4. The Citrus Sea

4. The Citrus Sea

The world turns from the dense, confectionary foliage of the gumdrop shrubs to the open expanse of the vast soda lake, stretching out as far as I can see. A riot of bubbles breaks the surface of the effervescent orange liquid, the scent of sweet citrus tickling my nostrils. The sharp pop-pop-pop of a million bubbles bursting sets the air vibrating, a sugary symphony that tickles my eardrums. As the early morning sunlight catches the rising bubbles, the lake twinkles like a giant's glittery orange soda.

Beside me, Morlin's eyes widen, a grin spreading across his face as he takes in the sight. Rhae, who's been silent since we left the owls, tilts her head, appraising the lake with an unreadable expression. For a moment, we're just three people standing at the edge of an incredible, impossible sight, lost in the sheer wonder of it.

But the moment breaks as Rhae abruptly draws our attention. Her brows drawn into a thoughtful furrow, she squints at the lake. "I think we can all agree that this," she waves a hand at the vast lake, "is the "fizzing sprite" we need to cross."

Morlin nods, "Yes, it fits with the clue." His gaze turns to me and I simply give a quick nod, my mind already buzzing with thoughts. As I stare out at the bubbling soda, the fizzing sprite from the limerick, I can't shake off the question of how we're supposed to cross it. But if the past challenges have taught us anything, it's that together, we can figure it out.

I clear my throat, interrupting the silence that has settled between us. "Okay, we need to figure out how deep it is."

As we approach the bubbling soda lake, a collective silence hanging in the air while our minds attempt to churn out a solution. A pit in my stomach grows as the sight of the fizzing orange expanse consumes my vision. It's like a sparkling orange puzzle, and we're missing the pieces.

I reach for a long peppermint stick lying on the shore. The cool touch of its ridges reminds me of Christmas back home. Planting it into the orange soda lake, I give it a gentle stir and try to gauge the depth. The stick disappears more than halfway into the effervescent orange before hitting the bottom. I pull it out, now wet and dripping. "Too deep to walk across," I announce, flicking a few droplets back into the lake.

Rhae frowns, looking at her Sugar Rush Rhino who seems to be as nonplussed as we are. "Well, what about swimming across?" Her eyes, still holding the fire from our previous win, glint with the challenge. But Morlin immediately shakes his head.

"Bad idea," he says, adjusting his glasses as he looks at the bubbling lake. "Even if we could swim across, soda is acidic. Spending too much time in it isn't advisable."

I can't help but wince at the thought of our skin burning from the prolonged contact. Rhae's face also falls, her initial enthusiasm giving way to a concerned frown.

Morlin, his brow furrowed in deep thought, holds up his Sugarshifter. "What if we build a boat?" But no sooner has he finished his sentence than a look of uncertainty clouds his face. "No, the soda would probably dissolve it." He deflates, his Sugarshifter slowly lowering. When no alternative solution presents itself, he heaves a sigh, shoulders drooping slightly. His usually bright eyes cloud over with self-doubt and frustration. The confident and analytical Morlin, crumbling under the weight of the impossible challenge, is a sight that tugs at my heart.

I glance down at my Lollipop Wand, an idea slowly forming. "Maybe I can try altering the soda. You know, solidify it enough for us to cross. Like I did with the chocolate mud." I try to sound confident, but my voice trembles.

As soon as I voice my idea, I can feel a tingle of self-doubt creeping in. The lake is so much larger than the maze... can I really control such a large area?

Rhae looks at me with a mix of apprehension and hope. "That could work, Vosi, but... you have to remember that if your wand fails mid-way, we're in the soup. Literally." She gives a weak laugh, but her eyes are deadly serious. "We could end up stuck here forever, Vosi."

Her words send a chill down my spine. The stakes are too high, but so is the potential payoff. We need to get across this orange lake. We need to reach the Candy Castle. And to do that, I need to face my fears, push past my self-doubt, and embrace the full potential of my Lollipop Wand.

"Okay," I breathe out, tightening my grip on the wand. "Let's do this."

Suddenly, Morlin steps forward. He's always been the problem solver, always trying to figure out a plan B.

"How about we use a combination of both your abilities?" He suggests, his face lighting up with an idea. "Vosi, you could use your wand to solidify a smaller path, a trail. Rhae, with your rhino's energy burst, we could dart across before the soda reverts."

"But we won't all fit on Rush," Rhae replies, patting the rhino's thick hide.

It's my turn again. I can feel the ghost of self-doubt lingering, a knot in my stomach. I could allow it to paralyze me, or I could harness it, use it to fuel my determination. I opt for the latter, shaking off the fear, rising to meet the challenge.

