Ch 21: Cave Tower Defense Pt. 2

Ch 21: Cave Tower Defense Pt. 2

I notice a light encroaching along into our cave, along with a sound of distant clacking.

“Hold on honey, I’ll be right back”

“Is everything okay?

“Yeah, I just need to check something real fast,” I reassure her

I head outside and I notice a moving star in the distance. It had been moving sporadically.

I have no idea what that is, but honestly, I doubt it’s good

Oliver happens to know about the book we happened to get trapped in, so any questions I have I give to Oli.

“Oli wake up” I jiggle the man awake.

“Wa, what is it Brandon” He yawns

“I see a moving star,”

“You mean a shooting star? That's nice you should make a wish” he says groggily as slowly starts to drift off again.

“No, it’s moving weirdly and sporadically. It ain't no shooting star.” I say

“That’s weird what do me- OH SHIT!” Oliver promptly grabs his glasses and gets to his feet as he exits the cave

“FUCK CAMERON GET UP QUICK!” Oliver shouts

Cameron clumsily rolls over and gets up “wha, what is it?!” he grumpily says and he walks over.

“PUT A WALL QUICK,” Oliver demands.

Cameron looks at the moving star and gets to work. He reaches up and grabs the cave ceiling like it’s play dough and with a heavy grunt he pulls it down dimming any form of light in the cave.

“OLIVER WE’RE GOING TO FUCKING SUFFOCATE!” I shout

“Wait I got this” Cameron says, as he punches 3 holes through the walls he made, which had begun to act like normal rock walls again.

“Is this good enough?” Cameron asks out of breath, but Oliver practically pulls his hair as he panics about what he should do.

“Oliver, what are we dealing with exactly?” I try to ask calmly as the sporadic star starts to gain significant volume.

“Ghost flies,” he says with unparalleled angst

If I remember correctly Oliver told us that those were giant flies that move at mock speeds.

“Cameron, can you make us some spears?” I ask

Cameron tries to conjure the form of a spear, but it’s too big and complex for him to conjure at the moment.

“Sorry bud, I can’t right now,” Cameron says between puffs.

Fuck what do we do here we’re wide open. What can I do? All I can do is make plants grow slightly faster.

Wait hold on this might work.

I go to grab some random mix of fruits we got from scavenging and I use all my strength to increase the root growth of the plant.

“Cameron I just need you to make a spear tip, make it sturdy if possible, can you manage that?” I ask breathing heavily after building 1 spear.

Cameron conjured a long triangular spear tip, that was considerably dull. However, it was firm and hard which was good enough. I grab the roots I made from the fruit seeds and tie them around the tip. With that, albeit being quite makeshift, we only had two more spears to go. However, the ghostflies weren’t going to wait for us. As the clackitting had gotten considerably more noticeable.

Halfway through the second forming of my spear, a massive chitin insect with white whisps for wings had blitzed through one of the holes that Cameron had made. The sudden visitor had all of us screaming, as it started limping around aimlesslessly.

“OLIVER TAKE THE SPEAR AND KILL IT!” I scream holding my cut sides.

Oliver stumbles as he goes to reach for the spear, after getting up Oliver screams as he drives the spear through the insect, the white blood sac getting all over the cave walls

“Good job! if anymore get in kill them!” I yell as I finish my second spear that I hand to Cameron “That goes for you too.”

“Emilia! Go to the back of the cave quickly!” I shout

There’s no way in hell I'm going to put my wife and future kid in danger now.

As I was making my 3rd spear the onslaught of bullet-like insects started banging into the wall. Several insects were coming in at a time. Oliver and Cameron were scrambling around killing all of them as quickly as they could. Luckily it seemed that the ghost flies didn’t have much of a resistance to the floor.

After creating the third spear had been formed I got in on the action and started scrambling to kill all the insects as well.

After what felt like hours of bombardment it became noticeably harder to move around as the insects started to fill the cave.“Move them to the side!” I shout, as I start kicking the insects to the side as if I’m in a flooded room.

