical hits will increase.

2% chance to deal a critical hit.

+5 Luck

Passive: Beginner level 1(00%)

Seeing my first skill made me laugh as I stood there. My sweat and tears are now being generously answered. I continued to hunt monsters, ignoring the eyes of fellow players in the field. Moving to a more secluded area, I threaded with a smile on my face.

Logging out after a day, I gained my first skill and some stats: + 2 vitality, +3 agility, +1 strength and +2 dexterity. My level gaining 1, making me a level 3 noob with an experience bar at 33%.

Now I was sure that having my hp points in a constant dangerous level with low satiety helps in gaining free stats in game.

Knowing that the system wouldnt have missed this kind of thing, I am sure that its only in the beggining levels that has this advantage.

*Day 3*

Now I have moved from rats to bunnies. This monsters moved faster than the rats, but thanks to my stat gains, I manage to move on par with them. They had a skill called [Mad Dash] which is way on another level than the rats tackles. At first a hit from this skill had my hp blinking red. It was only luck that it takes time for the bunnies to use this skill again. After a really well developed plan of dodging the skill, I finally had a way to counter the attack.

This bunnies gave more experience points than the rats. Hour after hour, one battle after another, I finally gained a skill that I really need.

You have gained the skill

Due to your constant dodging of attacks, you have generated the skill.

Enemy attacks will now have a chance to miss. Note: Enemies who are stronger than you will lower the chance by half.

2% chance for enemies to miss

+2 Agility

+1 Dexterity

Passive: Beginner Level 1 (00%)

Now that I have gained a skill that I wanted, I went and continued the hunt.

Ending my day with a satisfied smile, I gained another level, making me a level 4 newbie.

A stat gain for: Agility +3,  strength+2, vitality+2 and dexterity + 2

*Day 4 - Title: Fight Another Day*

I wandered to a territory that a newbie like me wasn't meant to enter. Being pestered by party requests from players, I looked for a hidden area where I can do my thing.

Having pride from my lowly accomplishments,  I stumbled upon a small cave hidden by thorny bushes. Not fearing any bunnies or rats, I walked inside the cave, just barely enough for me to walk in to. Thinking that rabbits are using it as a burrow, I went deeper until I was stared upon by two yellow eyes. I instantly knew that I will die if this yellow eyed monster attacks me. Knowing that, I needed to run, I jumped backwards and faced the exit. Instantly running for my life.

Thankfully, the monster only followed me until the entrance. As it came to the light, its long body covered in scales was seen. A slithering reptile came to the light, a snake that was long enough to wrap my body stopped at the entrance. Judging from the huge bulk in its body, it just finished eating something.

My sight was met by its own gaze, my body seemed to be immovable for a second. The snake seemed to have mocked me, saying, 'You are just food in my eyes.' It slithered inside as I regained my senses.

Looking at its trail, "I promise, I will end your life one day."

Escaping a life and death situation, I looked for enemies along the way. Heading back to the prairie, I hunted rabbits and rats again.

A notification caused me to stop my hunt.

You have reached the capacity limit of weight in your inventory. You cannot attack due to being over the capacity limit.

You are currently under the status effect . Movement speed halved.

Heading to town, I slowly evaded the groups of players hunting. It took me an hour and a half to arrive to my destination. Looking for an item shop, I went and checked the prices of the materials I obtained. The prices were really cheap, seeing as too many players hunt the monsters that drop this mats. Nothing more to argue about, I sold the mats in my inventory, leaving a stack of rabbits fur and rats fur, each at 100. Receiving my hard earned money, I went to search for a tailor shop to upgrade my measly items, 6 gold, 59 silvers and 43 coppers in hand.

After being interrogated by the tailor, I walked out in a full leather outfit. Due to the stack of furs from the rabbits and rats, I only needed to pay 2 gold for a complete set. Now I had an armor, pants, undershirt, boots and gloves. I was wondering if my gloves and boots durability would last long, with me using them as weapons. The system didnt specifically say something about it.

My next stop was a weapons smith, a certain weapon would be of use but to my dismay, the weapon I was looking for isnt for sale. Walking back to the fields, I let out my frustration on the monsters.

