From the scattered thoughts of her scouts Thea could tell they would reach them in minutes, how they got so close without them knowing she could not imagine. She had to get the brood to safety or this would all be for nothing.

“The portal!” she shouted in an only somewhat panicked voice.

“We have to get the brood to safety; all resources will go towards protecting the brood and portal.” She said in a calmer voice as she hurriedly tucked the eggs in a specialized pouch and began growing veins connecting her to her dear eggs, she quickly began filling their food supplies and practically shoving more knowledge through there mental link. She could feel the eggs respond, eagerly siphoning all they could. As she did this, she began hurriedly floating towards the still closed portal, she could now feel the human ships her biological radar pinging them from all angles, there were hundreds no thousands of them!

“Hurry! open the portal and ready the defences!” she shouted thoroughly panicked, since when did the humans have this many ships to send at them? The most they had sent before were hundred and even then, that wasn’t at her colony.

At here words and clear panic the colony spurred to life drones of all types began circling her and the portal in a protective shield that looked more like a tornado than thousands of furious drones. Each snapping and clacking in clear threatening movements that said to any onlooker to stay far far away or suffer the consequences.

At this point the ships had reached them sleek with ships lased with silver and gold, they would look beautiful if they weren’t armed to the teeth with weapons specifically designed to kill them. The moment they got close she saw thousands of weapons open fire, some she knew others she hoped she wouldn’t. as she flew ever quicker to the almost ready portal something cut past her defenses and pierced straight into her.

Ahh! That was too close for comfort, if it was just a few tens of meters to the right it would have hit the brood.

Her efforts redoubled as she attempted to regenerate the damage but something was of. “I can’t heal it!” something was stopping here from healing, actually she could feel the wound worsening every moment, the area near the damage had gone numb and unresponsive.

At the sight of there queen harmed the drones went into a frenzy tearing into the human ships with more vigor than before, but it wasn’t enough she knew the all knew but they needed to buy her time to reach the portal, she was only a body length away now. Suddenly she felt the world go white as she was overwhelmed with pain, “ahh!”, four more shots had hit her in vital areas, one was close to what might be considered a spine. She pushed back against the darkness all she could limping her way towards the portal which had been heavily attacked but still active, hoping against hope that she would make it.

Thea could feel her life draining and as the world darkened, she shot the brood out with all her remaining might she immediately felt a pang as two clutches were shot but one managed to get through though it had been grazed, she smiled.

“We did it.” Was all she managed to think before her world darkened once more.
