Chapter 9: Fangs

“We should be arriving soon, wear this.” I said as I handed Toba an eyepatch and a bandit’s bandana.

I felt bad for Toba, but it couldn’t be helped. I was never one to care too much about what other’s think, but it would be better if our first impressions in town weren’t completely soiled by my brother looking like a zombie.

“… Is brother still mad?” He said as he pulled up the hood on his cloak after wearing the eyepatch and bandana.

“No… Sorry about that Toba, I got angry because we lost our things.”

How many years had it been since I was that angry? Ever since I was reincarnated, I managed to keep my anger in check. In fact, I even forgot I had temper issues in the first place.

When I realized that the tower was missing though… I got a little carried away.

A few days earlier:

“SHUT UP TOBA FOR FUCK’S SAKE.”

I had just lost a tower containing immeasurable value, I was in no mood for jokes.

“T- Toba does not understand.”

“Just shut up.”

“But brother, where is the to-” Toba’s words were cut off as I punched him in the face.

The punch sent him flying a few meters away. The force we were able to generate was far beyond our own weight, even though we were heavier than our height would suggest by earth standards.

“Do you have any idea what we just lost? Can you even begin to imagine how expensive all those books were? Did you pay any attention to Luna at all?” I said with an almost red face as I slowly walked towards Toba who was still on the ground.

My head felt like it would burst open from internal pressure, and my entire face was burning. It was a familiar feeling.

“I- I’m sorry brother.”

“What?” I glared at him and stopped walking.

“Toba doesn’t understand, Toba is sorry…”

“…”

“Brother don’t be angry, don’t leave me…” Toba had an extremely worried look on his face, not a hint of hostility towards me could be found.

“Shut up… Let’s go already.”

Back then, I was prepared for Toba to fight back. I didn’t even think I would win.

Since Toba didn’t divide his training as much as I did, he was slightly better at close quarters combat, not to mention his strength was much higher.

But I wanted to let off steam, I was infuriated. I couldn’t explain what happened and I didn’t have anyone to blame, so I turned to the only person I had.

I was wrong on everything though, Toba didn’t make that comment to joke around, he was just confused. Moreover, he didn’t fight back like I assumed he would, instead begging me to forgive him, even though he could probably beat me up.

In fact, that made me even angrier, but I couldn’t do anything about it, so for a long time we just rode in silence.

Eventually, however, I calmed down and realized I was being foolish.

There was nothing we could do about what we had lost, the value of our loss didn’t change this fact.

Every time I remembered all the spells, I wouldn’t be able to learn there, I got angry again, but at least rationally I understood that it was no use.

And so, I apologized.

“Did Toba do something wrong?”

“Sigh… You did nothing wrong, I was just being childish, and I took my anger out on you. I’m sorry.”

“Toba does not understand, but since brother isn’t angry anymore, it’s ok.”

I don’t deserve this ugly piece of shit, he’s the most innocent and pure person I ever met, how could I be angry at him?

Toba, I’ll treat you better I swear.

It didn’t take long for us to finally spot the first adventurer out in the woods.

“What in the world…” A skinny guy with a trimmed beard and leather armor looked at us in shock, for a moment he almost started reaching for his sword.

Sigh… I guess we really do stand out.

“Good afternoon, sir. We’re trying to get to Alport, is this the right direction?” Toba kept silent as instructed, letting me deal with the talking.

“Yes, it is… Who are you?” He eased up a little after hearing me talk, but he was clearly suspicious of us.

It was no surprise, however. Luna had instructed us previously that we would face some resistance because of our mixed race.

“I am Cona, and this is my brother Toba. We seek to start our adventuring career.”

“Sure… But how are you two ridding wolves? Can you cast Beast control already?”

Well, apparently the wolves are stranger than my green hair. I forgot about that detail.

“These wolves are actually our pets; we grew up with them, so they obey our commands.”

“Grew up with?”

“Sir, would you be so kind as to tell us if such pets are restricted in town?”

