Days turned into weeks at Harmony’s Refuge as the hamlet settled into a steady pattern. Each morning, Deo would rise with the sun, embarking on his daily ritual of nurturing the crops. Harnessing his Verdant Growth skill, now significantly enhanced since reaching level 10, Deo could boost flora over a vast area simultaneously. The crops under his care - Crimsonroots, Golden Grain, and Sylphbeans - had flourished remarkably, standing taller, exhibiting more vibrant colour, and displaying a robustness that surpassed even the previous harvest. This extraordinary growth of the crops mirrored Deo's own development, where he had now ascended to the esteemed class of Yggdrasil’s Chosen, reflecting his deepening bond with the natural world and his growing mastery as a Green Mage.
After his morning routine with the crops, Deo would settle back for a well-deserved breakfast, taking time to rest and recuperate his mana. He was cautious with his mana usage in the mornings, conserving his energy for the mammoth undertaking that awaited him in the early afternoon. As the sun climbed to its zenith, Deo readied himself once more, focusing his magical energies on the encircling wall of Ironclaw Bushes. These formidable barriers were swiftly becoming the hamlet’s first line of defence, growing steadily each day under his careful attention. Now reaching chest height, the bushes reciprocated Deo’s dedication and patience, their dense, thorny branches forming an almost impenetrable natural enclosure.
Deo would expend nearly all of his mana on this task, meticulously guiding the growth of each bush to form a continuous and effective barrier. Despite the drain on his energy, he found satisfaction in seeing the wall thicken and strengthen, knowing the security it would provide to Harmony’s Refuge and the potential it held to meet his quest requirements. He also continued to experiment with his Celestial Bloom skill in conjunction with Verdant Growth. Mindful of his past overextension, Deo approached this skill with caution and control, keenly aware of the balance required in using such a potent skill, determined not to repeat the mistakes that had led to his previous exhaustion.
The Iron Thicket, as the denizens of Harmony’s Refuge had taken to calling it, was a sight to behold. Each bush stood robust and thick with foliage, their deep green leaves almost black in certain lights. The thorns, long, sharp, and abundant, protruded menacingly, adding a wild beauty to their formidable appearance. The wall wove through the landscape, encircling the hamlet and fields and extending to the lakeside at both ends, whilst leaving plenty of room for expansion within it’s thorny embrace. From a distance, the barrier appeared as a natural part of the landscape, slightly masking the presence of the hamlet within. While fostering the growth of the Ironclaw bushes, Deo left three deliberate openings, one at each cardinal direction, providing access while maintaining security. Though currently adequate, Deo recognized the need to soon fortify each entrance, ensuring comprehensive protection for the growing community.
In the afternoon he’d set out to explore his surrounding territory, Deo would embark on explorations of the surrounding territory, a routine that had become a cherished part of his day. Accompanied by the faithful Pyro, and occasionally joined by Caelum or other residents from the hamlet, he ventured through the diverse landscapes bordering their community. These excursions allowed Deo to familiarize himself with every inch of his verdant domain. He used this time not only for exploration but also for relaxation, engaging in playful chases and games of fetch with Pyro, and hiding treats in the underbrush for his companion to sniff out.
It was during these leisurely moments, amidst laughter and play, that Deo found the perfect opportunity to experiment with his new skill, Sylvan Step. This ability allowed him to teleport short distances by stepping through the roots of Yggdrasil, appearing and disappearing amidst a swirl of leaves. The description of the skill alone had intrigued him, and now he was eager to test its limits.
The first time Deo activated Sylvan Step, the sensation was both exhilarating and disorienting. As he focused on a spot a few meters away, he felt a sudden rush, like the ground beneath him had turned fluid. There was a brief moment of weightlessness, a feeling of being suspended in space, and then the world around him blurred into a cascade of green and brown. He reappeared with a swirl of leaves rustling around him, a few meters from where he had started, leaving Pyro momentarily surprised. The Hellhound's ears perked up, and his head tilted in confusion before he bounded over to Deo with an excited bark, as if inviting him to try it again.
Encouraged by Pyro's reaction, Deo experimented further with Sylvan Step, each teleportation a playful challenge between him and Pyro. He would vanish and reappear behind trees, atop small hillocks, or across streams, each time eliciting an eager response from Pyro, who seemed to relish this new game. Deo couldn't help but laugh as he watched Pyro's attempts to predict where he would appear next. The Hellhound's sharp instincts and keen senses made it a fun, albeit challenging, game for both. By the end of their playful lark in the woods, Deo was greeted with a system notification:
[Skill Level Up! Sylvan Step has reached Level 2! Increased distance that you can teleport.]
As evening approached and the sun dipped towards the horizon, Deo's mana would have replenished enough to allow for one final task of the day. He would make his way to the greenhouse, a sanctuary of diverse plant life that thrived under his care. Here, he dedicated his remaining mana to accelerate the growth of the plants within, including the epic and valuable Celestia tree. Despite his dedicated efforts and the powerful magic at his disposal, progress was incremental. He estimated that he had succeeded in reducing the Celestia tree's natural growth cycle from 50 to 49 years. The slow pace of advancement was a sobering reminder of the need for patience in his role as a Green Mage.
