Chapter 56: Delegation

Chapter 56: Delegation

As Deo closed the door behind Lena, he set the potion aside and turned his full attention to her. The brusqueness of her entrance suggested that this was more than just a casual visit. Lena opened her ledger, revealing pages filled with neat rows of figures and calculations. Her expression was focused, indicative of the careful planning and forethought she had put into whatever she was about to discuss.

"So, this is what you've been secretly working on?" Deo asked, a hint of surprise in his voice. He had known Lena to be methodical and thorough, but the detailed work in the ledger was beyond what he had expected.

Lena swept some of her greying hair out of her eyes and fixed Deo with a serious look, nodding slightly. "Yes, I've been running the numbers, looking at our resources and projections. It's crucial for what comes next," she said, her tone as earnest as her expression. "Based on the current growth rates and yields, I estimate we have maybe one more harvest after the one coming up in a week or so before winter sets in. We need to maximize our yield before the cold weather hits."

She looked up from her ledger, her gaze steady. "And there's more. It's become clear that we shouldn't waste your talents on tasks like harvesting. Your time is better spent focusing on growing the plants, enhancing their qualities. We should get more hands from around the hamlet, or elsewhere, for the harvesting work. It's a more efficient use of resources and your abilities."

Lena traced a line of figures with her finger as she continued, "To achieve this, we need to maximize the time you spend in the fields. My estimates show that we'll need you to complete the growth of the Iron Thicket during the upcoming harvest, as that's our immediate priority. Once that's done, you can focus on one final push for growth, allowing us one more set of crops before winter. It’s a tight schedule, but with efficient management of your time, it’s achievable."

Deo nodded, understanding the plan but then asked, "Ok, and where are we going to find the extra hands for managing the harvest?"

Lena's fingers drummed thoughtfully on the side of her ledger as she pondered Deo's question. After a moment, she spoke up. "We could consider asking the dwarves, but they are deeply involved in their mining and crafting projects. It wouldn't be wise to pull them away from such important work."

After a brief pause, she continued, her tone turning slightly hesitant. "I hope I haven't overstepped, but I've actually already reached out to Serin, the halfling merchant. We might be able to hire a couple of halflings from Willowdale to assist us. They have a good reputation in agricultural work and could be very helpful. Would that be alright with you?"

At this, Deo's expression brightened. "That's an excellent initiative, Lena," he replied enthusiastically. "Bringing in halflings from Willowdale could be just what we need. The extra hands to help out will be invaluable. I'm impressed you've already taken this step.”

He then pondered a moment before continuing, "You know, this makes me think. Maybe we should formalize your role a bit more, or perhaps delegate some of the responsibilities of the territory to you. You have a keen sense of what's needed and the foresight to act on it. I wonder if that’s something I can do with the System?”

Without waiting to hear back, he eagerly dived into the system interface:

Deo scrolled through the list of roles within the territory system, his eyes widening in amazement at the breadth of what he could do. As he expanded each option to read more about them, he began to contemplate which role would be best suited for Lena. Some, like Chief Mage and Militia Commander, were clearly ill-suited for her skills and interests. However, others seemed like a perfect match for her abilities and passions.

He lingered on the description of the Quartermaster. As a head cook, Lena already had extensive experience in managing supplies and ensuring efficient use of resources. Her knack for organization and meticulous planning could translate seamlessly into this role, making her an ideal candidate to oversee the territory's supplies and equipment. Another role that caught his eye was the Head of Diplomatic Relations. Lena had shown a natural aptitude for communication and negotiation, skills essential for managing external relations and diplomacy. Her ability to engage effectively with others and her understanding of the broader picture made her a strong contender for this position too.

Deo weighed his options, considering Lena's strengths and the needs of their territory. After a moment of thoughtful deliberation, he made his choice, selecting the role he felt would best leverage Lena's abilities and contribute most significantly to the territory's success.

[Warning: You may only select 1 village role at this time. Expand your territory to be eligible for more. Do you wish to proceed?]

This limitation made Deo pause. It underscored the importance of his decision, reminding him of the strategic significance of each role within the territory. Still, who better to use it on, but the very first person he had invited to settle in Harmony’s Refuge. It wasn’t like he’d seen a choice for a Hellhound Champion within the extensive list of options. He nodded to himself, satisfied with his choice, and confirmed his choice in the system.

As soon as Deo confirmed his choice in the system, a prompt appeared before Lena:

[Deo Mitchell wishes to appoint you as the Steward of Harmony's Refuge. Do you accept?]

Lena's eyes briefly glazed over as she selected an underlying option to delve into the information about the Steward role, absorbing the details and responsibilities that came with it. After a few moments, she looked up, her gaze meeting Deo's.

