Candles: The Lost Witch
So, what’s next?

So, what’s next?

“ I don’t mean to force you. I just wanted you to help me while you search for your memories,” Amethyst quickly added.

To search for my lost memories, right, I’ve completely forgotten that. I was so distracted that I’ve lost my original goal.

“It looks like you haven’t thought of the future at all,” Amethyst said, judging from my silence. “ You don’t have a goal or perhaps you’ve forgotten.” She sat up, looking straight into my eyes. “ The future is as murky as mud. Your only guide is your goal. It will be your compass. The faster you have one the better.” The look in her eyes was of concern. “It’s alright if you change it later on, what matters is that your goal should be clear as crystal. So tell me what your goal is?”

I jumped at her sudden change of tone, it was like that of a drill sergeant, loud and clear. “ I will search for my memories,” I said. Yet, it was as if she could hear uncertainty, she asked louder this time, “what is your goal?”

We repeated this process three to four times. In the end, we were shouting at the top of our lungs. My heart was beating so intensely from all the shouting, I could feel it bumping into my rib cage. Amethyst took me for a walk, the Digestion Walk, she called it. We were still in a garden, but this time the trees were less dense. Eventually, we walked into a grassland. We sat and stared at the sky. The sky was dark blue. The sun was there, its light shone dimly. It was like staring at the moon.

As I sat down, I could feel my eyelids drooping down, I was getting sleeping. As if she noticed it, Amethyst made me lay down, Stroking my hair softly. “Did you know,” she said in a soft voice,” I was searching for someone to help me, but there wasn’t even a suitable candidate. They all lacked in some way. I needed someone not faithful to the gods. Someone who won’t stray away from their path. More importantly, someone kind and compassionate. You are the best candidate. While you may forget your goal, you’ll find it eventually. You are kind, you are the first one to comfort me. I am sorry if you feel like you’re being used, but I’ll be sure to help you as much as possible to achieve your goal.

Amethyst was pouring her heart out. I didn’t really mind if I’m being used. I considered Amethyst as a friend or maybe even more. But something was wrong, she forgot a crucial point.

“ What if I change?” I asked, “ What if I’m no longer the same in the future?”

“ I consider you as my friend. If you change, I will still support you. You have reasons to do so. You won’t do anything unreasonable, will you?” She said nonchalantly.

“ I suppose I won’t.” I replied with uncertainty. There are so many unknown things, how can I be sure?

“ If you happen to lose your mind. I will help bring back your sanity.” She said, she was relaxed but I could hear the determination in it.

“ Well, I will make sure that I don’t go insane.” I said, smiling to myself, knowing that I have one person I could count on, before falling asleep. The silence was relaxing, nobody could interrupt us in this grassland.

It was time for our goodbyes, although it was time for me to leave, deep in my heart, I knew this won’t be the last time I see her. There were no tears, but Amethyst held my hands tightly “ Remember,” she said, “ you have my blessing and support. Don’t hesitate to call for me.” “ But how?” I asked. “ You’ll know when the time comes. Oh and think twice before trusting anyone.” She said, smiling one last time before letting go of my hands. “ Good luck, my dear.” A blinding light surrounded me. The next thing I knew, I was back at the accident site.

I’m in so much trouble, I thought to myself. I’ve totally forgotten about living ice sculptures. I looked around me, there was luckily no sign of them. It was just white snow. There was something in my hand, It was a necklace. It was tear-shaped, the tear was made of a transparent crystal. It was light. Next to it was a note. It wrote,“ Use it as a lucky charm, and don’t forget your goal, Amethyst.” I chuckled, it wasn’t even a minute since I left her. I put on the necklace and was ready to set out in high spirits.

I’m lost, I was all high and mighty a moment ago, and now I’m sitting on a stone, pondering which direction I should go. It didn’t matter which way I go, I’m off trail. And there was no sign of people at all. I wondered, will it be good for me to meet any person. There was no use thinking of that, It’s not like I’ll meet anyone soon. I got up and decided to go right every turn I saw or straight if possible. I just preferred right over left.

The snow had gotten thinner, it was much easier to walk now. I was walking straight in a forest. I was testing my luck, maybe I’ll be able to find some path that leads to a main road. I listened keenly to every sound. I could hear footsteps but not of humans. It came from a herd of deer some distance from me.

There were five deer. Among them was a fawn. It was small and adorable, I felt like I could stare at it for the rest of the day. It must still be very young, but why would there be a fawn this young in winter? I thought deer mate in summer or spring. I looked around, the snow was no more, everything was green. It was like I walked out of a dream. Did I just witness a miracle?

There was suddenly a whistle. A thump broke my thought, my eyes returned to the deer. One of them was down, the others were fleeing. I could hear hoofs. Soon after, people on horseback came. There were five of them, one of them was surrounded by the others. I guess he was someone important. They were carrying bows and arrows.

There were people at last, but I couldn’t bring myself to meet them. My body was still as stone, I didn’t dare to move, nor make a sound. My guts were screaming that these people meant trouble.

“ Sir, you have such good aim.” One of the guards, I assumed, said. The man in the centre got down from his horse and put the dead deer on his horse. His eyes briefly stared at my direction. Without another word, he got on his horse and rode away, his guards quickly followed him.

The man was cold, I could feel the air around him freezing. His eyes left an impression on me, it was like it could cut. I felt chills down my spine when he looked at me. Did he see me? I was hiding behind a boulder. I wish I didn't have to deal with them.
