Chapter 52: From Hearth to Hills

Chapter 52: From Hearth to Hills

Deo awoke to the sensation of Pyro nuzzling his face, the hellhound's tail wagging furiously in relief. Through their deep bond, a rush of emotions flooded him - a mix of Pyro's worry, affection, and a gentle reprimand for his recklessness. As Deo's eyes fluttered open, he saw a cluster of worried faces hovering over him. The familiar surroundings slowly came into focus – he was in his own bed, in his house within Harmony’s Refuge.

Lena, her face etched with concern, leaned in closer. "Are you okay?" she asked, her voice tinged with relief and worry.

Deo managed a weak smile, feeling the lingering effects of mana depletion. "I’m absolutely fine, just used too much mana," he replied, trying to reassure his friends. His voice was hoarse, but he made an effort to sound upbeat, not wanting to add to their worry. As he spoke, he could feel the last remnants of fatigue clinging to him, a reminder of the toll his actions had taken.

As Deo began to gather his thoughts, a sudden, increasingly loud chime thundered through his mind, jarring him further into consciousness. Blinking to clear his vision, he noticed a quest update notification swirling in his field of view:

Looking up, Deo caught Braldin's eye and mentioned, "Oh, I see you've finished the blacksmith."

Braldin's face brightened at the mention. "Yeah, we did. Wanna come have a look? Think you're up to it?" His tone hopeful yet laced with concern for Deo's wellbeing.

Deo nodded, pushing himself up slightly. "Sure," he replied, his voice steadier now. The prospect of seeing the fruits of their labour, the tangible results of their hard work, was a welcome distraction from his recent ordeal. He swung his legs off the bed, steadying himself for a moment before standing, determined to regain his strength and see the progress they had made.

Braldin, seeing Deo's determination, offered a supportive arm as they made their way out of the house. Together, they walked slowly, with Pyro trailing close behind, towards the newly constructed forge. The structure, standing modestly yet proudly among the other buildings of Harmony’s Refuge, was a new addition to the landscape.

As they approached, the outside of the forge revealed its hastily assembled nature. The building was primarily composed of roughly hewn stone and timber, giving it a rugged, utilitarian appearance. Smoke gently wafted from a simple, functional chimney, indicative of the forge's active use. The door, made of sturdy wood, was open, inviting them into the space where the vital craft of blacksmithing would come to life. "Freya and Hilda really put their backs into this," Braldin remarked as they entered. "Without them, we'd still be laying the foundation."

The forge, though rudimentary, had all the essentials of a traditional blacksmith's workspace. At its heart was a modestly sized, but well-built hearth, its flames flickering steadily, providing the necessary heat for forging. The anvil, set a short distance from the fire, was robust and solid, its surface scarred with the marks of recent use. Beside it lay a collection of blacksmithing tools – hammers of various sizes and weights, tongs of differing lengths, and chisels, all arranged in a practical and accessible manner.

Around the forge were other essential elements – a barrel of water for quenching heated metal, a sturdy workbench cluttered with metal scraps and tools, and a rack holding raw materials like iron bars and coal. Each item in the forge, while not ornate, was functional and spoke of the practicality for which it had been set up.

"This might not be a grand forge of the old tales," Braldin said, gesturing around, "but it's ours, built with our hands and determination. It'll serve us well." His voice held a note of pride, acknowledging the hard work and collaboration that had gone into erecting this fundamental structure in such a short time.

After showing Deo the main area of the forge, Braldin led him into the adjoining workshop. This section, Braldin explained to Deo, was reserved for more delicate craftsmanship, focusing on jewelcrafting. As they stepped inside, they found Kiera already there, meticulously arranging a set of jewelcrafting tools.

