2. A Bittersweet Climb

2. A Bittersweet Climb

The twinkling crystal-rock candy mountains loom in front of us, their jagged peaks contrasting the soft cotton candy clouds above. They're intimidating, sure, but also undeniably majestic. I stand there, staring at the towering monoliths of sparkling candy, the glinting reflections of countless colors off their surfaces making the scene otherworldly.

"Whoa," I murmur, captivated by the radiant beauty yet instinctively aware of the latent danger. "You guys seeing this?"

"Yeah," Morlin replies, awe etched in his usually pragmatic tone. "It's... unreal."

Rhae merely grunts in affirmation, her eyes gleaming with excitement, a stark contrast to the fear I'm doing my best to mask. But I guess that's just how Rhae is - always ready to leap into the unknown, damn the consequences.

While I'm busy marveling at the kaleidoscopic mountainscape, Morlin has already taken out the limerick. His brow furrows, the ever-present analytical cogwheels of his mind spinning as he studies the second line.

"'Ascend where the jellybean finds.'" He reads aloud, looking from the limerick to the mountains. "I think we're supposed to scale this thing."

Rhae impatiently starts marching toward the base of the mountain, her hand instinctively reaching for the sturdy shoulder of her Sugar Rush Rhino. I hurry to catch up, cautioning her. "Rhae, wait! Look at how the rocks are moving. This isn't just a climb; it's a puzzle. We need to figure out the safest path."

She turns back, her expression a mix of annoyance and anticipation. "Well, then, let's get figuring," she says. The tone of her voice doesn't leave room for arguments.

"Fine, let's strategize on the move," I say, matching her determination. We start walking along the base of the mountain, the rock candy crags towering above us, ominous yet fascinating. Morlin is silent, his gaze fixed on the looming mountain as he fiddles with his Sugarshifter.

"Rhae, not everything can be solved with a bull rush," Morlin finally pipes up, his tone firm. "We need a plan."

Rhae shoots him a disgruntled look. "And we will get one. But first, we need to get a feel of the terrain."

Her impulsiveness is getting to Morlin, but it's kind of endearing to me. It reminds me that there's a world outside of meticulous plans and well-thought-out strategies. Morlin's intellectualism, on the other hand, is a rock amidst our whirlwind of emotions. It's comforting in a way, knowing there's someone grounded among us.

Just as I'm about to chime in, supporting Rhae's suggestion for a change, the ground beneath us gives a disconcerting rumble. My heart lurches into my throat as I hear the ominous sound of movement from above. I barely have time to shout a warning as the mountain discharges a deluge of massive jellybeans, cascading down the slope towards us.

"Watch out!" I cry, as I swing my Lollipop Wand with an urgency fueled by sheer terror. The air shimmers around us and the descending jellybeans morph mid-flight into marshmallows. Their softer, slower descent gives us a moment to react and prevents us from being swept off our feet.

“Anchor!” I shout, remembering the second line of the limerick. "Morlin, the limerick!"

Recognition flashes across his face. Quick as a shot, Morlin reshapes his Sugarshifter into a grappling hook made of hard candy. He buries it into the ground, and it expands, latching onto a large candy cane tree. It’s like watching a sailor in a storm, tying us to this one steady point in a sea of chaos.

He tugs at the line and motions for Rhae and me to hold on. We grasp it just in time, the marshmallows surging around us like a fluffy, sweet tide.

As the last of the avalanche rushes by, we’re left panting and drenched in marshmallow fluff. Looking at the mess around us, the reality of our situation starts to sink in. We’re in danger - real, life-threatening danger. Not the playful thrill of a video game, but the cold, hard reality of survival.

We huddle together, our exhilaration from surviving the avalanche quickly replaced by a sobering understanding. We need each other. We have to work together, using our unique abilities and cooperation, to get out of here alive.

“That was close,” Morlin murmurs, looking a little green around the edges.

“Too close,” Rhae agrees, her usual bravado momentarily subdued.

After a moment of silence, I clear my throat. “We should move on,” I suggest, "And keep in mind the hints from the limerick."

Morlin nods, staring up at the peak. “I can shape a safety line from my Sugarshifter. We should stick together. Rhae, can you lead? Your Rhino could help us keep the pace."