"Are you sure about this, Deo?" she asked, a hint of uncertainty in her voice.

"Absolutely," Deo replied with confidence. "You're the perfect person for this role. You've already been doing so much for Harmony's Refuge; it's time your role reflected that."

Her face lit up with resolve and gratitude, and without hesitation, she replied, "I would love to do it," and accepted the prompt.

As soon as she confirmed her acceptance, Lena let out a small, uncharacteristic squeak of excitement. At Deo's raised eyebrows, she quickly explained, her voice tinged with surprise and delight, "Oh, I just got a title. I never get titles!"

Lena's eyes narrowed slightly in confusion after her initial excitement, clearly reading through the details of her new title and role. "Oh, the system does like to exaggerate, doesn't it?" she said with a chuckle. "It gave me the title for being trusted by a 'legendary Green Mage.'" Her words were lighthearted, but there was a hint of teasing in her tone. “I know you’re great and all, but legendary is quite the embellishment!”

Deo's cheeks turned a slight shade of red at her comment, as he coughed non-committally and turned away. Fortunately, before the moment could linger, Lena swiftly changed the subject. She peered around at the potion-making apparatus and the remnants of the explosive mishap that had stained parts of the room. "So, what exactly have you been up to with your time, Deo?" she asked, her curiosity piqued by the chaotic state of his workspace.

Deo, relieved to steer away from the previous topic, eagerly began sharing his latest newfound passion. "I've dived into the world of potion-making," he explained with a hint of pride in his voice. Walking over to the table, he picked up the vial containing his very first successful mana potion. "It's been quite a journey, with a few... unexpected turns," he added, gesturing towards the stained areas.

Holding up the vial, he continued, "But here, I managed to make this – my first mana potion!" He held it out to her with a proud smile. "Here you go, feel free to take it, Steward!"

Lena looked at the offered potion, a mix of appreciation and amusement in her eyes. "Err, Deo, thanks, but I'm not a mage. I don't use mana," she gently declined.

Deo's face registered surprise. "Oh, I thought everyone did!"

"Nah, my skills work a bit differently; they just have cooldowns rather than requiring mana," Lena explained with a small smile.

As Deo and Lena passed the mana potion back and forth, Pyro sauntered into the room. The hellhound approached Lena with a curious demeanour, as if sensing that changes had occurred whilst he had been napped. Pyro walked up to Lena and gave her a friendly sniff, followed by a gentle nudge with his snout. Lena responded with a warm smile and a pat on his head, which Pyro seemed to appreciate.

After a moment of interaction with Pyro, Lena turned back to Deo, her expression shifting to one of determination. "Alright, now that I've officially taken on the role of Steward, it's time I got to work. I'll message Serin right away and start arranging for those extra hands from Willowdale. We need to get everything in place for the upcoming harvest." She then turned to Deo with a slightly stern, yet playful tone, "Now you get back to work and cultivate these plants! Remember, we need them done by the end of the week.”

Deo nodded, understanding the urgency and importance of her next steps. "Thanks, Lena. I really appreciate you taking charge of this. It's going to make a huge difference for us."

With a final nod and a purposeful stride, Lena excused herself from the room, ready to take on her new responsibilities as Steward. As she left, Deo couldn't help but feel a sense of relief and optimism. With Lena managing these crucial aspects of the territory, he could focus more on his magical and alchemical endeavours, confident in the knowledge that the day-to-day running of Harmony's Refuge was in capable hands.

The week continued much in the same vein as it had started. Deo dedicated himself to the growth of the flora, employing his Verdant Growth ability to nurture and enhance the plants. The greenery around Harmony's Refuge flourished under his attentive care.

Simultaneously, Deo continued his foray into the realm of alchemy. His experiments and learning bore fruit as he successfully crafted five more basic mana potions. Each potion, while a small achievement in itself, served as a stepping stone in his alchemical journey. His persistence and dedication to mastering the craft led to a notable breakthrough: the formulation of a simple mana potion. This new concoction restored a significantly greater amount of mana than the basic versions, yet it was still relatively modest considering his burgeoning mana reserves. Nevertheless, it marked a significant improvement in his potion-making skills, fuelling his ambition to create even more potent elixirs.

The culmination of his efforts coincided with a major milestone for the village. On the day just before the scheduled harvest, the Iron Thicket, which Deo had been so diligently nurturing, reached full maturity. Towering at an impressive height of 10 feet, it stood as a natural barrier, providing robust protection to the village. Its dense foliage and sturdy branches formed a formidable shield, a living wall that protected the safety and sanctity of Harmony's Refuge.