“Restricted? Hmm, you two will certainly draw attention, but as long as they don’t attack people it should be fine. Folks are used to rangers with animal companions, it’s just that… Well, usually it’s not kids who have them.” He said while scratching his chin, still trying to believe his eyes.

“Thank you. Come Toba, we should arrive anytime now.”

Ugh… Why do I have to speak like this? Luna instructed us to speak politely, but I feel like I’m larping…

Wait if I think about it as larping… Yeah, this is actually fun!

Loosing the tower put me in a sour mood and I almost forgot the reason I trained so hard to be an adventurer.

My main goal in this world was always to enjoy it! I was now in a world of fantasy, a real world where goofing around too much would only get me killed, but I was supposed to enjoy the small details, not get annoyed by them.

I can’t let myself get cranky; one small setback shouldn’t ruin what I have been dreaming about all this time!

The stubborn frown on my face collapsed and gave way to a smile.

As we distanced ourselves from the still dazed adventurer, I got my wolf closer to Toba and lightly slapped his back.

“It has finally begun!”

Toba probably didn’t understand, but he could see that I was no longer tensed up, and that made him relieved as well.

“Hm!”

A couple more adventurers passed by, all of them surprised by our sight, but we greeted them politely.

Soon, we saw the first house in the distance, and shortly after we could see the whole town.

The buildings were all painted white with blue rooftops, but they varied greatly in size and shape. The sea breeze that had been lightly hitting us since the day before was now much stronger, and coupled with the sounds of seagulls and the yellow sands opening up on our right between the now sparsely placed trees made for a complete port town picture.

In the distant beach bellow the town, dozens of red and blue creatures too far away to distinguish were moving about, most likely Shorelings and Giant crabs.

And in the ever-closer town, adventurers could be seen moving about with swords and shields that shone lightly against the retreating sun.

Very few of them had metal armor though, as expected from a beginner town.

Alport was a town occupied almost exclusively by adventurers just starting out, and the reason was both its location, and the gatekeeping done by the Expert adventurers hired by the guild.

If any strong monster dared to roam around in Porang region, in which both Alport and Dwarf Forest were located, they would be immediately hunted down and killed.

This, coupled with the favorable location that gave quick access to most types of low-rank monsters, as well as the varied shops and facilities that provided beginners with all their needs, made Alport a popular beginner town.

It was greatly outshadowed by Maris, the massive town northwest of Alport, but that wasn’t a place we could afford yet.

“Look, Toba! Completely different from the forest, right?”

“T- too big!” Toba’s eye widened and shone through the countless coverings he was wearing on his face; he was dressed like a bandit, but his size made the sight quite comical.

“Soon it will be too small for us, let’s go find a place to stay.”

We walked into town with no problems, it wasn’t a walled town, and the guards near the entrance didn’t stop us for anything.

I was kind of expecting some level of security, but then I remembered that 90% of the people walking around were basically monster killing machines, and although mostly rookies, they were more than capable of dealing with low rank monsters.

Speaking of them, people were a little surprised to see us walking around with two wolves at our side and armed to our teeth, but they mostly kept to themselves.

With a few exceptions, of course.

“Woah there! Those are some pretty big wolves you two have. Who’s the ranger that’s controlling them?” A skinny guy with an axe strapped to his waist stopped in front of us, seemingly worried about the situation.

“Good afternoon, sir. We have someone waiting for us at an inn, but I can’t remember which one. Knowing him, it should be a cheap one, can you point us to it?”

“Oh, it’s probably ‘The slutty slime’ then, just turn around that corner and keep walking, you’re not far. But be careful around those wolves, even with beast control they’re not 100% tamed.”

As he said that, he gestured towards me, and my wolf got a little agitated. As if to prove the adventurer’s point, I had to tighten the grip on its fur hold him back as he let a low growl.

If only he knew that the only thing keeping these wolves in check was our grip strength.

“Sure, thank you for the information.”

“Seriously, who uses kids like that to carry around their gear and beasts? This town is full of crazy people!” The adventurer mumbled to himself as we walked away.

“Brother, who are we meeting?”

“No one, don’t worry about it. I just lied so we could get there faster.”

“Hm.”