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

Rhae smirks, a spark of her usual confidence returning. "Lead the way? You bet. Just try to keep up."

With Rhae's words echoing in my ears, we get moving. She takes off, a determined look on her face, Sugar Rush Rhino lending her speed and agility. She races upwards, scaling the candy mountain like it's a playground climbing wall. Morlin and I follow her trail, connected by a line of spun-sugar twine, courtesy of Morlin's Sugarshifter.

As we start our ascent, I have to admit that this, this is wild. The rock candy under our feet is a dazzling spectrum of colours, like gemstones hewn from the earth's depths. They're beautiful, sure, but they're also incredibly hard and jagged. That’s where I come in.

I reach out, tentatively at first, with my Lollipop Wand. A soft pink glow emerges from the tip, illuminating the rock candy below. There's a moment's pause, then the candy softens, morphing from gemstone-hard to a kind of chewy consistency. It's like watching magic, only I'm the one doing it.

"Nice, Vosi!" Rhae calls down from above, her voice carrying over the wind that's whipping around us. "Keep it up!"

Even Morlin, usually so focused and serious, can't hide his impressed grin. "Good thinking, Vosi," he adds, his fingers digging into the candy handholds. "This should make the climb a lot easier."

We continue like that, Rhae and her Rhino making paths, Morlin securing our link, and me softening our footholds. The mountain throws a few curveballs our way – patches of unsteady ground, an occasional surprise slide of loose candy pebbles – but we handle them.

Each challenge is met with a burst of energy from Rhae's Rhino, a clever twist of Morlin's Sugarshifter, or a careful touch of my Lollipop Wand. And with each obstacle we conquer, I feel a growing sense of unity among us. It's like we're syncing up, starting to really understand how our gifts can work together.

By the time we finally clamber onto the summit of the candy mountain, I'm pretty much out of breath. Rhae seems unaffected, her ever-energetic Rhino bouncing happily beside her, while Morlin seems to be deep in thought, probably mulling over our next challenge.

"We did it," I pant, raising my hand for a high-five. Morlin's attention drifts back to us, and he complies with a soft smile. Rhae, grinning broadly, adds her hand to the mix, completing our first successful team high-five. A sweet victory. The unity I've been sensing, it's real and right now, it's tangible.

We take a moment to revel in our success, the taste of the shared triumph almost as sweet as the candy rocks beneath us. Morlin actually laughs, a rare occurrence, while Rhae starts an impromptu dance with her Rhino, their exuberance infectious. We may be in a game with high stakes and a ticking clock, but this moment, this celebration of our achievement, it's a breather we needed.

As the initial jubilation wanes, I find myself drawn to the view. From the summit, Cryptic Candy stretches out before us like a giant confectioner's dream. Our attention, though, is quickly drawn to a dense candy cane forest, its colorful swirls and patterns oddly intimidating in the warm glow of the setting sun.

"Well, that doesn't look ominous at all," Rhae quips, following my gaze.

Morlin, squinting at the forest, hums. "Seems like we're headed right into the belly of the beast."

"Or the belly of the candy cane beast," I add, a tinge of nervousness threading through my voice.

They chuckle at my addition, the levity lessening the edge of our anticipation. We know this is only the beginning, the second of five challenges conquered. But for now, we revel in our small victory.

Drawing ourselves back to the task at hand, I initiate the info display with a quick hand gesture, bringing up the limerick once again. The line, "Solve the hoot in the night," glows subtly in our field-of-view.

"What do you think it means?" Rhae asks, her brows furrowed in thought.

Morlin contemplates the words, his gaze distant. "Owls hoot. Maybe we're dealing with some kind of nocturnal puzzle or riddle?"

"Could be," I muse, my mind already churning with possibilities.

As we sit on the summit, brainstorming about the cryptic line, a certain thrill courses through me. This is what I've dreamed of. Even with the uncertainty and the ticking clock showing just 15 hours remaining, I wouldn't trade this moment for anything.

With the candy cane forest looming in the distance and the night slowly descending upon us, our second challenge is now behind us, and another one, riddled with new challenges and puzzles, is about to begin.
