Chapter 22: The Fearsome Florist.

In the confines of The Forsaken Crypt's dungeon core chamber, Eddie 'Bones' Malone was hunched over the glowing interface of the Dungeon Core, while Argenti, his aide, perused a collection of old scrolls and books. The air was thick with the musty scent of old paper, mixed with the faint, electrical buzz emanating from the holographic screens.

"So, this is what it's come to, huh?" Eddie mused aloud, a grin playing on his skeletal features. "Eddie 'Bones' Malone, former thug, now flipping through magical plant catalogs."

Argenti, with his sharp, demonic features softened by concentration, looked up from a particularly ornate scroll. " Eddie, the knowledge in these records could be invaluable. They contain information on local flora and fauna that might be suitable for the dungeon."

Eddie tapped on the Dungeon Core's interface, bringing up a status screen. "Like this 'Gloom Fern' here. It sounds like some haunted salad."

Only Eddie examined the details that floated in the air before him:

[Status Screen: Gloom Fern]

Type: Common

Description: A shadowy fern that thrives in low light. Often found in haunted groves.

Magical Properties: Emits a faint, eerie glow. Known to induce mild unease in humans.

"Indeed," Argenti replied, peering over Eddie's shoulder, though unable to see the floating text. "Gloom Ferns are known for their unsettling presence.”

Eddie chuckled. "Back in my day, the only plants I cared about were the ones that got me in trouble with the cops.”

He then flicked through the Core's interface, stopping at another entry. "What about this one, Argenti? 'Sparkbloom'? That name's got a bit of a kick to it."

As Eddie read out the details, Argenti consulted his scrolls for additional information:

[Status Screen: Sparkbloom]

Type: Common

Description: A vibrant flower that crackles with static energy.

Magical Properties: Generates a small electrical charge. Can be used in basic enchantments or as a natural deterrent.

"Sparkbloom," Argenti mused, his eyes lighting up. "A visually striking plant, and its electrical properties could be useful for defense."

Eddie nodded, "Sounds like nature's own security system. But hey, do these things need special care? Or do we just stick 'em in the ground and see what happens?"

Argenti flipped through the book. "Each species has specific requirements, Eddie. For example, Sparkbloom prefers mineral-rich soil and an environment with static energy."

"Static energy, huh?" Eddie said. "That may be troublesome, me and Spellbone only know fire magic, although he has the potential to learn other types.”

Continuing their search, Eddie's attention was caught by another plant. "Hey, this one's pretty wild: 'Whispering Willow'. It says here it can mimic speech."

[Status Screen: Whispering Willow]

Type: Uncommon

Description: A rare willow with leaves that rustle in a way that mimics speech.

Magical Properties: Known to whisper secrets and ancient lore. Popular among mystics and scholars.

"Talking trees, electric flowers, and eerie ferns," Eddie mused, his bony fingers tapping rhythmically on the interface.

After their thorough research session, Eddie and Argenti moved to a specially prepared section of The Forsaken Crypt. The soil here was damp and rich, a stark contrast to the usual bone-dry floors of the dungeon after Eddie had disabled the Rainforest feature, he had purchased awhile back. In Eddie's hand was a small, unassuming seed – the first of their new botanical ventures: Waterwheat.

"Okay, Waterwheat, let's see if you're as easy to handle as a switchblade," Eddie remarked, eyeing the tiny seed with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. He carefully made a small hole in the soil, his skeletal fingers surprisingly gentle.

As he placed the seed into the earth, he couldn't help but quip, "Who knew planting a seed would be so hard. In my old life, the only thing I planted was evidence."

Argenti watched with an amused expression, his demonic features softening into a smile. "It's quite a change of pace for you, Eddie. Fire magic could be said to be the opposite of plant-keeping."

Eddie straightened up, wiping imaginary dirt from his bony hands. "Yeah, well, let's see if this green thumb thing is all it's cracked up to be."

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

At that moment, the Dungeon Core interface flashed with a new notification:

[Status Screen: Waterwheat]

Type: Common

Description: A versatile plant used in various potions. Thrives near water sources.

Magical Properties: Mildly enhances liquid-based concoctions.

"Alright, it's in the system now," Eddie announced, reading the screen. "Says here it's a common type, good for potions. Guess we're back in the alchemy business now, too." Causing Argenti to nod in agreement.

Eddie leaned closer to the newly planted seed, as if expecting it to do a trick. "So, when do we see some action? I'm not the most patient guy, you know."

Argenti chuckled. "Plants require time to grow, Eddie."

"Yeah, yeah," Eddie waved off the comment. "In the meantime, I guess we'll just have to 'watch the grass grow.' Never thought I'd say that."

As they stood there, the early stages of The Forsaken Crypt's transformation into a more vibrant, living ecosystem began to take shape. Eddie, for all his rough edges and underworld experience, found himself oddly intrigued by the prospect of nurturing something for a change.

