As my body materializes, the first thing that hits me is the smell. I mean, it's like stepping into a bakery on steroids. The air is so thick with the scent of sugar and peppermint, I can almost taste it. It's a sensory overload and it takes a second for me to remember that this isn’t real. It's Cryptic Candy, Dorius Lab’s latest virtual spectacle, and it's the most insanely realistic VR I've ever experienced.
I stand in the middle of a forest, only it’s not your average forest. Trees of candy cane twist and curl towards a cotton candy sky, their branches adorned with sparkling gumdrops. The ground beneath me is covered in a hard green ribbon candy grass that crunches as I shift my weight.
“Wow...” I murmur, my voice mingling with the gentle, sugary breeze, “This is insane.”
My mind is racing with thoughts. It's all so surreal. I’ve been dreaming of this moment for as long as I can remember. From that first contest I watched as a kid, curled up on the couch, eyes glued to the screen, I knew I had to be a part of it.
It’s crazy to think I’m here now, chosen from millions of entries to be one of the first to experience Cryptic Candy. The stakes are as high as they come, with a $100 million prize money on the line and a 24-hour ticking clock before our consciousnesses risk being trapped in here. But right now, all of that feels secondary.
My eyes travel up a particularly tall candy cane tree, the stripes spiraling up to the dizzying heights, and I can't help but grin. This is it. The moment I've been waiting for. Fear and anticipation mingle in my stomach but, for now, I let the sheer awe of it all wash over me. It's not every day you stand in the heart of a candy forest, one of the main characters in a story I've been dreaming about for years.
Suddenly, a flash of light catches my eye. A little distance away, two figures flicker into existence like glitchy holograms. I watch, fascinated, as the flickering stabilizes and there they are—my fellow players.
"Hi," I shout, waving like a goofball. "I'm Vosi."
The taller figure, a lean guy with an air of silent intelligence, nods. "Morlin," he responds, his voice as crisp and direct as his introduction.
The other, a fiery-haired girl with an energy that seems to practically vibrate in the air around her, gives a quick wave. "Rhae." There’s a determined look on her face, and I see her eyes narrow as she sizes up the surroundings.
The reality of it all hits me then. These aren’t just characters. These are people—real, live people. And we are in this together.
I stride towards them, wiping my clammy hands on my pants. “Hey, Morlin. Rhae,” I say, the names tasting strange in the sweet, candy-scented air of Cryptic Candy. We exchange a round of nods, a silent agreement passing between us. We all know what’s at stake.
Rhae rubs her hands together, her gaze flitting around our vibrant surroundings. Morlin, on the other hand, seems deep in thought. The tension is thick enough to cut with a candy knife. But we don’t have time to dwell on that.
I clear my throat. “We should, uh, probably get started on the first challenge, right? Not a lot of time for sightseeing, as beautiful as the sights might be.”
Before anyone can respond, a bright flash materializes in front of each of us. I blink away the spots in my vision, and my breath catches in my throat. There, floating before me, is a Lollipop Wand. I reach out hesitantly, the cool, candy-coated handle solidifying under my touch. I quickly activate my info display and an overview of my gift pops up. "It's... it's a Lollipop Wand. It can alter the properties of stuff in here," I tell them, wonder lacing my words.
Rhae and Morlin, similarly, find themselves with gifts of their own. Rhae is beaming, a large Candy Rhino materializing at her side. "My Rhino, it can jump over obstacles and move at high speeds," she says, reaching out to pat its shimmering candy hide. Morlin, with a look of awe, lifts up his gift, a large peppermint candy cane called a Sugarshifter. "It can shape-shift into whatever object I can imagine," he tells us, testing its weight in his hand.
"We should probably get moving," I suggest, even as my fingers trace the swirls on my wand nervously. I'm no stranger to fear - the fear of not being good enough, of failing - and it's beginning to creep up on me. The excitement is still there, bubbling underneath, but the reality of the challenge ahead tempers it.