Today I gained only stats: +2 strength, + 3 dexterity, +3 agility,  and +3 vitality.

*Day 5*

With my new items, I now have a decent defense corresponding to my level. The rabbits attack didnt damage me like how it used to be. Though tanking 2 or more mobs cant be done due to my halved hp, I now hunted more efficiently.

Seeing a group of players hunting rabbits, I now see why the old coot said those words. With proper knowledge and skills, you can defeat an enemy in a one on one battle. Or like the female player in the video, you can take a group of mobs alone.

I changed my location once more, as female players started to take notice of me. Like them, I also am a newbie player, yet they see me as someone who can give them items or help them level. They even bribe other players with their bodies just to be boosted in leveling. I noticed that the game has a marriage system, but it has a level restriction of a hundred before you can marry someone. Still, this guys make me laugh. In any rpg game, not every player looks like their real appearance in real life.

Continuing my hunt, I eliminated every mob in my path. Reaching level 5, I had decided to change the mobs I hunt again. Moving further away from the bunny mobs, I came upon mobs that looked like rats. But they had one difference from normal mobs I killed before, they had giant teeth protruding from their mouth. *A.N-Think of Raticate in pokemon*

Also, they had red names, making them aggressive. Just stepping in their line of sight will cause them to charge at you. Noticing my predicament, I searched for a good spot where I can lure them one by one.

The rats were like dogs in size, which is why I decided to call them dograts. Thank fully they had a good distance from each other. I found a good place to lure the dograts, a small clearing before reaching a forested area.

Testing the enemies damage and mannerisms when fighting, I lured one to my chosen place. The dograt instantly ran after me, and when I stopped, it lounged its skill on me, . Dodging its attack, the skill left a small crater on the ground.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

'Shit, its a power type skill.'

Seeing as it cant stop its skill once activated, I found its weak point. Its speed was that of a bunny, but what the bunny lack, the dograt has- attack power. Thanks to my additional stats and skills, the dograt cannot hit me with its skill. I hastily moved around it and did an axe kick.

I used my self made combo, a series of kicks and strikes, though mostly kicks with few punches on the side. The dograt retaliated but with my momentum, it wasnt fast enough to deal out attacks. After a few minutes the dograt finally died. It has a thick fur which caused my damage to lessen a lot, but thanks to my attack speed I can manage somehow.

'If only I had a knuckle weapon or something.'

I sighed as I sat to recover my lost hp. Thus, I continued my onslaught facing the dograts for a day.

Looking at the stats I gained, I smiled happily knowing I am nearing level 6.

+3 agility, +2 strength, + 3 dexterity,  +2 vitality.

*Day 6- The Coveted Skills*

Fighting for straight hours really did a lot for me. First, my mind was constantly in the game, not even a thought of my ex wife visited me. Second, my body has been accustomed to the the movements needed for fighting. And last, I was enjoying my life in game.

After a relaxing sleep and bath, I logged in to the game. My battle with the dograts continued as the duration of the food the old coot gave me neared its expiration date. I finally got my first rare drop, after fighting a battle that nearly got me killed. The monster was an Elite dograt, its fur had a different color than the normal dograt. Looking at the shiny object on the ground, I picked it up and read the info.

[Cat O' Bell Charm (Rare)]

Type: Accessory - Earing

An odd bell once belonging to a hunter. The bell enchanted by the Cat deity for her mighty hunters.

Effects: Instills the status effect on small type monsters. causes enemies to lose 10% of their prowess. Only  small type enemies can feel the effect. Due to being an item skill, the effect isnt on par with the original skill.

It looked like a bell used in animal collars, the size was like just right for it to be worn as an accessory.

Smiling at the rare loot in my hands, I equipped it on my left ear. Trying the accessories effectiveness, I walked towards a dograt. A sudden sound  emanated from the bell. The dograt seemed to have lost its aggressiveness. Seeing it as an opportunity to attack I used my combo on the enemy.

The charm really helped a lot as I hunted more dograts. The loss in their prowess really helped. Due to this, I continued to slaughter them 1 by 1.

