Chapter 12: Training the Skeleton Crew.

Lost in thought about his next moves, Eddie barely noticed Argenti approaching until the demon spoke.

"Eddie, in the demon realm and other places, dungeons typically advance in rank and power through various means," Argenti began, his voice thoughtful. "It's not just about internal growth. External factors play a significant role too."

Eddie turned, intrigued. "External factors? Like what?"

Argenti hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "Well, there are other dungeon masters out there. Each dungeon is unique, and when it forms, a master is often created with it. The great Demon King of old lore, for example, was a dungeon master himself. He transformed his dungeon into a massive, formidable castle."

Eddie's jaw, if it could, would have dropped. "Wait, there are other dungeon masters? And they compete with each other?"

"Yes," Argenti nodded. "Dungeon masters sometimes vie for resources. It's not unheard of for a dungeon master to raid another's dungeon, absorbing the pure energy from its core. Such an act can destroy the raided dungeon while significantly upgrading the raider's own core."

Eddie processed this information, his mind racing with the implications. "So, what you're saying is, we're not just managing our own little crypt here. There's a bigger game at play?"

"Precisely," Argenti confirmed. "Your dungeon could potentially become a target for others seeking to expand their power. And conversely, you could grow your own power by similar means, though it is a path fraught with peril."

Eddie pondered this new revelation. The idea of competing with other dungeon masters was both daunting and exhilarating. It opened up a world of possibilities he hadn't considered before.

"We need to be prepared then, both for defense and maybe... just maybe, a little offense," Eddie mused, a sly grin forming on his skeletal face. "But first things first, we gotta beef up The Forsaken Crypt. Make it a place no one in their right mind would want to mess with."

Argenti nodded in agreement. "And perhaps seek out allies, both within and outside of the dungeon realms. The more you know about your fellow dungeon masters and their domains, the better prepared you will be."

Eddie clapped his bony hand on Argenti's shoulder. "Argenti, you're full of good ideas. I'm glad you're on my side. Let's start by expanding our knowledge of the surrounding lands and dungeons. Knowledge is power, after all."

Eddie 'Bones' Malone, his mind now set on a new strategy, turned to Argenti with a determined look in his eye sockets. "Argenti, I need you to head out and gather some intel. Find out what you can about the other dungeons, their masters, and anything else that might help us stay ahead in this game."

Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.

Argenti nodded, understanding the gravity of the task. "I'll do my best, Eddie. I can move through the forest undetected and gather information from the nearby villages and travelers."

"Good man," Eddie said, clapping Argenti on the back. "And while you're at it, spread the word about The Forsaken Crypt. Let the low-level adventurers know there's a new dungeon in town. We could use the credits, and I wouldn’t mind completing a few of those achievements."

Argenti grinned, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. "Consider it done. They'll be lining up to test their mettle against your traps and magic."

With their plan in place, Argenti set out on his mission. Eddie watched him leave, feeling a sense of anticipation. This was more than just a quest for information; it was an opportunity to establish The Forsaken Crypt as a formidable presence in the world of dungeons.

In Argenti's absence, Eddie turned his attention to preparing the dungeon. He reviewed the list of achievements again, selecting those he could feasibly complete with an influx of low-level adventurers.

"Trap Master" Achievement: Successfully ensnare 50 adventurers in traps.

"Fire Starter" Achievement: Use fire magic to defeat 30 adventurers.

With Jeeves and the rest of the skeleton crew at his disposal, Eddie set to work enhancing the traps and planning his use of fire magic. He wanted to make sure each encounter would not only contribute to his achievements but also be a learning experience for him and his crew.

Standing amidst his loyal skeleton crew, a look of determination on his skull. Today, he was not just their master but also their teacher. His plan: to turn this motley crew of bones into a formidable defense force.

"Alright, boys, listen up!" Eddie clapped his bony hands together, gathering the attention of the skeletons. "We've got adventurers coming, and we're gonna be ready for 'em. It's training time!"

The skeletons, silent as ever, lined up in front of Eddie. He had names for each of them, a way to give them character, to make them more than just minions. Today's first lesson was with Bonehead, a skeleton whose skull was slightly askew, giving it a perpetually confused look.

"Eddie to Bonehead, come in, Bonehead," Eddie beckoned the skeleton forward. "You're up first. Let's work on trap setting."

He led Bonehead to a corridor rigged with a series of swinging axes. The trap was simple enough: a pressure plate that, when stepped on, would release the deadly blades.

"Okay, Bonehead, I want you to reset this trap. Watch me first," Eddie demonstrated, carefully setting the axes back into their initial position and rearming the pressure plate. "Now, you try."

Bonehead stepped forward, its movements awkward and jerky. It fumbled with the axes, accidentally releasing them prematurely, causing Eddie to dodge swiftly.

"Whoa, Bonehead! Easy there!" Eddie exclaimed, jumping out of the path of the swinging axes. "Let's try that again, but maybe with a bit less... enthusiasm."

Bonehead tried again, its bony fingers trembling slightly. This time, it managed to set the trap, but in its final move, it stepped on the pressure plate itself, triggering the axes once more.

Eddie, who had stepped back to observe, couldn't help but burst into laughter. "Bonehead, you're living up to your name, buddy. But it's all good. Practice makes perfect."

After several more attempts, and with Eddie's patient guidance, Bonehead finally got the hang of it. The axes swung harmlessly as the skeleton stepped away from the pressure plate, having successfully reset the trap.

"There you go! That's what I'm talking about," Eddie cheered, clapping as much as a skeleton could. "You're a natural, Bonehead. Well, sort of."

Energized by Bonehead's progress, Eddie moved on to the rest of the crew, each skeleton receiving personalized training. From trap setting to patrol routes, Eddie covered it all, his enthusiasm never waning.

As the day turned into night, the skeleton crew, under Eddie's tutelage, had improved significantly. They moved with more purpose and seemed more in tune with the dungeon's mechanisms.

Exhausted but satisfied, Eddie looked over his crew. "Boys, I'm proud of you all. You're gonna make this dungeon the toughest nut to crack."

The skeletons, in their silent way, seemed to stand a bit taller, ready to face whatever challenges the incoming adventurers would bring.

With the training session complete, Eddie retired to his quarters, his mind already racing with strategies for the next day. The Forsaken Crypt, with its newly trained skeleton crew, was more than just a lair; it was a fortress, and Eddie was its undisputed commander.
