The music blew so loud in the speakers that no one could hear themselves. The floor was filled with dancing teenagers and no one cared about the two hunters among them. It was an incredible luck that they had found this place. It was not far from their new home and there were so many young drunk people that there was always someone they could drain without causing any problems.
"What do you want tonight, Jack?" Fie's voice sounded weak as she looked around for a victim. "You know I do not like any of them here," Jack hissed softly. “Yeah, yeah,” laughed Fie, “if Lisa was here, could it be you would drain her? Or is she not good enough for you? ” Fie asked scornfully as she spotted a couple of guys who had just come in the door.
Jack turned his back on Fie without a word, and walked towards a group of girls standing and dancing in a corner. It was clear to see that they had got so the hat fit and a little more. "Just because I haven't found my type yet, she does not have to be arrogant," Jack mumbled angrily. The blonde on the far left of the group had to do it for tonight. It was not an act he enjoyed in any way, unlike the others in their little bunch, it just did not feel right to him.
Fie, like himself, had a foretaste of teens, but never had she had trouble knowing what she wanted. She had always been to big strong blue-eyed guys. David and Maja would rather have more mature food. They had infiltrated a golf club where they went in search of some they could drain.
For hundreds of years the demons had wandered the earth and been lords where they came forth, nothing could touch them. Yes, a single one of them smoked every now and then, but it was almost always the young or the careless. Never had one heard that one of the old men had been killed. But times changed, the wars that had ravaged humans for the last 200 years had driven their weapons from some lousy pieces of sharp steel, to weapons that could kill them from a great distance if they were not careful.
Many solutions had emerged to what they were doing now that they were no longer the almighty demons from the mountain, but merely strong hunters. Some had found places they could defend against the paladins with large enough human groups so they were not discovered, others lived as nomads and wandered from place to place, and then there was Jack's small group. They had found a third solution that allowed them to settle in areas for several years in a row without any problems.
Jack was quick to bid the blonde hair up for dancing and as usual she did not hesitate for a moment. Why should one have nails that could cut through steel, why be strong as 50 men and fast as a cheetah, when one was also so charming that the prey willingly accompanied one to its death.
The nomads would have lured her out into a parking lot and sucked the life out of her there, but not Jack. Instead, he danced with her for hours, slowly stealing a little of the spark of her life every time he touched her. No one saw what was going on, but if some had looked Jack in the eye, they would have seen them slowly shift from his normal black eyes to the blonde's blue color.
As the blonde began to sway violently and was about to lose consciousness, Jack gently took and lifted her and carried her to her girlfriends who were still standing and dancing. "Is there one of you who can take her home?" shouted Jack over the music. "Stop it, dude! What did you do to her? ” exclaimed a little brunette.
"I think she drank a little too much. She started to fall asleep while dancing, ”Jack replied the brunette. "I'll take her home," said a red-haired girl to Jack's right.
Jack's old leader, who sadly died shortly after, one day discovered another way of life. He had been draining a girl just as he normally would, but before he could take the last bite of her life from her, he had been interrupted by some shooting-crazy boys. He had run from the place so fast that no one got to see him, but something strange had happened.
Although he did not feel fully satiated, as he normally did, if he had taken the last spark from the person, he could feel the strength of his body. They could just take most of the life force and the person would recover and they would be able to get full such. One funny side effect they had found, by not taking the last spark, was that they did not get red eyes from it.
Instead, it was as if they were copying their victim's eye color. The advantage of this was that the paladins were much longer to grasp that something was wrong when there were no corpses.
"Are you done?" Fie's voice sounded behind Jack. "Yes, let's come home", he laughed as he aimed his new beautiful blue eyes at Fie, who had also gotten a pair of deep blue eyes herself, now she was really blonde.
The full moon shone brightly in the night sky, and Jack began to wonder if Lisa might have looked at it too. He always loved these nights, the glow of the full moon always created a sense of security in him. All the demons had a strange relationship with the moon. Some became hungrier and others became restless from it.
“Why do you only stick to one victim every night? And why is it that you only go hunting, about every third time? ” asked Fie for approx. 800th time as they walked towards their home. "Have we not had this discussion too many times?" Jack's voice sounded annoyed. "How many times do I have to explain myself?" Jack asked with a sigh. Fie jumped up on a lamppost and enjoyed the power of just having eaten. "At least 1000 more times," she laughed. “Get down from there. Some will come, ”Jack hissed and Fie landed hard on the ground. "It's incredible to feel how strong you are, even when you go hungry. If it had been David or Maja, I would not have had a problem not obeying that order, but with you I have no choice, ”said Fie with something that sounded like a combination of respect and fear in her voice.
"Think what you could do if you did not starve yourself!" sang Fie as she was in control again. "You know why I'm starving myself," Jack said in a trembling voice. "Yes, yes, I know how you hate the feeling of not being able to take the last spark, but you know what happens if we do," Fie said as they turned a corner and a large architect-designed house appeared.