"Who knows, Argenti," Eddie mused, a smirk playing across his skeletal face. "Maybe I'll end up as the first skeleton with a green thumb. Or, you know, a green bone."

As Eddie and Argenti stepped back from the newly planted Waterwheat, the Dungeon Core interface suddenly lit up with a series of notifications, causing Eddie to raise an eyebrow in surprise.

"Hey, check this out, Argenti!" Eddie exclaimed as he read the notifications aloud:

[System Notification: New Feature Unlocked - Botanical Management Interface]

Manage your dungeon's flora with precision! Track growth, magical properties, and environmental needs.

[Achievement Unlocked: Green Thumb Initiate]

Congratulations on planting your first magical flora! Reward: Basic Botanical Guide and 100 Mana Points.

Eddie's eyes widened at the mention of the mana points. "Now that's what I'm talking about! More mana means more training. I might not have hit a mana wall yet, but hey, I'm not complaining about the extra juice."

Argenti nodded, equally pleased. "It's an excellent development, Eddie. The additional mana could be quite beneficial for your spell practices."

Eddie tapped into the new Botanical Management Interface, his curiosity piqued. The screen displayed a complex array of settings and information about the dungeon's plant life. Moisture levels, temperature settings, and magical nourishment requirements were all laid out in intricate detail.

"Whoa, this is some next-level gardening," Eddie remarked, scrolling through the interface. "Here I thought you just stick 'em in the ground and let nature do its thing. But this? This is like... plant science."

Argenti leaned over to glance at the interface. "It seems the system allows for very precise control over the dungeon's ecosystem."

Eddie chuckled, a bit overwhelmed by the complexity. "Man, I used to think a green thumb just meant not killing a houseplant. Now I've got to be a botanist wizard or something."

As he explored the interface further, Eddie discovered settings for automating certain aspects of plant care. "Well, at least I don't have to do everything manually. Looks like I can set some of this on autopilot."

"Indeed, automation will allow you to focus on other aspects of dungeon management," Argenti added. "But understanding the basics will still be beneficial."

Eddie nodded, his skeletal fingers tapping on the interface. "Alright, let's see. We've got auto-watering, temperature regulation, nutrient distribution... man, this is like running a high-tech greenhouse."

Auto-watering system: 150 credits per plant.

Temperature regulation: 200 credits per plant.

Nutrient distribution system: 175 credits per plant.

Magical nourishment enhancer: 225 credits pet plant.

He pursed his bony lips, weighing his options. "Alright, we'll start with the essentials. Auto-watering system for 150 credits and the basic temperature regulation for 200. That's 350 credits down, but it should give us a solid start."

As he confirmed the purchases, the credits deducted from his account, Eddie felt a mix of excitement and fiscal pain. "There goes a decent chunk of my stash. These plants better be worth their weight in gold... or credits, at least."

Argenti offered a nod of approval. "A judicious choice, Eddie. Automated watering and temperature control will ensure the Waterwheat's growth, without stretching your resources too thin."

Eddie's face lit up a bit as he remembered the recent mana point gain. "Yeah, and let's not forget that nice mana bump from the achievement. Makes the sting of spending those credits a bit less harsh."

With a few more taps, Eddie finalized the setup for the Waterwheat's care. The auto-watering and temperature systems activated, their subtle hum filling the chamber with a sense of life and growth.

"Okay, that should do it," Eddie declared with a satisfied nod. "Our Waterwheat's got the VIP treatment now. Only the best for our dungeon's first magical plant."

Argenti chuckled at Eddie's enthusiasm. "Indeed, Eddie. You're adapting quite well to this new aspect of dungeon management."

Eddie stepped back, admiring their handiwork.

Eddie's skull seemed to light up at the possibilities. "Yeah, and it's not just about the traps and monsters anymore. It's about creating a whole living, breathing ecosystem. This could be big, Argenti. Really big."

Argenti nodded, a smile playing on his demonic features. "It is a significant undertaking, Eddie. But with your vision and determination, it is certainly within reach."

Eddie stopped, his gaze distant yet filled with a newfound purpose. "I gotta say, when I first got thrown into this dungeon gig, I thought it was all about scaring the pants off adventurers and earning credits. But now, I think I got some new ideas."

The dungeon master and his demonic aide began to walk back to the core chamber, their steps echoing in the quiet corridors. Eddie's mind was abuzz with ideas, each more grandiose than the last.

As they reached the core, Eddie let out a chuckle, the sound echoing off the stone walls. "Can you imagine what the boys back in the gang would say if they saw me now? Eddie 'Bones' Malone, the fearsome florist. They'd never let me live it down."

Argenti laughed, resonant, joyful sound that filled the chamber.

Eddie grinned, his skeletal fingers tapping against his skull. "But Argenti, let them laugh. We'll be the ones having the last laugh when The Forsaken Crypt becomes the most talked-about dungeon in the underworld."