“Cameron make some room!” I shout

Cameron goes up to the wall and starts pushing the walls with all his might, expanding the room and lowering the water level of the insects.

The cleaner room allowed us to move more swiftly around the cave, so we weren’t just swimming through insects.

“GUYS STICK YOUR SPEARS THROUGH THE HOLES BEFORE MORE COME IN!” I Shout.

We all scrambled to the front of the cave where the bombarding had been occurring. I hold my spear through one of the holes, but as a ghost fly runs through my spear, my spear slides down my hands despite my firm grip, causing me to yelp out in pain as my hand gets covered in splinters and friction burns.

I’m forced to let go of my spear and tightly grip my hand as I breathe through my teeth. “Shit!” I say through the pain.

“Don’t do what I did!” I shout, as I grab my spear again and smash the spear into the ground aligned with the hole in the wall in hopes it will automatically kill the flies.

The first fly that gets pierced pushes the spear further into the further stabilizing the spear.

Holy shit this might work! I internally exclaim “guy-” I’m interrupted, as several other ghosts flies ram into my spear making it shatter into hundreds of pieces under pressure.

I immediately cover my head from the explosion of wooden shards.

“Cameron I need another spearhead!” I shout

Cameron looked at me he was on his knees he was completely out of breath. It didn’t require him to say anything for me to realize I wasn’t getting that spearhead.I glanced at Oliver, he was frantically swinging his spear at the insects that came in, he kept trying to keep them at a distance, his eyes were wide, and his breathing was heavy. It was obvious that he was barely hanging on.

Fuck, both of them are almost out of it, and to be honest, so am I.

I look towards the wall. There is one thing I can imagine working but I'm going to need Cameron.

“Cameron give me your spear! Go rest in the back!” I shout, “I’m going to need you for something else soon!”

“You’re going to work me to the death” Cameron sighs, as he passes me his spear and heads to the back of the cave where my wife is.

Now I just need to hold out for a while I think to myself, as I pierce another insect.

After another few minutes, Oliver and I had been practically wasted. However, Cameron had enough time to rest.

“Cameron! Twist the holes closed, so the wall will kill the bugs!” I shout

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

“We’re going to suffocate!” Oliver protests

“Cameron can just poke holes through the wall!”

With the plan having been said, all that came afterward was just executing it. Cameron got up and then started swimming through more and more of the insects, towards the entrance.

“Protect Cameron!” I shout towards Oliver, as Oliver and I cover Cameron’s sides.

Several ghostflies were crawling on top of the pool of comrades' corpses. I notice a ghost fly jump towards me from the corner of my eye. I swing my spear against the fly smashing it against the wall, the tip of my spear getting launched out of my spear and getting lost within the piles of flies.

Wow, now I have a glorified stick… this is great…

I poked the second insect that was coming towards us with unsurprisingly no effect.

The only real way I could get merit out of my glorified stick was if I could smash the ghost flies against the walls, which was an unreliable strategy because swinging a spear like that is a bit clumsy and the cave is too small for that. It would honestly be better if I just use my hands.

Y’know what, fuck it.

I ditch the spear and push through the pool of insects before I grab the ghostfly I had been poking earlier. After I had the fly in my hand I thrust my hand through its white blood sack, causing it to squeal out in pain as the white blood sprayed all over me. It didn’t change much we all had a bunch of white blood on us.

Cameron had finally reached the front of the cave and had started working on trying to seal the cave.

“AGH FUCK!” Cameron wails, as a ghostfly flies through the hole piercing his hand. It had gotten lodged into his hand as he was still trying to close the other hole “GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF QUICK!” he started to cry.

Holy fuck I gulp.

“Cameron listen to me you're going to lose too much blood if we take it out of you right now,” I try to say as calmly as I can.

“BRANDON I’M NOT GOING TO KEEP A FUCKING GIANT ASS LIVING FLYING RHINOCEROS BEETLE FROM ANOTHER GODDAMN PLANET IN MY FUCKING HAND FOR THE REST OF THE DAY! TAKE IT THE FUCK OUT!” He screams.

