Chapter 1: Where am I?

Chapter 1: Where am I?

A six-year-old girl found herself lying on a plain mattress on the floor. When she opened her eyes, she quickly realised that she did not recognise the ceiling she was staring at.

In a panic, she sat up abruptly and looked around at her surroundings for clues as to where she was. From her brief observations, she realised that she seemed to be in an orphanage of sorts. The many other children sleeping soundly on the floor and on the wooden bunk beds seem to indicate so. She then stared at her hands which were far smaller than she remembered.

" Wher-" As she spoke, she also realised that her voice was different. Speaking the word "where" seemed to require much more effort than she could remember, as if her mouth was not used to making such sounds. Without hesitation, the girl stood up and made her way to the room's door which she assumed was the exit. However, just as she got close enough to attempt to open the door, the door opened on its own swinging inwards and bumping the girl on the forehead. Losing her balance, the girl fell on her bum.

Though she wasn't hit very hard, the girl got a splitting headache. It hurt so much that she fell on her side and curled into a foetal position. Flashes of memories of another person's life flooded into the poor girl's mind as her memories, her past life's memories, were suppressed and tucked away.

"-AY! Ray!" She heard a man yelling.

' Yes... my name is Ray...' The litt- Ray, thought to herself.

The headache subsided as Ray cleared her head. Through her tears, she spotted an old man. It was this old man who was taking care of the orphanage.

" Gran- *sniff* Grandpa John?" She said in a small voice.

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

" I'm here Ray!" She stayed still as a wrinkled hand moved to support the back of her head. Another hand gently removed her much smaller hands from her forehead.

" Does it still hurt?" He said with a tone that implied he was concerned. Then, he picked up the trembling girl and laid her on her mattress.

" Little Ray, wait for me here. I will bring the healing salve." Not waiting for the girl's response, he hurried off.

' I am Ray... I was Jessica? In a past life? I am 6 years old... I was 19 years old? I was a university student? There are no universities on Krashu at least... Ah, this world's name is Krashu. My previous world was called... Earth? What a stupid name for a planet. Who thought to call their home planet dirt?! Krashu in the common language means home. It is now my home too I guess.' Ray thought.

As she sifted through the memories of her past, Grandpa John returned. When he saw the expression on Ray's face, he immediately connected the dots and smiled bitterly. He had seen that strange expression before.

He slowly knelt down to Ray's side. Taking a bit of the healing salve from the tin container he held, he propped up Ray's head with a hand and spread some of it on her forehead. The quickly forming bruise faded nearly immediately, leaving unblemished skin.

" Ray, did you regain memories of a past life or two?" He asked the girl gently. Ray visibly flinched and seemed to panic internally at his question.

" Don't worry Ray... having memories of past lives is rare but it isn't unusual. Maybe you can speak a little about your past lives? It is supposed to help a reincarnated person sort through their memories." The old man urged Ray as he had other children who had displayed the "reincarnation symptoms" before her.

" I... um was a university student and I-" Though the old man had no idea what a "University" was he nodded along as Ray spoke.

" Ah, I was from the planet Earth! Do you know about it?" Asked Ray.

" Earth? Yes, I know that one... about half of the people who remember their past lives come from Earth." Hearing this, Ray's mouth dropped.

" So I am not special?" She asked sheepishly. This caused her caretaker to laugh. His sudden outburst in turn awoke several of the children that were sleeping.

After giving the pouting Ray a few pats on the head, he got up and woke the rest of the children in the room and left to wake the rest of the children in the orphanage.

' He didn't even answer my question...' Ray however continued pouting as she tried to recall anything from her past life that would make her special. She pouted and frowned even harder when she realised that her past self wasn't anything special either.

' I will be more in this life... I will be special!' She thought, semi-vowing to herself.

As she made it to the already open door, she saw a little white butterfly land on the window next to the door. It struck her how much it looked like it was made of paper as she passed it, though she quickly forgot about the creature and went on to live life as usual.