We were definitely drawing way too much attention, but if we somehow made it work, having mounts with us would be a huge help when travelling to and from missions.

It was worth it to try and keep them, but I had to properly watch them.

We arrived at the inn the axe wielding adventurer had unknowingly recommended to us.

So, I really heard it right that time… This place’s name…

The building was ok and seemed well kept, but the wood sign hanging in front of it was… Peculiar to say the least.

In the same medieval art style I was used to seeing in magic tomes, a “Slime girl” was depicted… And as if the fact that she was naked was not enough, she was pleasuring herself with her tentacles.

Seriously? I wait for all this time to finally arrive in this town and the first thing I see is hentai? And in broad daylight?

And monster girl hentai no less… If the art style wasn’t so comically bad, I might have had some problems down there.

Wait, does that mean there are female slimes? Luna never told me about that.

Just to be sure, I flexed all my muscles to keep my blood flow from going to the wrong place, and I gestured for Toba to wait outside with the wolves for a bit.

A bell rang when I opened the door, and the smell from the kitchen instantly hit me.

“Welcome… What can I help you with?”

A short woman with purple hair tied into a bun and tired eyes greeted me as I entered the inn.

The thousand yards stare…

“Greetings. I’m looking for a place to stay, are any rooms available?”

“Sure… I have a room. A single bedroom is 7 copper pieces, are you alone, kid?”

“Actually, I have my brother with me, and we also need a place to clean ourselves.”

“I can bring in a tub… If it’s just you two you can stay in the room as long as you don’t make a mess.”

“Actually… We have pets with us as well, is that ok?”

I was trying my best at maintaining a perfectly innocent face while negotiating, being a kid had lots of advantages.

“Pets? It’s not a big room, kid.”

Everything according to plan… Kukuku.

“It’s no problem if we have to pay for a double room, It’s only fair to lady.” I said with a big smile planted on my face, I could feel my Speech levels rising.

“Lady, huh…”

“We’ll also clean up after them, no need to worry about any mess!”

“Sight… Alright, alright. But I’ll charge extra for any damages. I have a bigger room for 11 copper pieces, It’s the one to your right.” She said as she pointed to a door near us, it was a room on the first floor.

“Here you go!” I tossed 11 pieces onto the counter, and while she was counting them, I called Toba in.

“Come Toba, let’s rest!”

As she was still picking up the coins, Toba walked in with our two huge wolfs and went straight into the room.

“WHAT IN THE WORLD?! Are those the pets?” All the coins in her hand fell back onto the counter.

“Thanks auntie, we really appreciate it!!” Before she could finish reacting, I was already closing the door.

“Phew… Let’s just hope she doesn’t kick us out now.”

And let’s hope the wolves won’t crap all over the place…

The room was not small, but with two wolves inside, it quickly became cramped.

Although I was worried the wolves would cause trouble, animals in this world were way smarter, so it wouldn’t be hard to train them.

“Let’s start with the basics.”

“What is brother doing?” Toba asked as I took out two pieces of meat from our backpack.

The wolves instantly turned to me; it was a while since we last ate.

I laid down the meat on the ground in front of me, and as the wolves were about to eat it, I held them back with both arms.

They instantly started growling and threatening to bite me, but I tightened the chokehold on them, and soon they were whimpering.

“Stay!” I commanded and pointed to the ground behind them.

They obviously didn’t know what I was saying, but they understood the pointing, and after trying to get to the meat again and failing, they finally obeyed.

I made them sit in a dog like pose to take up less space, and after two more attempts to go after the meat, they finally stayed put for 5 minutes, without moving a muscle.

I then picked up the meat and tossed it to them.

Just like that, they were now a little bit more obedient.

Thank God these things are clever, if it were back on Earth, it would take me days to make this work.

Toba was watching the whole thing and was naturally confused, so I finally explained it to him.

“I’m teaching them to behave, if we want to keep them with us in town, they need to obey us.”

“Brother is smart! Toba doesn’t understand at all!” He said with a weirdly excited face.

It almost makes me pity him, but he’s stronger than me so it balances out.