This realisation, while somewhat disheartening, did not dampen Deo's resolve. After all, the bulk of his mana and effort were currently being channelled into growing and expanding the Iron Thicket. The thorny barrier was a crucial defence for Harmony’s Refuge, and its completion and effectiveness remained a priority. Deo knew that once the Iron Thicket was fully established and functioning as a formidable defence mechanism, he could redirect more of his attention and mana towards accelerating the growth of the Celestia tree.
While Deo dedicated himself to his Green Mage duties, the other members of Harmony's Refuge were equally busy, each contributing their unique skills and talents to the growing community. Caelum, the young Halfling, often shadowed Deo, eager to learn and observe the practical applications of his magical abilities. When not assisting Deo, Caelum could be found engrossed in one of the few books he had brought from Willowdale, absorbing every bit of knowledge they contained. Thalen, meanwhile, had begun work on brewing, with his early attempts at alcohol production resulting in a variety of prototypes. These experimental brews were a topic of much interest among the hamlet’s residents, who eagerly sampled them and offered their feedback.
Freya and Hilda, the indefatigable cousins, were fully engaged in the task of extracting copper and other valuable ores discovered during their recent prospecting success. They worked tirelessly, transporting the ores back to the hamlet where Braldin, the apprentice blacksmith, took over. In his forge, Braldin smelted the ores into usable bars, supplying Kiera with the raw materials she needed for her craft. Kiera, with her natural flair for jewelcrafting, had started working on her first pieces in the new workshop. Lena was often found baking an array of delicious goods, filling the air with inviting aromas. Her prowess in the kitchen was well known, but lately, she had also been engrossed in a 'secret project' that she kept under wraps, piquing the curiosity of everyone in the hamlet.

After one particularly exhausting day of growing plants Deo was relaxing in The Hellhound, the hamlet’s cosy tavern. Seated with him were Caelum and Lena, the trio engaged in light games with a deck of playing cards that Thalen had provided them. They were identical to those found on Earth, apart from the notable exception that the picture cards were emblazoned with significant figures from Halfling history. Deo was attempting to teach Caelum and Lena how to play ‘go fish’. Pyro lounged contentedly by the hearth, adding to the tavern's homely atmosphere.
During a lull in the game, Deo, rubbing his temples from the day’s exertions, turned to Caelum with a thoughtful expression. "How long until you get your class, Caelum? I could really use a second Green Mage around here. You've been a great help, but channelling mana into all these plants is quite a task."
Caelum looked up, his eyes reflecting a mix of eagerness and patience. "It's about a year and a half until my Ascension Day, Master Deo," he answered with a hint of anticipation in his voice.
Deo chuckled softly, a playful smile on his lips. "Shame I can’t use Verdant Growth on you, eh?" he joked, lightening the mood.
The conversation gently shifted to Lena, with Caelum inquiring, "When's your Ascension Day, Auntie Lena?" His use of the affectionate term brought a warm, slightly sad smile to Lena's face.
"Oh, it's actually just a couple of weeks away. I always bake a cheesecake on that day," Lena replied, her voice carrying a mixture of nostalgia and melancholy, as she mentioned the tradition. Her gaze momentarily drifted, as if recalling sad memories.
The game of 'go fish' continued for a few more rounds, the atmosphere in The Hellhound relaxed and congenial. As they shuffled the cards for another round, the door to the tavern swung open, and in walked Kiera, arm in arm with Braldin. The two shared a look of quiet pride and excitement, a clear sign that they had something special to share. In Kiera's hand was a small, neatly wrapped item. The pair made their way through the tavern, heading straight for Deo. Deo, Lena and Caelum paused their discussions as they sensed the importance of this moment.
"We wanted to offer you the very first item we created together," Kiera said, her voice filled with gratitude and a touch of nervousness. "It's our way of saying thank you for inviting us into your territory, and for all the support you've given us."
With a mix of curiosity and anticipation, Deo carefully unwrapped the item. Inside, he found a beautifully crafted copper bracelet. The design was exquisite, featuring intricate details that formed the shape of a hellhound, a clear homage to Pyro. The copper gleamed in the tavern's light, its warm tones complimenting the detailed craftsmanship. Pyro, sensing the focus of attention, ambled over and sniffed the bracelet. After a brief inspection, he gave a soft grunt of approval, as if to say it was worthy of being associated with his likeness.
Deo held the bracelet up, admiring the craftsmanship. "This is incredible," he said, genuinely impressed. "You've both done an amazing job. Thank you, it means a lot. Now please, join us for a game of Go Fish”.
"Go fish?" Kiera asked softly, bemused by the name.
Caelum eagerly jumped in to explain, his face lighting up with excitement. “It’s super fun, Miss Kiera! You have all these cards in the ocean, and you ask for a certain number, like, do you have any fours? And if you don’t have any, you have to shout GO FISH!”