"Lets check out the limerick," Morlin says. His voice is calm, grounding. Like the voice of reason in all this craziness.
I nod, pulling myself together. "Right." I flex my hand, fingers stretching wide, then closing to a fist, activating the info display in our shared field-of-view. The limerick appears, floating before us in colorful, holographic letters.
Together, we read:
"In the maze where the chocolate mud binds, Ascend where the jellybean finds, Solve the hoot in the night, Cross the fizzing sprite, And the castle to your will aligns."
Despite my nerves, I can't help but feel a tingle of excitement. This is it. This is the part I love. Unraveling the meaning behind each line, cracking the code. It's why I've been a fan of these contests for years.
"We should focus on the first line," I say, looking at Rhae and Morlin. "That's our clue for the first challenge."
Morlin, who's been silent, suddenly gestures to bring up his map. I do the same and notice an area where a pattern of winding lines twist and turn on itself.
"It looks like a maze," Morlin suggests. "And it's made of chocolate mud, according to the limerick."
"But is the mud... binding?" Rhae chimes in, raising an eyebrow.
"That's what we need to find out." Morlin replies, his voice holding a hint of a challenge. Well, that's the vibe I’m getting from Morlin - analytical, pragmatic, always ready to tackle a problem head-on.
"Well, what are we waiting for then?" Rhae exclaims as she hops on the back of her Sugar Rush Rhino, its sugary armor gleaming under the bright candy sun. "Let's go see this Chocolate Mud Maze for ourselves!"
But I hesitate, tugging at my lower lip with my teeth. It's not that I'm scared, but... well, okay, maybe I am a little scared. We've got a lot riding on this. Like, a hundred-million-dollar lot. And the thought of getting lost in some VR world forever? Yeah, no thank you.
"Wait, wait, Rhae," I interject before she's able to urge her Rhino into action. "Let's... let's take a moment to strategize. This isn't some run-of-the-mill game. It's real. The stakes are real."

Rhae rolls her eyes, but she holds off on her impulsive charge. "Sure, Vos. You and Morlin take your sweet time planning. Me and Big Sugar here," she pats her Rhino affectionately, "will be waiting when you're done."
I can tell Morlin appreciates the pause, though. He's similar to me in that regard. We're thinkers, analyzers. We like to be prepared. As Rhae lounges on her Rhino, Morlin and I lean into the first line of the limerick.
"In the maze where the chocolate mud binds," Morlin reads out loud, his gaze pensive.
"Maybe it's literal," I muse, "The chocolate mud binds, or traps, anyone who enters the maze. We should consider how our gifts could affect or manipulate the mud."
Rhae snorts from atop her Rhino. "I mean, why don't we actually go there and find out? This overthinking won't help if we haven't even seen the place."
To my surprise, her words make sense. We've got time, sure, but it doesn't mean we should waste it overthinking every single step. "Okay, Rhae," I concede. "Let's head towards the maze while Morlin and I strategize."
As we set off in the direction of the maze, I can't help but think about the magic that lies at the end of my Lollipop Wand. I know I'll have to use it to solve the puzzle of the chocolate mud, but how?
"Guys," I speak up, breaking the silence that has fallen upon us. "We should maybe practice a bit with our gifts before we face the maze, don't you think?"
Morlin looks thoughtful for a moment, then nods. "That's a good idea, Vosi."
Rhae just shrugs. "Might as well."
We each step away from the group, focusing on the items in our hands. My Lollipop Wand feels cool and weighty. It's comfortable, almost familiar. Swirling the wand around a bit, I manage to transform a clump of soft gumdrop mushrooms into hard peppermint pebbles.
"Well, that's new," I mutter to myself, surprised by my sudden ability to transfigure things.