“Cameron I’m sorry but just deal with it for n-”

Before I can even think of my next move Oliver comes and swiftly lodges out the bug and throws it to the wall before stabbing it with his spear.

“Honestly it would’ve been better for him to deal with blood loss rather than that terror!” Oliver says raising his voice over the clacking of the ghost flies, as he shakes his head in disgust.

“OLIVER WHAT THE FUCK! HE’S GOING TO FUCKING DIE NOW YOU DUMBASS!” I shout

Cameron nods his head towards Oliver.“WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SO HAPPY ABOUT! YOU'RE GOING TO BLEED OUT!”

“I’ll be fine!” Cameron says, closing the second hole

Fucking idiot, I think to myself, as I rip a part of my shirt.

“Here, give me your hand.”

I quickly wrap my ripped shirt around his hand.

“Wow, no ethanol? No ointment? You’re a horrible doctor” Cameron tries to grin through the pain.

“Sorry, son just put some spit on it and walk it off next time” I pull tightly.

“haa-agh” Cameron mixes a noise of laughing and pain.

“I’ll close the last hole,” Cameron says as he twists the last hole closed, falling into the pile of insects in exhaustion.

“This is fucken disgusting,” he says

“THERES STILL MORE!” Emila screams, making me immediately shoot a glance in her direction. A living insect was limping toward her.

I immediately started rushing and pushing through the pool of insects as fast as I could. The ghostfly was about to jump her, but I grabbed it before it could, Spreading out my fingers so they wouldn’t get pierced by the ghostfly’s serrated horn.

After I had the fly in my hands I started smashing it against the wall repeatedly. After I had finished it hardly had any resemblance to its previous form.

I look back to see a few other flies their wispy wings and glowing blood sacs helping to illuminate them in the darkness.

I throw the ghostfly within my hands at another one of the flies, flipping it over on its back. I push through the ghostflies, grabbing my target, and I use extra strength to push my fingers through the weaker underbelly of the ghostfly. I could feel all the blood drizzling down my hands, as my clenched hand grabbed something organic.

I pull out my hand from the ghost fly pulling out intestines covered in white blood. However, As I did that, I grunt as I felt a sharp pain in my back. I looked back to see a ghostfly had barely lodged itself into my upper back.

I buckle and move forward to remove the fly before I turn around and smash the fly I had in my hands against the fly that had hit me in the back, leaving me with only the intestines in my hand.

I toss the intestines away as I walk toward the last of the ghost flies. The ghost fly tried to jump at me, but I just dodged, grabbing its back and turning, smashing its belly against the wall. I kept it pinned against the wall, as I put my fingers under a chitin plate, where the wispy white wings were originating from, and I ripped off its chitin plate making the ghostfly writhe in pain, as its right wing explodes in a blaze of white wisps. However, I wasn’t done, as I did the same to its left wing, resulting in the same reaction. After removing the two wing plates I notice another back plate covering the entire back. I put my fingers between the head and the back plate, making the fly fight with all its might. I ignore the fly’s struggle and pry off the entire backplate, killing the fly.

I start trying to catch my breath, after having killed all the ghost flies.

After the white blaze dissipated, I glanced at Oliver, Cameron, and Emilia. They were all looking at me, their eyes were wide, mouths gaped open. I couldn’t tell if it was the expression of awe or fear.

I was scared it was the former.

I gulp through my heavy breaths “Poke some holes in the wall,” I shakily point toward Cameron.

“I kind of don’t want to,” Cameron says making me glare daggers at him.

“I might lose a finger,” he says explaining it all.

Shit what now, I push my back against the wall breathing. I can’t tell how much time we have, but I don’t think an hour or two is a bad estimate.

“Let's just catch our breaths for now,” I say, causing everyone to immediately relax.

I got an hour to think of a plan, hmm.

So what do we have with us right now? Spears, water powers, earth powers, plant powers, and I don’t know what kind of powers from Emilia. Hmm,

“Cameron” I mention Cameron, Cameron looks at me slowly seemingly unwilling to do any more work.