The workshop, while smaller than the forge, was neatly organized. On one wall, a few shelves sparsely held a couple of raw gemstones, their scarcity highlighting the nascent stage of the jewelcrafting venture here. A sturdy table in the centre of the room held jeweller’s loupes, files, and an array of fine-tipped tools laid out, each with a specific purpose for cutting, shaping, and setting precious stones. In a corner, a compact jeweller’s bench was equipped with a vice, small hammers, mallets, and a magnifying glass on an adjustable arm for detailed crafting.

Kiera, with a focus that reflected her expertise, greeted them without looking up from her task. "Just getting things in order here," she said, her hands deftly sorting through a tray of various-sized chisels and tweezers.

Braldin watched her for a moment before turning to Deo. "Kiera's still honing her craft, but she’s got a natural talent for it," he said, his voice carrying a note of pride. His praise brought a shy smile to Kiera’s face as she continued her work.

Deo surveyed the workshop, absorbing the sight of the tools and the few gemstones. "I can't wait to see what you two can produce with all this," he remarked, his voice filled with genuine admiration. The workshop, though in its early stages, held a promise of creativity and craftsmanship that was palpable in the organized array of tools and materials.

After spending a few more moments observing Kiera's meticulous work, Deo and Braldin stepped out of the warmth of the workshop and forge. They were immediately greeted by the cool evening breeze of Harmony’s Refuge, the crisp air a refreshing change from the heat of the forge. As they walked, Deo turned to Braldin. "Where have Freya and Hilda gone? I'd like to thank them and congratulate them on their hard work," he inquired, wanting to acknowledge the efforts of those who had contributed to the forge and workshop.

Braldin nodded, understanding the sentiment. "They've gone off prospecting for ore," he explained. "With the forge up and running, we're in need of more raw materials. They're seeing what they can find nearby."

He then looked at Deo thoughtfully. "If they don't have any luck, do you think you could help them out tomorrow? Your skills might come in handy."

Deo didn't hesitate. "Sure," he replied. "I'd be happy to help. Finding the right materials will be crucial for you to reach your full potential."

As they continued their stroll through the hamlet, Deo felt the lingering effects of his earlier exertion. He knew he needed to rest and recover from the drain on his mana. "I think I need to head back and rest now, still feeling quite exhausted from the mana depletion," he said to Braldin. "But I'll be ready to help out tomorrow."

Braldin gave a nod of understanding. "Rest up, Deo. We need you at your best," he responded, clapping Deo gently on the shoulder. "Take care of yourself. I'll let Caelum know you're okay; he was worried about you."

With a grateful smile, Deo bid farewell to Braldin and turned towards his house. Pyro followed closely, his presence both comforting and protective. Deo could sense the hellhound's maternal attentiveness, akin to a vigilant nanny ensuring his charge avoided any further trouble. The cool evening breeze was a soothing companion as Deo made his way home, each step a reminder of the day's exhaustion.

Upon entering the quiet of his home, Pyro gently shepherded Deo toward the bedroom with subtle yet assertive nudges of his body. Grateful for the guidance, Deo sank into his bed, his body surrendering to the overwhelming need for rest. Pyro settled down nearby, his steady breathing and watchful demeanour forming a reassuring presence in the room. As Deo closed his eyes, the day's fatigue quickly carried him into a peaceful sleep, comforted by the knowledge that Pyro was there, faithfully keeping watch.

The morning sun streamed through the window as Deo awoke, feeling completely refreshed after a long, restorative sleep. He stretched, the previous day's fatigue now just a memory. After a hearty breakfast that further lifted his spirits, Deo stepped outside with Pyro moving faithfully by his side. The sun was already casting its warm glow over Harmony’s Refuge, bathing the settlement in a tranquil light and the fresh morning air was invigorating. As Deo made his way through the settlement, Caelum caught sight of them and quickly approached, his face breaking into a smile of relief and joy. "Good to see you're okay, Master Deo!" he said enthusiastically. Then, with a hint of uncertainty, he added, "Braldin said you were going pro... spect... ting?" He enunciated each syllable carefully, clearly unfamiliar with the word but eager to get it right.