"Morlin," I start, swallowing down my nervousness, "could you shape your Sugarshifter into a big, bowl-like sled?" I propose, turning towards Rhae, "Rhae, what if you and Rush push us on this sled, while I... while I harden the path ahead, as we move along?"

Silence follows my words, and for a moment, I worry that they will shoot down my suggestion too. But then Morlin grins, excitement sparkling in his eyes. "Vosi, that's brilliant!"

Rhae, too, can't suppress a smile, her eyes dancing with anticipation. "Let's do it. I'm ready for a rhino-sled ride!"

As the rush of determination washes over me, Morlin starts working on his Sugarshifter. I watch as it morphs from a peppermint cane to a large, intricately detailed bowl-sled. The transformation sends tiny sugar sparks flying, creating a miniature light show against the backdrop of the orange soda lake.

Across the way, Rhae is engaged in a different task. The gumdrop bushes at the edge of the lake quiver under the Rhino's excited chomping. Each bite sends a burst of energy rippling across the Rhino's hide, its glow intensifying like a firework about to explode.

Rhae's connection with her Rhino never ceases to amaze me either. That symbiotic relationship between her and Rush, the sheer power she commands, it's nothing short of awe-inspiring.

"Nearly there!" Morlin calls out, his voice a blend of concentration and excitement. He places the finishing touches on the sled-bowl, making sure it's sturdy enough to carry us. With a final flourish, he smoothes out the edges, making it as slick as possible to slide over the carbonated lake.

Taking a deep breath, I step toward the bowl-sled, the soft squish of candy grass underfoot anchoring me to the moment. I hop in, the sweetness of the sled under me, a stark contrast to the fizzy tang of the soda lake in front of us.

I reach out my hand to Morlin. His fingers are slightly sticky from the sugar, but his grip is solid. I carefully maneuver myself into the sled-bowl beside him. We sit, the anticipation buzzing between us like electricity.

I can't help but glance over my shoulder at Rhae. Her Rhino is now pulsating with a soft light, a clear sign that it's ready to release a burst of energy. "Ready?" I shout across to her, the sound echoing around us.

In response, Rhae leaps onto her Rhino, gripping tightly. She returns my gaze, her eyes sparkling with that familiar mix of determination and excitement. "We're more than ready," she yells back.

Squaring my shoulders, I point my Lollipop Wand towards the fizzing soda lake before us. I feel a pulse of energy ripple through the wand, an extension of my own will, transforming the liquid chaos into a solid, hard-candy path. The orange soda bubbles and froths at the edges, but right in front of us, it takes on a glassy sheen, solidifying into a bridge of vibrant orange candy. "Alright," I breathe, a trace of a smile dancing on my lips, "Here goes nothing."

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Rhae's Rhino begins its slow, steady push, nudging the bowl-sled forward. It's an odd sensation, a mixture of sliding and floating, but I force my attention back to the path ahead. I can't afford any distractions. I maintain my focus, reaching out with my wand, solidifying the soda as we go, creating a thin, but stable path that glistens under the candy sky.

"Keep it steady, Vosi!" Morlin's voice startles me for a moment, but it's a necessary reminder. "You've got this," he adds, more softly. His trust fuels my determination, steadying my nerves. I lock onto his encouraging gaze for a moment before returning my focus to the path.

One minute, then two, pass in a rhythm of intense concentration. The bridge grows longer and the shoreline recedes in the distance. We're making progress, cutting through the effervescence, leaving behind a trail of hardened soda. My heart echoes the rhythmic pulse of the wand, each beat whispering a mantra in my veins, "Keep going. You've got this."

And for a moment, everything is going well. The once insurmountable soda lake is steadily becoming a hurdle we've almost overcome. A laugh of delight bubbles up from my chest, ringing out over the sparkling lake. "We're doing it!" I can't help but exclaim. Yes, things are going well, and for the first time since entering Cryptic Candy, I allow myself to hope.

I'm caught mid-laughter as a sudden surge of speed rocks our little candy bowl-boat. My heart skips a beat. Rhae's Rhino, hyped up on the energy from the rapid momentum, has begun to rush, pushing our vessel faster than my wand can harden the path in front of us. A warning bell sounds in my head, amplified by the sudden roar of bubbling soda that grows louder as we lose our course. "Rhae!" I shout. "Slow down!"

But my words are snatched away by the effervescence, lost in the fizzing soundscape, and it's too late. The world tilts. Our bowl-sled lurches, slipping off the edge of the hard candy path into the foamy orange soda lake. My heart lurches with it.

We're floating. The hard candy bowl has become a bobbing vessel, carrying Morlin and me in a sea of fizzy soda. Rhae and her Rhino are stranded on the candy path, unable to move forward as the path dissolves into soda just a step ahead of them. There's a tense pause, the brief calm before the storm.

