I knocked on the door of the Guard's house and heard Kellan call us in. As we entered the main room Leo, Owen, and Finn were working on something while Kellan came walking in from the small kitchen.
"Ah, there you are. Seems you were done with sleeping in the house?" he asked while laughing.
"Uhm, well no, not really but it was quite comfy in the early morning" I replied a bit shyly.
"Well, at least you got some rest. Come over here, we got something for you guys." Kellan walked over to the 3 guys who by now turned around trying to hide something behind them.
Leo was the first to say something.
"Hey, we got something made and it is a present from us to you for finishing your training and doing your best to protect the town earlier. It was a big shock to see what happened but in the end, a lot of people still live thanks to you guys." He gave the word to Owen.
"You guys have done a great job at training these last few weeks and made massive progress. Your magic-wielding as well as your combat abilities have all grown in your respective classes. We didn't expect you guys to grow this fast and far." Finally, Finn took the last turn.
"And Lucian, you have improved massively with your healing magic. I knew you would be very talented but the efficiency of your healing is already far beyond what you started out with and further ahead than others who would train for this period of time. So congratulations all on your training and growth."
Kellan stepped forward and stood in front of the other 3. "The last week has been a disaster for the town. It has been clouded by destruction and death. But we should not lose sight of the things we have achieved, even if they are just small compared to other events. Without looking for the light..."
I interrupted Kellan together with my sister and finished his sentence in stereo.
"We would be lost in the dark".
Kellan looked surprised but his surprise quickly turned into a sense of relief.
"Seems like my little brother didn't just leave you empty-handed."
We laughed for a bit, remembering the cheesy line that apparently was passed down from higher up the family tree.
"Well, now for your presents," Kellan called out joyfully. "We pulled some strings here and there, and this was before the attack mind you, and yesterday they arrived."
The 3 guards stepped aside to reveal 3 armor sets befitting the classes we chose.
After a few minutes, we all changed into our respective armor, which was a lot easier than I thought it would be.
When we were done we not only felt the part but also looked like it now.
My sister and I had somewhat similar-looking armor. The main things that were different were some parts being fabric for her and some kind of lightweight metal for me.
This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
The collar of our body armor was relatively high for protection of the neck. Mine had a thin metal plate worked in for more protection, whereas for my sister it was just leather.
We both had similar shoulder guards that were made from the same metal as were our gloves, though mine was a bit more all around while Sis had more protection on the outside of her arm and hand than inside.
The chest armor was also lightweight and pretty much closed up for me, though it didn't hinder me at all in movement. It was layered perfectly for me to move around as freely as I wanted. Sis had her chest protected, but under her chin and around her middle, it was all just some very durable leather.
We both got some armor boots that followed a similar pattern where I had a bit more protection and Sis got a bit of a lighter version of it.
The only thing I didn't enjoy as much, was the pants though. For me, it wasn't really an issue. Sturdy leather pants with good flexibility and no movement penalty. But for Sis... Let's say it was a bit drafty down below.
She had a black skirt for her waist 'armor' that went about three-quarters down to the knees and on top of that she had a longer skirt that was open on the front but went down to her ankles.
It was new for me as I was still getting used to wearing the outfit I received from Jack after getting out of the hospital. Which I hardly wore as my sister because it felt so weird.
Seems like now is the time to get used to it than. I sighed a little.
The metal armor parts were all silver but the fabrics and leather parts were greyscale for me and a very nice red color for her. And the extra cherry on top was a beautiful ornament in my sister's hair.
Yes, I have some form of fashion sense. Character creators were my favorite parts of fantasy games for a reason.
Lucian on the other hand went full fantasy white mage. Even I was amazed at how much it reminded me of those armors from fantasy games.
His armor had no metal parts except for some clasps and belts. The color scheme was traditional white but had some fabrics that were a nice dark red and the more mantle-like parts were blue on the inside. There were some overlapping parts of the armor and the top layers, especially the chest part, had some gold ornaments and clasps.
Never would I have thought I would travel like an adventurer and look the part as well. At least not this fast.
"You guys look fantastic," Kellan said full of pride. "It might have taken some time to complete but, damn those look good on you."
Looking at each other I could not agree more.
"Ok, so listen up. I have sent word ahead to a guy by the name of Alden. He works for the town guards in Stonebridge. I asked him to set you up with a transport that travels south following the river to Alora. If you depart today you will arrive in StoneBridge in about 4 days. Ask the town guards about him and tell them I sent you. They will bring you to him. He will handle the rest. Any questions?"
We all looked at each other and nodded, agreeing we got it all memorized and were ready for the journey.
"Good," Kellan said as he clapped his hands together. "Then let's get you ready for the journey."
The next hour we packed some bags with food, some camping equipment, and some tools. Eventually, we arrived at the southern gate of Birchbirdge.
"Well, that's it then guys. Take good care of yourselves ok?" Kellan had tears building up in his eyes.
Me and Sis walked up to him and gave him a hug.
"Kellan, don't worry ok? We will come back. We will try to send messages as much as possible with updates on our journey. So you be careful as well ok? We don't want to lose you just as much as you don't want to let us go." Sis said.
We let go when Lucian reached out a hand.
"Thank you, Kellan. For everything" Kellan grabbed his hand and shook it firmly.
"You're welcome, Lucian. You make sure these two don't do anything stupid, ok?"
Lucian couldn't do anything other than laugh at his question.
"You mean like going on a wild goose chase into the unknown for what is basically a revenge mission? Yeah, I'll make sure they don't do anything stupid."
"Good boy. Now go." He said, smiling again."Be sure to find the bastards and give them hell for me. I'll make sure there is still a town for you to return home to."
And with a final smile and a deep and sincere bow, we thanked Kellan one last time before heading off to Stonebridge.
"Say thanks to Jack for me when you see him!" I called out as we walked away.
