Chapter 37 - Reavers

Chapter 37 - Reavers

“What?” at first I felt flumoxed. How can he have meant all Reavers.

“Raven? Is this true?”

She shook her head.

“That’s all I need, if she is saying she isn’t with them then I believe her.”

“Then you are bloody well blind old boy,”

“I’ve been with Raven a while now, I have had enough fights with her, enough arguments to know that if she wanted to kill me she would have already.” I was defensive and I didn’t care. "Raven, come on I think we need to leave.”

I stood up ready to march straight out of the door, Raven hopped in her chair.

“Wait, wait, wait,” Geovana said “You can’t go out there with her, if you do you won’t make it past the guards check point. “Galahad, stop talking, let me explain about the Reavers and then, you can do what you need to Silas. At least I know I will have given you all the information you need.”

I sighed, I wanted to leave but Raven wasn’t able to tell me what she knew so this was the best shot I had at learning something about her past and I hoped this would help me with her side quest.

“You have five minutes,” I said, after that we are gone.

“It is the least I can do after you stood up to Morgrim. But I must ask, what are five minutes?”

“It’s a time thing,” I pointed at my watch, Galahad’s eyes widened so much that I thought he would try and snatch it from me, likely for his next drink.

“I am not disputing that Raven has helped you, you have been more than honest in your situation and how she has saved you more than once. What you need to know is that she is very clearly a reaver, all be it a young one but she is a Reaver non the less.” Geavana said.

Raven rolled her eyes, making a ‘duh’ gesture. She made a sign but once again I didn’t know what she meant.

“Is she deaf?” Geovana asked.

“No she is mute, I don’t know how but we just kind of crossed paths. Not long after I ended up with a side quest called whispers. I need to help her find the whispers of her past. That is something I want to do for her, it is the least I can do.”

“I understand, now usually I would freak out myself if a Reaver was in the room but I will admit she does seem different, her temperament is under control.

These guys hadn’t seen her in action, for them to make such a bold accusation made me dread what a fully grown Reaver would be like. Sure she had been difficult, she had caused the bar fight, something I still didn’t know the reason for other than not being happy with me escorting Gary and Vera here.

“Reaver’s are feral, well usually they are, I have never come across a youngling before. They are usually much older, although when I say come across I mean heard of because it is safe to say that not many people come out of those encounters alive.”

“Savages they are,” Galahad piped up, Geavana gave him a hard stare that forced him to shrink back into his armour. He was about to speak again, when Geovana followed up with a prolonged stare and shrunk into his armour, for his better judgement. GEovana was twice the size of him and although I couldn’t see his level i assumed he would be able to back up that hard stare, given Galahads reaction.

“Ravager’s are not necessarily part of this world, they were summoned. Created in another realm and dragged into these plains to do the bidding of the person who summoned them, who ultimately has control of them.”

“Belzebere,” I said. I turned towards Raven, “That’s why you keep vanishing when Fidget makes contact with you, you knew that she would know what you were and thats what you would tell me.”

Raven’s expression turned to one of a rabit caught in the headlights and shook her head. She started signing.

“That’s why Sy was cautious about you when we found him. You knew that if Fidget said what you were then you wouldn’t have been able to stay with me.

Raven continued signing, more animatedly though now, she seemed desperate to tell me something.

“The thing is Silas, I have never heard of a Reaver breaking free from the control of Belzebere, I don’t even know how it is that she controls them or communicates for them. Perhaps it is telepathic, that could be the only explanation.”

Geovana’s face read like something had dawned on her. “That means that Belzebere could know you are here now, she could have seen our faces.” The colour drained from him.

“Is this true Raven?”

She didn’t move, no signing not a shake of her head.

“Is this true?” My voice was raised, even though Raven couldn’t speak to me I felt as though she had been lying to me all this time. Or at the very least misleading me.

Raven had a blanc expression, she was looking into my eyes but seemed like she was frozen to the spot.

“I said is it true,” I raised my voice even more, startling Geovana and Galahad.

She shrugged her shoulders.

“This would be so much easier if you could talk to me!”

Raven started signing to me but I didn’t understand what she was saying, despite her trying her best, she wasn’t aggressively signing for a change but it only served to add to my frustrations.

“Let’s all calm down,” Geovana said, trying to cut through the tension.

“I dare say I agree with the bar wench.” Galahad said.

“Call me a wench again.” Geovana said.

Galahad raised his hands, “No offence meant.”

“Consider it taken.” he said, he leant forward onto his elbows which were planted on the table. I am trying to calm this situation down, no one is going to benefit from you going all berserkery on us, besides, something seems different with you energy when you activated that skill.”

“The problem we have is that either Raven here, is under Belzebere’s control, which means all of this is a trap.”