“Anyway, I’ll go get our tub, but first let’s see if they actually learned anything.”

They had finished eating already, so I pointed to a spot on the floor and again commanded:

“Stay!”

After a slight delay they moved a few steps and sat down like two trained dogs.

“Good boys!” I pat them both, I was out of meat but not out of rewards.

As soon as I started leaving, however, one of them got up again and started following me.

“No!” I used a minor spell effect to make a tiny flame on the tip of my finger and used it to lightly burn his forehead.

I was certainly not out of punishments either.

After commanding him again, he obeyed and I rewarded him, all while the other wolf seemed to mock him while staying perfectly put.

Toba was watching with a slightly weird face, he considered them “Kin” so the pet treatment I was giving them was expectedly weirding him out a little, but he trusted me to handle things.

“I’ll get going now, if they move too much just smack them in the head for me, ok?”

“O- ok!”

I walked out to a very angry innkeeper looking at me, but before she could scold me and kick me out, I took the initiative to apologize.

“Look, I know I wasn’t 100% honest, but I promise you I’ll take care of any damages or trouble they end up causing. They won’t cause trouble though; they’re very well behaved.”

“Humpf… I try to act nice to a couple of brats, and this is what I get…” She was clearly still angry, but I had some cards up my sleeve.

“Well, I didn’t lie though… And I’m not lying now, either.”

“How can they behave? Brats like you couldn’t possibly know a spell to command them.”

“See for yourself!”

I opened the door, and to my relief, both were still sitting down obediently.

“Hoo… I see the room is not completely destroyed yet. If I kick you out now, I can still get out of this without losses.”

“Don’t be like that, auntie. We’re responsible I swear, and we’ll find another place for them soon, we just need a temporary solution while we sort it out.”

She had her arms crossed and looked displeased, but she clearly wasn’t hostile to us, otherwise she would’ve kicked us out ages ago.

“By the way auntie… You’re the owner of this inn, right?”

“Hm? Yes, why do you ask?”

“I didn’t understand the name, what’s “Slutty”? And what is the blue lady on the sign doing?”

If there’s anything I learned from Luna, it’s that woman in this world are extremely shy regarding lewd topics, even if this lady is the one who came up with that pornographic sign and name, she should be embarrassed that a 12-year-old looking kid is questioning her about it.

“It means she’s a **** who likes *** and **** and she’s ******* ****** with her *********** ********* in her ***** so she can ***. Any more questions?”

“I- I need the tub…” I said with a beet-red face and went back to our room.

The innkeeper’s loud laughter kept going on for a good while.

I was not ready for that…

Eventually the innkeeper stopped laughing and brought us a tub, she even brought hot water, which made me wonder if she was even mad at us to begin with.

Maybe it’s our child privileges, or maybe I just gave her a good laugh.

I should’ve known though, if she chose a name like that for her inn, she is obviously shameless.

As I got ready for our bath, however, I remembered something crucial.

“SHIT! I forgot about my wounds!”

The acid burns on my face would end up turning into nasty scars if they were not healed with a spell, and as the days passed, I had forgotten all about it.

My face went pale as I started counting the days that had passed, but Toba soon brought me out of my daze.

“Wounds? What wounds brother?”

“Huh? The acid burns on my face obviously!”

“Brother’s wounds disappeared a long time ago, look.” Toba calmly stated as he pointed towards the tub water.

The surface was far from mirror-like, but with a quick flame minor effect to light it up, it was enough for me to see that my face was indeed flawless.

My hair was also getting a little too long.

“It’s true… And it didn’t even form a scar…” I said as I lightly touched my skin.

“Hm! Toba forgot brother’s wounds, healed too fast.”

What the hell… Is this because of my demonic blood? I didn’t know demons had regenerative abilities.

Maybe the wounds were just shallow, no need to overthink it.

“Well, that’s one problem taken care of. It would be bad if the cleric fee was too expensive, so it’s good we didn’t need a healing spell. We must use the money Luna left us with caution.”

After washing ourselves, we set out again with our mounts. I didn’t trust them enough to leave them unattended in the room, it was good enough that they didn’t soil the floor while we were there.

