Divergence Eight

The space race took off, and then quickly reached a standstill as humanity realized there was a larger problem ahead of them. Living in space was hard. Working in space was even harder, and funding all of these projects was incredibly expensive.

Eventually, they realized that in space there were no borders. The only lines drawn up there were the ones they created. Plans for an International Space Station began to be drawn up. It was small, at first. However, its modularity meant that it could be added to as time went on.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

In a rare show of participation, each country took part in the planning of the station. All the details were covered from the initial station design to how the modules would be connected.

The first module began construction in 1963 and was launched in 1966. With others following shortly thereafter.

By the year 1971, the International Space Station comprised nineteen modules. The first circle had been completed, and a second was in progress. The connecting barrel was comprised of one of their earlier rockets that had been repurposed.

With all the progress that they had been making on the station, the world gradually turned its attention to the moon.