"But that does not explain why you starve yourself like that," she began. "Yes it does," Jack interrupted with a hiss. "How does that explain you starving yourself?" Fie asked as she unlocked the door to the large house. "The farther I can go without eating, the fewer times I have to keep the feeling of suffocating myself out," was all Jack gave as an explanation before slamming the door into his room.
His room was in most eyes very normal. A large bookcase filled to the brim with books from all over the world, filled the whole one away, while a large desk filled most of the opposite away. His guitar stood up off the table where he had left it last. On the outer wall stood a large bed, with a TV hanging from the ceiling.
The only thing that really stood out was the big moon painted in the ceiling. For most teens, it would have been a perfectly normal room, but for a creature that did not sleep, the bed did not make much sense. still grumpy after Fie's comment, Jack kicked his shoes over in the corner and walked towards his bed. He have approx. 6 hours to kill before school started again. normally he would have gone down to the living room and played one of the instruments down there or he would have invited the others up for a game of one kind or another, but Fie was just going to ruin his evening with the stupid question.
But here he lay watching television, continuing to hope that time would hurry a little so that school could start again and he could see Lisa. Time was one of the few things he could not command, even when he was completely full, but it would also have been too overpowered, what fun would there be in it if even time obeyed him.
After a few hours, David's voice came down from the living room. Jack! Fie! Can you be tempted to come down to the living room? ”Jack knew that if he hesitated too long, David would come and get him. "Come now" shouted Fie and Jack at the same time. All four of them gather in the living room at a large, finely carved wooden table. It was a David had made for Meja when they first met. "I just wanted to hear from you what your first day of school here was like, what your hunting opportunities look like, and if you have seen this," David said as he rolled out a newspaper. The front page story was of some guy who has broken some record. "What are we going to see?" Asked Fie.
It could really annoy Jack that she did it, why could she not just check the whole page herself, if she had done that she would have discovered a little article about the Paladins settling in the neighboring town. " no I had not seen it ”Jack replied coldly. "Do you think they know we're here?" he asked David as he tried to find out if it was mentioned how many they were. "No it says that some girl named Anna has been found dead for no reason, think they are on the trail of a lazy nomad, I just wanted to inform you to be careful." explained David. "Enough about all the gloom, how was your first day of school?" Meja broke in happily.
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"Nice" answer Jack short. "Jack let now worth, it was absolutely amazing, there were so many cute guys and Jack has found a girl he like." why should she also gossip about everything, he could never just be allowed to have some things to himself. "A girl" David asked, raising an eyebrow. Why did they need to sound so puzzled. Just because he usually did not let anyone get close did not mean he did not like people. He just avoided people who were only interested in him because of his ability. Even when he was completely starved and had no strength, he looked like a photo model in the eyes of normal people. He did not like this artificial attention.
Fie loved it, but he hated it. Meja broke him out of his mind with the question "what is her name" "Lisa" answered Fie quickly. "And what made you think Jack likes her?" David asked as if Jack was not standing there, there really had not been time, than when someone was talking about one right in front of one's nose. "She did not seem to be ruled by his charm, but still chose to spend time with him." begin Fie as she edged away from Jack. "And then he introduced me immediately as his sister, without the normal cold front he sets up when we're out." Meja completely lost her jaw now, "you probably do not think our little Jack is ...."
"QUIET!" shouted Jack and his voice made a strange sound. All sound disappeared, the faint sound of the buzz of lights and the refrigerator which was only for decoration disappeared. The radio Fie having turned on in her room turned off and all voices disappeared. Even the air seemed unnaturally quiet for a brief second. "Yes I have found a girl who does not just fall over me right away and would spend some time with her, if you have a problem with that, then say so." he hissed.
David pointed to his mouth and raised an eyebrow. "Sorry I'm just not bothering to talk about a girl I've met once, feel free to talk again" Jack said, still with a lot of anger in his voice. before anyone could say otherwise, Fie’s voice sounded again. "Why is your 'voice' so strong, it's so cheating." she grumbled. the others looked just a moment before David spoke again "just remember to be careful, remember the Paladins are not far away" Davide had planned more, but did not reach it before 7 o'clock, where Jack and Fie were going to school, they never managed to talk hunting.
The weather was again wet and gray, so the floor would no doubt be slippery again today. Jack reached school at the same time as Lisa and could not help admiring how she twisted between all the others who were constantly toppling over. Jack walked quietly towards her to hear if they had anything together this morning when he saw a couple of guys start moving towards her.
One of the two was the joke from yesterday who did not see where he was going. "Hello bookworm", shouted the spade "it does not look like your hero is here today to protect you" he laughed scornfully as he approached her. Jack wondered a little why Lisa did not look scared, but then he recognized the face of someone who was used to this kind of experience. There was probably not usually anyone who would have bothered to stop them when they were in this mood, but it would stop now if Jack had something to say. Suddenly he stood between the thugs with one hand on each of their shoulders. "I think I heard some people calling your names a little down the classroom," Jack hissed loud enough for everyone to hear him.