Turning around, I see Morlin, brow furrowed in concentration, as he morphs his Sugarshifter from one form to another, his face lighting up in amazement. And there's Rhae, with her Sugar Rush Rhino. She tosses a piece of rock candy to the rhino, who snaps it up eagerly. The rhino suddenly vibrates, glowing brightly and shooting off a few feet at an impressive speed. It then slows down, turning back to look at Rhae expectantly.
We all share an understanding nod, a silent agreement that we're as ready as we'll ever be.
As we approach the entrance to the maze, the smell of cocoa fills the air, sweet and slightly bitter. The walls of the maze rise high above us, built of sticky, shifting chocolate mud. I can see them pulsating, shifting in unpredictable patterns. It's mesmerizing but terrifying.
A lump forms in my thoat as I watch a group of gingerbread hikers step into the maze, only to get swallowed up by the mud. The fear is palpable; it wraps around my heart like a vise.
I glance at Morlin and Rhae. They look as terrified as I feel. But we have no choice. We're in it together. We either solve this maze, or... well, I don't want to think about the or.
I take a deep breath, gripping my Lollipop Wand tighter. "Let's do this," I whisper more to myself than to them.
Tentatively, I reach out, pointing the tip of my wand toward the muddy ground in front of us. A ripple of magic pulses from it, and for a second, nothing happens. Then, the mud begins to solidify, forming a stable path leading into the heart of the maze. Next, I harden the walls around us and release a breath I didn't realize I was holding. The fear lessens a bit, replaced by a glimmer of hope.
"All right," I say, my voice stronger. "Let's go."
We start forward, navigating the winding, unpredictable paths of the maze. I keep one hand on the wall, my wand held steady to maintain the magic, making the unpredictable chocolate mud a solidified cocoa wall. The path twists and turns and doubles back on itself, a confusing, disorientating journey.
Rhae is at the front, her Sugar Rush Rhino plowing ahead. She’s all action, driven by a restless energy that refuses to stand still. Morlin is in the middle, brow furrowed, constantly analyzing and overthinking our every step. I bring up the rear, trying my best to stay focused, my magic wand pulsing in tune with my nervousness.
A few times, the path ahead abruptly crumbles into liquid mud, Rhae's hasty decisions causing more harm than good. "Damn it!" she curses, frustrated. We have to backtrack, find a new path, and I can see Morlin's lips moving silently as he contemplates the maze's shifting pattern. But he hesitates too long, unable to commit to a route, wasting precious minutes. As for me, every time the maze shifts, my self-doubt resurfaces, making me question whether I can maintain the spell.
The maze of chocolate is massive. But we keep going, keep pushing, communicating more effectively as the hours pass. A nod here, a hand signal there, a shouted warning, a word of encouragement. We stumble, we fall, but we also pick each other up. And somehow, through this teamwork, through this collective will to survive and succeed, we make it.
We finally step out of the maze into a small, open clearing. The chocolate mud walls softening behind us. I let out a shaky breath, my body exhausted from exertion.
Morlin breaks into a relieved grin. “We made it!”
Rhae whoops, pumping her fist into the air, her previous frustrations forgotten in the face of victory. I find myself laughing, the sound bubbling out from pure, unfiltered relief. The three of us meet in the center of the clearing for a group high-five, our joy palpable.
But our celebration is short-lived. My heart sinks as I catch sight of what awaits us next. Towering in the distance is a range of mountains, their peaks glistening in the artificial sunlight. Their surfaces shimmer in myriad colors, unmistakably the jagged crystalline formations of rock candy.
We exchange looks, the same thought in all our minds. The second line of the limerick rings in my ears - "Ascend where the jellybean finds."
I swallow hard. This is no time for respite. The next challenge looms ahead, a seemingly insurmountable task. But we've overcome the first hurdle. We've learned, we've adapted, we've grown. And together, we can face what comes next.
"Ready for a climb?" Rhae asks, her voice full of determination.
I look at Morlin, then back at Rhae, and nod. "Ready as we'll ever be."
