Chapter 5: Outside

Chapter 5: Outside

She was running as fast as she could, they hadn’t spotted her at first but she could tell something was of as they all slowed, then they all turned towards her holding weapons and looking ready to fight! She threw the rock she was holding on to as a distraction and ran, surprisingly they hadn’t followed. Her legs were burning but she could see the light at the end of the tunnel, pun intended.

“Please let there be no humans outside, please let there be no humans outside.” She repeated as she reached the end of the tunnel. As her eyes adjusted to the light she took in her surroundings, “…huh.”. she looked around her she was assaulted by colors, sounds and smells she had never encountered in her relatively short life.

Large trees loomed high above basking in the beautiful starry sky, at their base lay large roots anchoring them to the grassy landscape. Bright green grass covered the ground as far as she could see small ferns and berry bushes dotted around the area, along with the plants she could see many small bugs and lizards around her as well as the sounds of many larger animals farther away.

“This looks like a scene from a human ‘nature documentary’! the life here t incredible! The diversity alone was like nothing the swarm had seen in any place other than terra!” as she looked around here in aw, she suddenly remembered how she got here and hurriedly continued to scuttle along avoiding any thing that seemed dangerous or unknown, which was most things she could see.

After another hour of walking, she finally collapsed to the ground, “I’m starving!” she groaned as she looked around for anything that looked edible until she paused on what looked like a rather small snake, “come here you overgrown worm!” she roared as she left at it with new found strength. As she tried to pin it down with her deceptively sharp legs it kept squirming around her even crawling over her carapace at times, that was until she remembered her new tail, “skree!” it screeched as the blade cut through it killing it, “hah! A snake is just a bag of throat!” she said in a slightly crazed manner before falling over from exhaustion right next to it.

After a few failed attempts at biting a part of due to her exhaustion and the creatures surprisingly hard endoskeleton she decided to eat it like ‘spaghetti’ by syphoning more in her mouth and swallowing it whole, sighing in content she fell unconscious then and there.

When she awoke, she realized the previously starry sky had been replaced by a bright blue sky, after a few moments to shake of the grogginess she realized something “that was so Dum! The humans or animals or anything could have just walked up and attacked me!” she quickly checked her surroundings for anything that looked dangerous before calming down.

“Now then, I’m relatively safe for the moment and (hopefully) aren’t in any danger I should probably decide on what to do for now. Alright what do I know, I’m likely the last surviving member of the swarm, I am in a completely new universe and yet have encountered humans and I have to somehow restart the entire swarm on an inhabited planet filled with (probably hostile but I didn’t want to take any chances) humans. Great.” She clacked her claws in frustration both at her situation and the fact that she was still having a hard time catching the weird worm snakes as she thought.

“First things first I have absolutely no hope of restarting the hive in my current tiny form so first up is getting bigger and stronger, second step is getting a hang of controlling my ‘shape shifting’ ability or whatever the name was. That way I can actually defend myself from humans and any other threat this world has long enough to have at least decent odds.” She began hunting the snakes with renewed vigor only sometimes tripping as one or two got under her legs or nipped at her carapace.

Thea was floating around the little drone’s general vicinity having recently learned that there one way connection seems to also transfer her general location she decided to look around this strange and beautiful land. When she first saw this area, she thought she had somehow ended up back on earth but the wildlife had changed her mind. Currently she was observing the little drone eating some worm looking snakes (or snake looking worms she couldn’t tell).

“Hmm I should probably name her; I can’t keep thinking of her as ‘little drone’ forever.”

“…how about ‘Mira’ short for miracle. That does have a nice ring to it, alright from now on you shall be named Mira.” She said to the little drone in a mock conversation she had been doing out of (relative considering their circumstances) boredom during Mira’s sleep since she didn’t need to.