My eyes meet Morlin's, the worry in his gaze mirrored in mine. We're stuck. I feel my fingers tighten around my wand, my anxiety skyrocketing. We have to get out of here. Fast. If this bowl dissolves...

And then, an idea sparks. Instinctively, I whirl around, extending my wand towards the unhardened path in front of Rhae.

Beads of sweat dot my forehead as I focus, the wand's glow intensifying. The path in front of Rhae and her rhino solidifies, and I feel a rush of relief. The Rhino steps forward, its foot landing solidly on the newly formed path, and Rhae lets out a breath I didn't know she was holding.

As Rush approaches the edge of the candy path, it gently nudges our bobbing candy bowl with its horn. I almost lose my balance as our makeshift boat lurches forward, sliding across the surface of the soda lake. But I hold on, the beat of my heart steadying me. I smile, the taste of victory sweet on my lips. We're moving. We're going to make it.

"I told you we could do it," I call over my shoulder to Morlin, my voice shaking with the mix of adrenaline and relief. His responding smile, though tinged with exhaustion, is bright enough to outshine the twinkling soda lake.

Our boat glides across the fizzy orange lake as I press forward with my wand, frantically carving a path. The Rhino follows dutifully, nudging our bowl forward with its horn whenever we slow down. Rhae's laughter cuts through the sticky air, a beacon of optimism in this sugary madness.

But then Morlin's voice cuts through, startlingly serious. "Vosi," he warns, his eyes flickering anxiously from me to the bowl. "This soda's eating through our boat. We have to move faster."

I glance down and my breath catches. He's right. The candy bowl is already beginning to dissolve at the edges, slowly being nibbled away by the acidic soda. We're literally in a sinking ship. A fresh wave of panic slams into me but I swallow it down. Now's not the time.

"You heard the man, Rhae. Faster," I shout, pouring more energy into my wand, hardening the orange soda quicker. It transforms beneath my touch, a path of safety solidifying in the bubbly danger.

Rhae's eyes widen, and she snaps the reins, urging the Rhino to quicken its pace. The beast grunts in response, and with a swift push, our bowl lurches forward, gaining speed.

My heart pounds in my chest as we race against the clock, a unique countdown where the finish line isn't a ribbon but the dissolving bottom of our bowl. The shore approaches, a beacon of safety growing bigger with each passing second. I can practically feel the dry candy soil beneath my feet.

Just when I feel the bottom of the bowl give way beneath us, we hit the shore, Rush carrying us the last few feet. Morlin and I tumble out of the disintegrating candy bowl onto the hard candy land. I look back to see our temporary boat dissolve into nothingness behind us, disappearing into the orange soda it had bravely navigated.

We're safe. We're exhausted, our breaths coming out in ragged pants as we collapse on the shore, but we're safe. We've made it, yet again. There's no jubilant laughter this time, just silent gratitude as we gaze at the now calm soda lake. The sweetness of victory, though muted by fatigue, is present in every one of our sighs.

"Alright," Rhae finally breaks the silence, her voice a tired whisper. "What's next?"

"Isn't it obvious," I say, lifting a weary arm to point ahead. The Candy Castle stands in front of us, a majestic structure whose walls shift like kaleidoscopic sugar crystals, reflecting the bright mid-day sun in a dazzling display of colors. Its walls ripple and writhe, like molten candy, creating a spectacle of shifting hues that's at once magical and terrifying. There's a quiet awe that settles amongst us as we take it in.

"And the castle to your will aligns," Morlin says, his voice steady despite the tired lines etched deeply on his face.

The limerick sinks into my mind, turning and twisting. What does it mean? Can we really bend the castle to our will? I gnaw my lip, my gaze never straying from the mesmerizing structure before us. "I...I don't know," I admit, my voice barely more than a murmur. "What does that even mean?"

"It means we got a hundred million reasons to find out," Rhae retorts, standing with a groan. Her usual brazen smirk has been replaced with a thin line of determination. It's sobering. Her tone, although sharp, is not unkind. It's a needed reminder of what's at stake.

The urgency in Rhae's words kickstart my adrenaline. I activate my display, the glowing digits of the game timer cutting through the calm. Only four hours remain. Fear pricks at my nerves, but it's drowned out by a swelling tide of resolve.

With a grim nod, I push to my feet. There's no time for fear. No time for doubt. We have a castle to conquer. I reach down to Morlin, Rhae following suit. His hands close around ours and we haul him up. There's a renewed sense of purpose in our little group, our faces set and determined. We've come too far to falter now.

As we begin our trek toward the Candy Castle and our final sugar-coated challenge, I can't help but think of the limerick again. And the castle to your will aligns.

The words echo in my mind, a riddle holds that our fate in its seven cryptic words.
