Chapter 3

Screee!!! Valerius woke up abruptly to a loud, extremely annoying screeching sound. Valerius rubbed his eyes and quickly scanned the surrounding area for any potential threats. He immediately noticed that something was off. Right next to the tree was a bush that looked quite suspicious with antennae poking out of it. Wait... there aren't any more, are there? He continued surveying the area, finding more than a few suspicious plants. All in all, he counted around 15 suspicious plants. He drew his bow back and fired at one of the suspicious plants, which he dubbed, uncreatively, Aniplants, as he assumed them to be animals. But when the arrow was right about to hit the plant, it dodged and transformed into... nothing? Valerius looked all around but couldn't see anything. The other suspicious plants had disappeared as well. He was about to return to his wagon when, suddenly, an attack came out of nowhere. An arrow whipped by his ear and plunged into something invisible. "Huh?" Valerius stepped back as he saw a giant, translucent bear-like creature collapse right next to him. More arrows followed, each hitting an invisible target that turned out to be a giant, translucent bear-like creature, just like the first.

Valerius looked up to the source of the arrows: A person sitting in a tree casually sipping a substance. "Looked like you needed some help, so I took care of the Nilae for you." Valerius blushed, as once he saw the first dead "Nilae", he was calling them Invisibears in his head. "Name's Aumzale, professional archer in the special division of Jrinski, and I am the number one in the squad!"

"O-kay?" Valerius raised an eyebrow.

"Fool, respect me, I could've let you die or I could put an arrow through your neck right now!" Aumzale barked, "You should respect me, and call me sir!"

"Yes, sir! Would you like me to rub your feet, or clean your fingernails for you?" Valerius remarked scornfully, "You don't deserve my respect! You just put some arrows through the Nilae and you expect to be hailed a hero?" Valerius immediately shut his mouth after that, realizing that, very likely, Aumzale would just puncture his neck with an arrow. "Wait, I-

Aumzale was silent. Valerious cut himself off and prepared himself for inevitable doom. But then, something strange happened. Aumzale started laughing! "I like you, kid! You seem to have a fiery spirit that can be fanned to reach new blazing levels. But for that to happen, you can't continue with your current skill level. You'll need to train. And I can do that for you. Do you accept?"

"Wait, what?" Valerius was silent, pretending to contemplate his answer, "Of course! I accept!"

"Alright, you can retire to your wagon for now. But be in that clearing by sunup, or else!" Aumzale ordered, and then Aumzale seemed to disappear, leaving behind a puff of smoke.

"Well that was interesting!" Valerius muttered, standing still as he thought of what happened.

"I said go to your wagon!" Aumzale's voice boomed from an unknown spot, and Valerius sighed.

"Okay!" He shouted back, and lay on his makeshift bed in his wagon and contemplated life.