After a few more curious looks from the locals, we arrived at the adventurer’s guild. It was already getting late, but it should still be open, and I wanted to move as fast as I could.

The building differed from the others, being a lot larger and more robust, but it was still painted white with a blue rooftop to match the rest.

I left Toba to hold down the wolves outside just in case, and I confidently walked in.

The inside was very well kept, and my ears were instantly bombarded with countless conversations and noises that got together to form an atmosphere I was absolutely not used to.

Having lived in the forest for so long and now walking into a crowded and rowdy place like that, it was like an autistic kid suddenly finding himself in the middle of a warzone.

I flinched from the noise, but I had to open my eyes up quickly, because a moment later the place got a lot quieter, and everyone’s gazes were focused on me.

I was expecting it, people behaved a lot less politely when they’re gathered up like this, and my green hair must have brought too much attention.

Good thing I didn’t bring in the wolves…

I didn’t care about being stared at, as long as people didn’t provoke a fight, I wasn’t going to either, so I just ignored everyone and went straight to the counter.

On my way there, however, I couldn’t help but notice a blond girl sitting alone in the back, since she was the only one who didn’t seem to care about my arrival, and was just staring at her tankard, while tapping her tiny fingers on its edge.

Before I even arrived on the counter, however, people got back to their own business, and the noise resumed, drowning the girl again in a sea of people.

“Welcome to the adventurer’s guild! I’m Sophie, how can I help you?” A young woman with a cheerful smile greeted me.

She was pretty, and her voice was loud enough to be heard, but not annoying. Her short, light brown hair added identity to her delicate features.

Not short enough and unkept to be considered a tomboy, but she could pull it off if she were to put on some more unisex looking clothes… Her chest is also not big, so she has the potential for sure.

“Uhm, sir?”

“Sorry, I got a little lost in thought. My name is Cona, I’m here to apply both me and my brother Toba as adventurers, he’s waiting outside, watching our pets.”

“You’re certainly young, but I guess this is the right town for an early start after all. Are you familiar with the guild’s rules and rankings?”

“I am. I’m ready for the admission test!”

Luna had already explained everything to us in great detail.

Basically, adventurers were divided into rookies, normal, and expert adventurers.

Rookies were rankless and got only a temporary metal tag to qualify them. Ranked adventurers were classified by colors and got magic circles of the corresponding color to certify them.

Basically, it was a specially designed circle that could only be attached by the guild and would be exclusively attached to that adventurer.

The guild could keep track of each circle with spells and would do so to confirm deaths or apply promotions.

They intentionally couldn’t keep track of the location, but even so, it greatly enhanced their ability to manage each adventurer registered.

The colors were:

Normal ranks:

Pink

Yellow

Green

Blue

Red

Expert ranks:

Violet

Gold

Emerald

Azure

Crimson

Expert ranked adventurers got special treatment from the guild and would receive exclusive missions and benefits.

There was also the white rank, which served as the highest withing the guild, and was almost never given out.

I also knew about quest ranks, but we would only be allowed to take them once we got our pink rank.

Speaking of which… Why pink? I get that it’s the first rank, but it’s such a baby color.

“Ok! Since its two people, just bring us 20 goblin ears. You should be able to find wandering goblins in the plains to the west, just focus on defeating these, and in about a month you two should have enough.”

“A whole month? Seems like a lot for just 20 goblins.”

“Wandering goblins are the ones separated from their packs, so there aren’t that many, but you will be able to find at least 20 within a month or so, since there aren’t many rookies in town right now to compete.”

“What about regular goblins?”

“You can’t go after them just yet.” She said with a serious expression and paused for an instant before continuing the lecture.

“Even wandering goblins shouldn’t be underestimated, they’re usually tired and wounded, but even so they can kill a person if they get careless. Keep up a steady and careful pace so you can get experience, and when you get rid of the fear of fighting, you’ll receive your rank.”

“Ok… Do I need to call in my brother?”

“No need, the proper registration only takes place after the test, and if you’re lying, you’ll just end up having to kill double the goblins, hehehe.”