As dograt after dograt fell, a level up notification sounded. I am now level 6, smiling happily, I kicked and striked the next dograt. After what seemed to be an endless killing of mobs, I gained a skill which complimented my way of fighting.

"YES!!!!"

I shouted loudly as I finished reading the skills information. I finally have a way to deal more damage.

'Sweating blood, it really seems to be that way.'

The hard work finally paid off. The old coot  really did help me gain some important skills. Though, its through blood and tears that I finally manage to generate the skills I got. Continuing my battle, I roamed the area looking for enemies.

I finally logged out with a smile on my face, I gained 2 skills, a level and some stats.

+2 vitality, +3 dexterity, +2 agility, and + 3 strength.

*end of flashback*

Current Day

I rested beneath the shade of a pine tree, after noticing that I have been fighting for many hours. Looking at the sight in front of me, a party of players were heading to my hunting ground. It was the last day of my training.

Looking at them, I noticed that the party consists of 3 females and 2 males.  All beastmen. This game really gave a wide variety of species for players to play. They started hunting dograts. One of the males tanked a dograt while the other male with two of the females started attacking the dograt. A tank, 2 attackers, 1 ranged and if im not mistaken the other missy would have a skill that can heal.

Seeing as only at level 10 can you first change into a beginner class. Thinking about it now, do the game have a class which use my fighting style? I should research for it later. With a really well developed game, its impossible if they dont have a job for such a style.

The party did really well against the first dograt, after defeating 1 enemy, the party seemed to have decided to take on more enemies. That would be stupid, because some dog rats roam around the area. Even I nearly died when that elite dograt stumbled upon me battling a normal one.

The tank did lure 2 dograts, they were doing well due to the attacks of the mobs not breaking the shield stance the tank had. They continued for a while until they saw the elite dograt. Having two dograts lured already, the tank was stupid to think he can manage the elite dograt. Once the elite dograt noticed him, he didnt expect the enemy to have other skills. Those teeth were not for show.

was its secondary skill, I nearly died after being scraped by the attack. It has a cooldown once used by the dograt but it has the damage to destroy that wanna be tanks defense.

Seeing that familiar stance, the dograt emitted a slightly dark aura. That tank would die for sure. And I was right, the tank just stood there, thinking he can shield the damage but unlucky for him. The attack broke his stance and he was bitten to death. The other members saw that they would die afterwards, having lured 3 normal dograts and an elite dograt they tried their best to run.

The swordsman wanna be managed to kill 1 normal dograt, but the other mobs they lured killed him after. The three female players ran with their might but unlucky for them, this mobs dont stop once they aggro you. The archer wanna be managed to shoot arrows as she ran but they didnt hit the mark. The thief wanna be was the first one to ran when the dograt killed the tank, she had a good distance away from the other two.

The healer was left to face the mobs with her low agility. Being left alone by the other two female players who has more speed than her, she stopped and held her staff in an attacking position.

'Wow, better fight dying than running away. I commend you. She was left to die by the other two, a sacrifice for them to escape.'

I ran towards her location, with my speed, I was there in an instant. Not wasting my time, I initiated first blood. The first one died after some hits. 3 more to go. They aggro'd me instead of the healer. Launching their attacks I countered as I dodged. Good for me that I was accustomed in fighting this dograts. After a few more exchange of blows, the elite dog rat was left.

Back flipping away from its attack, I unleashed my self made combo, a series of kicks and strikes ending it with a roundhouse kick of death.

The bell chimed as I moved towards the would be healer, "Are you okay?"

"Ye...s." She finally answered.

"Thats good. You better choose your allies well, or else you will be sacricifed again in the future."

I helped her up as she stumbled down earlier. I turned around and walked away after comfirming that she was okay.

'If the old coot saw me, he would be laughing his ass off at me acting like a hero.'

I hastily moved away and continued my hunt. After a certain notification,  I finally manage to last a week long.

Gaining another level, I am now a level 8 newbie player. With my stat gain of: +3 strength, +3 vitality, +4 agility and +4 dexterity.

Smiling happily, I am now able to sleep for more than an hour. Logging out, 'I never did buy a gift for Bell. Should go look for something tomorrow.'