Raven shook her head in disagreement.

“Or somehow she has found a way to break free of Belzebere’s control and escape.”

Raven started nodding, pointing towards Geovana.

“That’s it then,” he said. “You have somehow broke free and escaped.”

Raven nodded again.

“The thing is I have never heard of this happening before. What if she takes back control of you?”

“Could that happen?” I aksed. I had seen what Raven was capible of and the last thing I wanted was for her to lose control and as Galahad said, go full savage on us. “Could Belzebere take control of you?” I asked.

Raven shrugged her shoulders again and sighed.

I guess this was why we had her side quest to complete.

“Maybe this is why I have the whispers quest,” I said, “If we can just figure that out, perhaps it somehow links to the chaos blades. What if it is all linked.”

The question was, where did we go from here.

“What about Morgrim?” Geovana said, “He was spooked when he saw Raven standing in front of him. The man near shit himself at the sight of a Reaver.”

“Wouldn’t anyone,” Galahad said, sniffing the air and checking himself.

“Don’t worry, I checked you while you were passed out.” Geovana said with a smile.

"The way Morgrim reacted was different. He could tell she was a Reaver but what if he recognised her.” I said, “Raven did you recognise Morgrim.”

Raven stretched her hand out and waved her hand from side to side.

“He definately recognised you,” I said, “And I dont mean like as in you are reaver, he knew who you are. If I can find him, maybe we can get some answers for you. Then we can get the hell out of here.”

“Wait, you can’t be serious. Do you even know who Morgrim is?” GEovana protested, shaking his head, it was clear he disapproved with the plan. “Not over is he stronger than you but he isn’t even the one in charge.”

“Who is in charge then.” I asked, if not Morgrim, I will go straight to him to get the answer that we need.

“The Godsfather,” Galahad said.

I stood their in disbelief and shook my head, “Yu have got to be kidding me.” The kingpin of this town was called The Godsfather and no one in the room could see the humour in that. “Ok I am going to need you to tell me what you can about this Godsfather. I need to know as much as possible if I am going to get information out of him. These guys know something about Raven’s past and we have to find out. How long has he been hear.”

“The Godsfather has run Willowshire for years, as soon as he managed to get the control of teh captain of the guards he had everything that he needed. He collects taxes, for protection of course. That is supposed to stop theh trouble happening around the business that pay.” Geovana said. “Not that that did me much use today.” He sighed.

“So you pay him protection money.” I asked.

“Not like I have much option, it’s either pay the coin or pay the consequences, I know which option works for me. You have seen how strong Morgrim is, no one is going to say no to him.”

“I would,” Galahad said defiantly.

“And look how many times that has got you knocked out. I bet you don’t even remember half of the fights that you have had, you are lucky to still be alive. Out there giving a whole new meaning to the term punch drunk.”

I laughed, I had to give it to Galahad, he was persistent if anything else.

“My boy this is no laughing matter, The Godsfather is the most powerfull man in the whole of Willowshire, his influence, his control. He has all of it. He is the blasted reason I am still here, the scoundrel has my sword and shield.”

“Then let’s go and get it back.” I said.

“You must have a death wish. Do you actually think you can just walk up into his hideout, demand answers and steal from him.” Geovana said.

Raising his hand Galahad said, “Well technically it isn’t stealling if we take what is already stolen.”

“Nope, uh, uh,” Geovana shook his head standing up and walking back behind the bar to pour himself a drink. “You are crazy if you think you are going to be able to do that. He doesn’t just show up for anyone, he never gets involved. He always gets others to do his bidding.”

“Well that looks like we just need to get his attention then. Galahad, you said that he had your sword, if you help us and I promised to help you get your sword and shield back, would that be enough of a deal.”

“I can’t say that I feel confident but with four of us we may just well be able to pull this off.” He said.

“No, I can tell you now that I am not stepping foot outside of this Tavern, I have got a business to run and people depend on me. By all means feel free to drink here, to use this space to come up with a plan but that is as far as I go. Sometimes you have got to pick your battles. And when all this is said and done I would like to still have my tavern and my life.”

“What about you two?” I asked, “I won’t be able to do this on my own.”

“Count me in old boy, I have got nothing to lose.”

Raven stepped forward, nodding agreement with the plan. She seemed keen to find out her past too.

“Are you sure you want to do this Galahad, you know what happened last time you stepped out of line,” Geovana said.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Well after he got a savage beating he was placed in the stocks for ten days. No food or water.”

Galahad gave Geovana a look of bemusement as if he had no idea what she was talking about.

"Are we going to sit around gossiping all day or are we going to get my things back?” Galahad said, “First things first though, Geovana, may I have another drink before we do anything.”