As expected, this task was handled very lightly, and was purposely made to not discourage new adventurers from starting out.

I could even think about several ways to buy my way in, but there was no need to do that.

I wanted the whole experience, baby steps and all.

“I’ll be going then, thanks!”

“You’re welcome, good luck out there!” The receptionist Sophie said with a warm smile, ending with a light chuckle as I turned to leave.

The women in this world sure are cute. Even the innkeeper is pretty, she’s just a little vulgar…

With that thought in mind, I was just about to leave, when I suddenly heard a loud bang, and the place went quiet for the second time.

“You think you can just sit there treating us like trash? There’s something called respect, I don’t care if your parents failed to teach you, it’s about time you learned it!”

Far in the back, a blonde girl was sitting at a table, but now she wasn’t alone anymore, and a broad guy with a sword on his back was scolding her. Apparently, the loud bang from before was due to him slapping the table with both hands.

I couldn’t help but get closer and observe the situation.

She wasn’t just an ordinary blond girl like I thought from afar, she had two small horns coming out of her head in between her ponytails and bangs, and her eyes were red with vertical pupils. I couldn’t spot a tail but looking for it allowed me to see had a petite and fit body.

Blonde ponytails, not much in the chest department, toned thighs and behind, hips just wide enough for reproduction, and to top it all off, devil horns and eyes.

There was only thing missing for her to be perfect.

“I said get lost; I’ll fucking kill you if you don’t.”

FANGS, SHE HAS SHARP FANGS!

Lord forgive me, but I want her to bear my children, I don’t care about being an adventurer anymore.

“WHAT?” The man got red with anger and put his hand on the girl’s shoulder.

Things are about to get dicey, should I intervene? I don’t want to act like a white knight, but she’s exactly my type, not too far from my current age either.

Fuck it, I’ll use this angry dude to show off and get her favor, it’s not a good look being this angry at a girl anyway. Although she does seem to have quite the temperament…

Just as I was about to walk up to the guy and punch him, all the hairs on my body stood on end.

The girl’s face was contorted in an almost impossible manner, and a large vein was almost bursting on her forehead.

Her sharp teeth were creaking, and her eyes were gazing at the poor dude like he had just killed her whole family. For the first time in my life, I experienced what was called “Killing intent”.

Before I could react, she had already kicked up the table and hit the guy’s chin with her tankard. As soon as he fell down, she dropped on top of him with a knee blow to his crotch and started relentlessly punching him in the face.

“DON’T.”

BANG

“TOUCH ME.”

BANG

“YOU FILTHY.”

BANG

“MAGGOT.”

BANG

“I’LL MURDER YOU.”

BANG

“Yup, that guy is dead.”

“That’s why you don’t mess with demons. They don’t care about consequences.”

“How many times has she been demoted? She would be blue rank by now if she could control her temper.”

“They’ll both be lucky if he survives though, I’m sure killing him will be the last straw.”

The surrounding adventurers calmly commented amongst themselves like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Killing him? She’s going to kill him for touching her shoulder?

I got out of my daze and ran to them, as soon as the adventurer’s now deformed face was about to receive another blow, I grabbed the crazed girl from behind and put her in an armlock.

“Are you crazy? You’re going to kill him!”

My armlock was executed perfectly, and there was no way for her to get out of it, so I felt everything was now under control.

“Now THAT guy is dead.”

“Yup.”

“So young too…”

Pff, these guys obviously don’t know BJJ, there’s no way for her to break free, unless she wants to break her arm.

SHUNK!

“AAAAAAAAAH!!!”

Just as I was wandering what those guys were talking about, my thigh, which was conveniently place near her head due to the armlock, started gushing out blood.

I FORGOT ABOUT THE TEETH.

SNAP!

The sharp pain sent a jolt through my body, and by reflex I tightened the lock, unintentionally breaking her arm.

There was no screaming on her end, instead she used the opportunity to break free.

The last thing I saw were two red eyes looking over me, one arm was hanging limply on the side, while the other pulled back to hit me square in the face.

BANG!