“What’s new?” Cameron asks

“Can you dig underground and poke holes from above?” I ask

“Absolutely Not, I refuse,” Cameron says flatly

“Why not?” I ask a bit irritated

“Brandon I don’t have that kind of stamina and I’ll suffocate in a wave of insects. It’s not exactly how I want to die,” he says blankly.

So, that’s not going to work.

“Oliver,” I say, causing Oliver to glance at me

“Can poke holes through the wall?” I ask

Oliver gets up from his pile of insects and thrusts his hand against the wall, making him recoil, letting go of his spear. “Shit” he curses, as he goes to retrieve his spear.

“Umm, Brandon,” Oliver says nervously.

“What's wrong?” I ask

“My spear is broken”

Well fuck

“Oliver, how long will it be before those flies leave?”

“They’ll be here till morning,” he says.

Yeah, I have no idea what to do here.

I hold my side that was cut earlier, we might just die here. Not because of a mythical monster but because of a lack of oxygen. funny.

I glance at my wife, yeah no, that's not happening.

“You guys have any ideas. You too Emilia?”

Cameron shakes his hand off, and Oliver just shakes his head.

“So we just need to last till morning?” Emilia asks.

“Yeah, why?” Oliver asks

“And the main issue is oxygen right?” Emilia asks

“Yeah?” I say

“Then why don’t we just create some plants in here?” she asks

“Well, plants need sun-” OH SHIT WE HAVE SUPER POWERS I FORGOT.

“EMILIA MY BRILLIANT WIFE, OUR BRILLIANT!” I exclaim making her blush.

“Oli pass me a fruit” I eagerly say

He passes me a purple-yellowish pear-like fruit, which I catch out of the air.

I focus on making the seed grow into a plant, and once the seed sprouts into a plant, I place the plant into a pile of insects.

“You think these guys will be good nourishment?” I ask, “Guess we’ll find out.” Cameron says

I started putting all my energy into the plant and watched as it began to start to slowly grow little by little, as it reached the height of a medium-large size house plant.I start gasping for air, having used all my energy.

“That's what I call green thumb!” I laugh.

“Umm I don’t think that can produce enough oxygen for 4 people,” Cameron says.

“It’s fine every time I make it grow it produces a chunk of oxygen, so I just gotta catch my breath and I'll do it again,” I smile.

“How do you know?” Cameron asks.

“I just do I guess” I shrug.

“Fair enough” he shrugs

The next few hours we were just sitting in the cave not talking about much, we were just listening to the sound of the insects smashing into the thick cave wall, like it was heavy rain falling onto a car.

“Y’know this might’ve been nice if there was some music to go along with this ambiance,” Cameron says.

“Oh yeah?” I smile slightly, “hanging out in a pool of insects listening to otherworldly insects attempt to smash through our cave wall to attempt to take your life would be nicer if you had music?” I huff a slight laugh

“Well, yeah,” Cameron says, “everything is better with music,”

“Y’know what here lemme prove it to you,” Cameron says.

Cameron then starts to hum some Lofi beats. After a few minutes, Oli joined in on the humming, then Emilia, and after that, I finally joined in.

We had started mixing the songs, we would do Hymes, shanties, rap songs, popular songs, and anything we felt like singing, it was probably more fun than it should’ve been.

I especially loved when Emilia would sing, her voice was extremely versatile. Her voice always had power in it, but she could always put dynamics into her voice to fit the song she was singing, and could always reach the notes that she needed to reach. No note was out of her reach. Her singing ability was truly remarkable. I’ve always loved her singing even back home on earth.

I don’t know what it was, maybe it was the music, but the rest of the hours that we were in that cave felt much shorter than it should’ve been.

The pounding on the wall had started to slow until it had finally ceased, we all went quiet trying to decide whether we should go or stay for a while longer.

“Let's stay for a few more minutes before we leave,” I suggest.

“Alright,” everyone agrees, and after a few minutes just like I said we were free.
