Nearly a quarter of the innovations used in the first rocket constructed came about as a result of that project. In the year 1950, the first rocket carrying a satellite into orbit was launched. It was a joint project between the Americans and the British. The Russians launched three separate rockets, each more desperate than the last in rapid succession after this provocation.

None of them made it out of the atmosphere due to problems in their construction.