Deo chuckled softly at Caelum's earnest attempt at the word. "Yep, that's the plan. Want to join in?" he asked, his tone encouraging.

Caelum's eyes lit up. "Sure!" he responded eagerly, thrilled at the prospect of accompanying Deo.

With Caelum now part of their small group, Deo, Pyro, and Caelum set off to find Braldin. The day promised new experiences, and Deo felt a sense of communal spirit as they made their way through the peaceful streets, each step leading them toward their shared adventure.

Deo, Pyro, and Caelum arrived at Braldin’s forge to find him actively engaged in the day's work. Braldin was at the hearth, carefully stoking the fires to maintain the perfect temperature for forging. His practiced hand worked the bellows, skilfully managing the intensity of the flames. The glow from the forge cast a warm light on his face, highlighting his focused expression.

As they approached, Braldin paused in his work and greeted them with a warm smile. "Ah, Deo! You've just missed Freya and Hilda," he said, wiping his hands on a cloth. "They set off to the southern hills about thirty minutes ago, hoping to find some good ore deposits.

"No problem," Deo replied, his voice carrying a note of enthusiasm. "We’ll catch up to them."

With a quick farewell to Braldin and some last-minute advice on where to start their search, Deo, Pyro, and an enthusiastic Caelum set off towards the southern hills. As they left Harmony’s Refuge, they passed through a deliberate opening in the green wall encircling the hamlet. The Ironclaw Bushes, that now reached up to their knees, stood menacingly with thorns that glimmered in the morning sun. This natural barrier, grown and nurtured by Deo, provided a sense of security and protection to the inhabitants of the refuge. Exiting the enclosed safety of the hamlet, they stepped into the open landscape. The path they followed wound through a landscape that gradually transitioned from the familiar surroundings of the settlement to the open and wilder areas of the south.

As they walked, the scenery around them opened up into vast fields, where the grass swayed gently in the breeze under the expansive sky. Pyro took to the open space with vigour, bounding about in the fields with an infectious energy. His movements were graceful and playful, a stark contrast to his previously protective demeanour. Every so often, he would circle back to Deo and Caelum, as if to make sure they were keeping up, before dashing off again in joyous exploration.

Caelum watched Pyro with a wide-eyed wonder, his more customary seriousness giving way to a child's delight at the sight of the hellhound's unrestrained happiness. "He really enjoys being out here, doesn't he?" Caelum remarked, a smile spreading across his face.

"He does," Deo agreed, watching Pyro with a fond smile. "Open fields like these are his favourite."

Their journey took them over gently rolling hills, each crest offering a new view of the beautiful landscape that made up the outskirts of Harmony’s Refuge. The sun was warm on their backs, and a light breeze carried the fresh scent of grass and earth, making the walk both pleasant and invigorating.

As they trekked across the open landscape, Caelum's attention was suddenly drawn to a small thicket off to the side of their path. The dense cluster of bushes and undergrowth seemed to pique his curiosity, and without a second thought, he veered off towards it.

"Hey, look at this!" Caelum called out, his voice laced with intrigue as he pushed through the foliage to get a closer look. Deo and Pyro, following the sound of his voice, watched as Caelum carefully made his way into the thicket.

A moment later, Caelum's tone shifted from curiosity to alarm. "Oh no, what is that?" he exclaimed, his voice tinged with horror. Deo hurried over, Pyro close at his heels, to see what had startled the boy.

In a small clearing within the thicket, they saw what had caught Caelum's attention. Nestled among the underbrush was a small but unmistakably carnivorous plant. Its vibrant colours were deceptive, belying its dangerous nature. The plant had several pod-like structures that seemed almost to be waiting for an unsuspecting creature to wander too close.

Caelum, still staring at the carnivorous plant with a mix of fear and confusion, turned to Deo. "I thought you'd cleansed the corruption from the World Tree. Why are there still carnivorous plants like this?"

