The first week of my epic climb was sadly slow. We only got to the second-floor boss in a week, and this was mainly because I was training my party in the way of qi cultivation and the Guardian System. That's what we climbers call the levelling system of the tower, the guardian system seemed basic on the surface kill creatures, level up, spend attributes, and gain skills, but with all things, there were hidden depths to it. I recall one particular lesson I gave my group of newbies as we sat around the campsite on floor [2-7] . It was about attribute assignment I wasn't shocked to learn that they had been what gamers would call min-maxing, dumping attributes into their most used stats and ignoring the others; Gibil had a very high dexterity but low in pretty much everything else, while Lucas had pretty much put every attribute point he gained into strength.
This was fine for the early floors because most creatures didn't have much health or armour, but on higher floors, Gibil would find even though he could hit a target, he wouldn't be able to pierce their armour, or Lucas wouldn't be able to hit the more agile targets.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
A lot of people did this in the early days only to have to use gear and items to shore up their weaknesses later instead of enhancing their strengths. so I had to bring out lecture mode and go in a rant about attributes and what they actually did.
most people knew about the basics that strength raised one's physical Dexterity, increased one's flexibility and agility; constitution raised health; intelligence mana; and charisma increased one's mana regen.
but there were more than the attributes did.
Strength not only increased one's physical prowess but also increased the density of their muscles and strengthened their bones, making them more durable like natural armour.
Dexterity changed one's tendinitis and twitch reflex, allowing them to move their limbs faster and flex their ability. also, it increases one's perception allowing them to pick out other details.
Constitution increased one's health stat, but it strengthened the immune system and organs, which allowed one to process high-level beast meat, and for a cultivator, it allowed them to extract more qi from it.
Intelligence increases one's mana pool but also their ability to process information, It won't make someone smarter, but it will allow them to retain knowledge easier. it also allows someone to focus on their mind easier allowing someone to enter meditation.
Charisma is a funnier one; it should be called spirit, but that's just my opinion; it increases one's mana regeneration, but it also connects the body and soul more closely; at these low levels, there are few physical changes, but once you start getting into the hundreds of points, people started to change. it seemed to change one's physical appearance based on their personality or true self; they ranged from a more charming smile or resting bitch face. but if one believed with the whole self that the sun shined out their ass, their body would reflect that like Alistar. this connection to body and soul allowed one to gather and control qi more effectively in the body.
I was interrupted at that point by a Komodo dragon attacking the ringer barrier. but this wasn't any normal Komodo; it was about twice as big, and its saliva could melt non-tower steel. some industrious person decided that it would make a good etching acid and was paying good money for it, so there was a lucrative hunting system going on for them. making the second floors pretty desolate of the beast.
but back to the present, I was standing at front of the boss's door made of sandstone and with an [2-x] engraved on it and a lot of symbols in the tower script, which was a form of alien pictographs; some scholars were trying to work out what they meant at the moment and they would eventually, but the boss doors basically described what was the fight like. the more important scriptures wouldn't be found till the 30th floor.
Komodo Dragon Rex, that's what this boss was called, and it sounds as bad as it is. a big ass Komodo dragon that stood on his hind legs stomped around and tried to eat you. all while you were dealing with the sweltering heat of lava and the noxious gas. fun times.
before the door was a vendor who had set up to sell gas masks, I paid for my team to each have one. it was only the boss fight that had an active volcano. The rest of the floor was desert-like outback Australia, hot and rocky. Lizards were the main beast of the floor monitor lizards to be more accurate.
"Okay, guys, it was a slow week, but we are going to kill Rexy and make it to floor [3-x] by nightfall; after that, we will drop down to [3-8] and grind and kill another mini-boss", I explained the battle plan. "okay Rexy is slow but tough, he has a huge health pool and harden bones so crits will be harder. there is a spot on the back of the head where there is no bone it's marked with a spot of white scales; that is a weak point, but reaching it is difficult." I continued, "That will be your job Gibil"
"got it," he said a little worriedly.
"Thomas, Lucas, watch out for its tail it does a sweep attack that can knock you into the lava if you are not careful" Turning to them, I said, "Julia, keep everyone healed up and stay 10 meters back. That will keep you clear of the tail" looking at her. "and lastly keep your masks on, the gas is pretty poisonous and can melt your lungs, especially those with the lower constitution"
looking over my party, I nodded time to get this going.