Kiera chuckled at Caelum's enthusiastic explanation, but confusion remained displayed on her face. "Okay, I did not follow that at all, but sure, why not," she replied with a smile, settling into her seat.
As they started the game, Braldin tried to keep a straight face while holding his cards, but his poker face couldn't hide the smug grin when he had a good hand. Lena, meanwhile, teased Caelum gently for his over-enthusiasm, which only made him more determined to win.
Their laughter and chatter were interrupted when Thalen walked in, carrying several tankards of a new brew. "Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, my latest creation, Halfling's Kick!" he announced, placing the tankards on the table with a proud smile.
"It's a unique blend," Thalen began, with the air of a true connoisseur. "A fusion of local herbs and a specially cultivated barley. It's got a bit of a kick, hence the name. I hope you like it."
Before the group could take their first sips, the tavern door opened once more, this time admitting Freya and Hilda, their arrival adding to the cheerful commotion. The cousins, fresh from their day's work mining, looked tired but satisfied. They greeted everyone warmly as the group scooted over to make room, welcoming the latest arrivals with open arms.
Freya grabbed the tankard nearest to Caelum with a playful sternness. “None of that for you, young man,” she said loudly, before taking a hearty gulp. “Drorin’s Beard! This one has one hell of a punch, Thalen. You’ve outdone yourself,” she exclaimed, taking another generous swig.
Meanwhile, Deo cautiously sipped his drink and gently placed the mug back down, his face betraying a hint of uncertainty. “Maybe not my type,” he commented with a slight grimace.
“So, what are we playing? Dwarven Delve? Miners Retreat?” Freya asked, her eyes scanning the card game in progress.
“GO FISH!” Braldin exclaimed with an enthusiasm that made everyone chuckle. The night continued in high spirits, as Freya, Hilda and Thalen joined them at the table. The tavern atmosphere was buoyant as the evening wore on, with the sounds of clinking tankards, playful banter over the card game, and hearty laughter resonating through the space. Deo, engaged in the game and the joviality of the moment, turned to Thalen with a curious expression. "Thalen, do you mind telling us more about these Halfling Kings and Queens on the cards?" he asked, picking up one adorned with a regal figure.
Thalen, his usually taciturn manner loosened by the alcohol he had imbibed, leaned back in his chair, a look of nostalgia crossing his face. "Ah, these cards," he began, "they depict the eight greatest rulers from Halfling history. Each one of them played a pivotal role in shaping our culture and lands."
“Let's see,” Thalen continued, sifting through the cards with a smile. “We have Queen Elinor, who established the first Council of Elders in the famed Halfling nation of Greenvale. Her wisdom and foresight brought unprecedented peace and prosperity.”
He then pulled out another card. “And here’s King Borin. He was famous for starting the annual Brewfest, a tradition that celebrates our love for good food and better ale. It's said that his own brews were legendary.”
Finally, he picked up another card, his expression turning a bit more somber. “Now this is King Alaric, known for his tragic love story with an Elven maiden. Their tale is one of love transcending the boundaries of race and kingdom. It didn't end well, but it's a story that's taught us about acceptance and the complexities of the heart.”
Intrigued, Hilda spoke up from across the table, “Tell us more about Alaric, Thalen.”
Thalen, now fully immersed in the role of storyteller, nodded in understanding. “King Alaric’s story is both romantic and sorrowful. He fell in love with Princess Lyriana, fifth in line to the Elven throne of Sylvanora. Their love was something out of a legend, transcending the boundaries of their distinct cultures. Despite many objections, they were married, a union celebrated for its symbol of unity and love.”
He took a slow sip from his tankard, his eyes reflecting the depth of the story he was about to tell. “But as fate would have it, the political landscape in Sylvanora was treacherous. In a period marked by great turmoil, the four heirs before Lyriana were assassinated under mysterious circumstances. Suddenly, she was thrust into a position she never expected to inherit.”
A hush fell over the table as everyone absorbed the gravity of the story. “Faced with the daunting task of stabilizing her kingdom, Lyriana had to return to Sylvanora. King Alaric, bound by his own kingly duties, remained in the Halfling kingdom. Although their love endured, it was no match for the harsh demands of their roles. They met only a few times afterward but were never able to resume the life they once dreamed of. Their story is remembered as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices sometimes demanded by duty.”
The mood lightened when Freya playfully nudged Hilda, “Don’t worry, I bet we can find you an Elven maiden out there.”
“Oi,” Hilda retorted, pushing her cousin back lightly, and the group soon returned to their mirthful banter and card games.
The group quickly returned to their drink and games as the night resumed it’s joyful manner.
As the night wound down, Deo excused himself and strolled back to his home, Pyro at his side. Passing by an open storage chest, he noticed a slightly dusty tome tucked away in the corner. It was 'Elixirs and Elements: A Novice's Guide to Alchemy,' a book he hadn't touched in a while. Picking it up, he placed it by his bedside, planning to delve into its contents the next day.