Deo, his concern rapidly mounting, extended his senses, invoking his Flora Communication skill. He focused, attuning himself to the natural energy of the plant, ready to sense any sign of corruption. As his consciousness melded with plant, he was on high alert for the familiar rush of primal hunger he had encountered with corrupted plants.

However, to his relief, what he found was markedly different. Instead of overwhelming hunger or malevolent intent, there was a simple, primitive awareness. It was a basic existence, revolving around survival in its nutrient-poor environment. The plant's essence was not about dominance or corruption but a straightforward, unyielding purpose inherent to its natural design. This realization washed over Deo like a wave of relief – the carnivorous plant was just a natural component of the ecosystem, not a product of corruption.

To confirm his assessment, Deo then activated his Botanical Knowledge skill:

Drosera Capensis

* Tier: Uncommon

* Description: The Drosera Capensis, commonly known as the Cape Sundew, is a small but fascinating carnivorous plant. It has slender, elongated leaves covered in tiny, glistening glandular tentacles that secrete a sticky, dew-like substance. This secretion lures and traps small insects, which the plant digests to supplement its nutrient intake.

* Properties: The Cape Sundew is known for its unique insect-trapping mechanism. The sticky substance on its tentacles ensures that small insects such as gnats, flies, and mosquitoes are captured and then digested. This process allows the plant to thrive in nutrient-poor soil conditions, where other plants might struggle to survive.

* Growth Conditions:

* Soil: Prefers sandy or peaty soil with good drainage, low in nutrients.

* Sunlight: Requires full sun to partial shade. Direct sunlight encourages more vibrant leaf color and better secretion production.

* Water: Prefers consistent moisture, often grown in standing water trays to mimic boggy conditions.

* Temperature: Thrives in moderate temperatures, but can tolerate a range of conditions, often found in temperate climates.

With his initial worry assuaged, Deo withdrew from the connection and turned to Caelum. "This is a natural carnivorous plant, a normal part of the ecosystem," he explained, his voice calm and steady. "It's not a result of corruption, but an important part of nature's balance."

Caelum, looking for reassurance, asked, "So they're not bad?"

"No, they're not bad at all," Deo affirmed. "Plants like this one, the Cape sundew, are actually a part of a healthy ecosystem. They've adapted to their environment in a unique way. In areas where the soil is poor, especially in nutrients like nitrogen, these plants obtain what they need by trapping and digesting insects."

Deo paused, ensuring Caelum was following. "This isn't just about their survival; it's about balance. By controlling insect populations, they prevent overpopulation and the problems that can cause. It's a natural form of pest control and contributes to the health of the ecosystem."

Caelum listened, his initial horror giving way to understanding. "So, they're kind of like... nature's way of keeping things in check?" he asked.

"Exactly," Deo replied with a nod. "Each plant, each creature has its role. The balance of nature is delicate and yet complex."

With new understanding shining in his eyes, Caelum took one last look at the Cape sundew, now with a sense of respect rather than fear. Deo and Pyro led the way back to their route, continuing their journey to the southern hills, the brief encounter serving as an educational moment about the wonders and intricacies of nature.

Before long, they reached the southern hills and headed towards the location Braldin had described to them. The landscape gradually changed, becoming more rugged and rocky as they ascended. Soon, the distinct clang of a pickaxe striking stone reached their ears. The sound grew louder as they moved closer, guiding them to the source.

As they approached, the voices of Freya and Hilda became audible. “Rock and Stone, sister!” Freya exclaimed loudly, her voice echoing off the hills. “That’s all there is in these blasted hills, just rock and stone.”

Her tone carried a mix of frustration and determination, typical of someone who had been working hard but had yet to find what they were searching for. Deo, Pyro, and Caelum quickened their pace, eager to join Freya and Hilda and see if they could lend a hand in the prospecting effort. The sound of their endeavour was a beacon, pulling the trio onward and upward into the heart of the southern hills.