"Who the fuck do you think you are" shouted one fool. "I do not think I'm some, I know I'm someone who's not going to find myself in a bunch of assholes ruining the day for a sweet girl like Lisa" Jack hissed again. "And if you do not disappear right now, they will not find your bodies," he hissed just loud enough for the two of them to hear him. something in Jack's gaze convinced them he was not joking and they hurried to run in the other direction.
Lisa stood a little with her mouth open while Jack walked the last bit to her. "Hello" he started tame "hello" she replied before her focus fell on his eyes "do you have contact lenses in?" she asked abruptly. "No, our family's eyes just change color with time, it's a genetic disease unique to us." he replied confidently. Once in a while there were some who were not so dazzled by all their other traits, then that lie has worked for far too many years now, so why should it not work now. "You know I do not believe in it" Lisa replied and start walking towards her local "you are allowed to keep your secret a little longer, but I will probably find out what it is".
Jack stood there gaping a little before coming to himself and catching up with Lisa "what have you got in the first hour" she asked over her shoulder before he had time to ask. "Math again" he replied even more confused. "Then we can follow along". Lisa laughed out loud and pointed to a large mirror at the end of the hallway where he could see his confused face. Well that was how she knew he had caught up with her.
"What did you do yesterday after school" Lisa asked quietly as they sat in math class and took notes while their energetic professor worked out a tangent about the mathematical beauty of the golden ratio. "Fie and I took a walk into town and learned a little about the local dance venues." he replied quietly, "what about you" he asked as he began to draw doodles on his paper. "Was just there at home and relaxing with my parents." Lisa answered. "Did you find any good places to dance?" came the next question carefully. "Yes there was a good nightclub down in the center." Jack replied quietly, why was she so curious. Normally girls would just sit and look at him and giggle uncontrollably, but Lisa seemed to be immune.
"Let me guess cola league?" she asked as she jotted down a formula. "Yes, how did you know it was the one we were on?" it came confused from Jack. "That's where all the cool ones come from." Lisa replied with a little bitterness in her voice. "We normal mortals have to settle for smaller places." okay definitely sour rowanberries. Before Jack could come up with an answer, the bell rang again. "Do you also have biology now?" Lisa asked over the noise of all the other students. "Yes" Jack replied happily, "then we can go there" Lisa laughed. The sound of her laughter did something intrasandy to Jack. He felt a strange joy at the sound of her laughter.
On the way to biology, Lisa slipped on the wet stairs, and was about to take it backwards down from it. Jack had managed to get a few steps ahead, and there was no way he would be able to grab her this time. Time start to go incredibly slowly for Jack, he knew that if she landed at the wrong angle she would not survive it. If she died here and now, he would not hear her laugh again, and that laughter he could not handle losing. The idea of losing the first person he had met who did not allow himself to be influenced by his charm was far too unpleasant and he reacted instinctively.
3 supernaturally fast steps and he was down at the end of the stairs and grabbed Lisa with no problems. "Are you okay?" He asked worriedly. "Yes you grabbed me." she started "how did you do that, you were in front of me on the stairs, how did you get down so you could grab me?" she asked but her voice sounded strangely accusing, still with her arms around his neck where they had ended up in her fall. "Think you have seen visions, I have always walked behind you." Jack answered quickly and checked that his words had the normal effect on the witnesses.
Everyone stood and nodded and commented that yes he had always been right behind her, but Lisa’s facial expression was not of someone who bought what he sold. "I do not know how you did it, but I'm happy for it anyway" Lisa said quietly. "May I come down again?" Lisa asked shyly as she began to turn red in the head. Only now did it dawn on Jack that he was still standing and carrying her. "Of course," he replied quickly, and put her down on her feet again. When she first got back on her feet, Jack gently took her hand. "Then you can not fall that far before I can grab you again" Jack laughed as an explanation for Lisa's wondering look. They rushed to biology and reached just that before the bell rang again.
Throughout the biology class, there were whispers around them about how Jack had saved Lisa again. he really wished they would leave worthwhile, but if he asked them for it now, it would only make it worse later. Lisa's cheeks were bright red when Jack without hesitation took her hand again after biology and started leading her down to the canteen. "I can go by myself," she said embarrassed after a group of boys whistled after them. "Yes but I dare not risk you slipping again and I can not catch you" was all she got in return.
They had to wind around scaffolding on the way to the canteen, an email had been sent out that there were some who had to do something with the ventilation, Lisa explained along the way.
Fie assaulted them again as they entered the canteen. "What do I hear, my dear brother has played the prince on the white horse twice in the same day?" sounded the teasing from Fie. Why was it also just that she should hear everything that happened at school. “Yes he has been really sweet today, is he always like that? after your city trips, because then you have to take some more of them ”Lisa laughed shyly.
"No this is the first time I've experienced it" Fie laughed as she winked at Lisa. "It must be companies that do it" continued Fie and Lisa turned completely red in the lid. Jack could see how Lisa stopped when she had the courage to look Fie in the eye. "Your eyes have changed too" Lisa exclaimed, clapping her hands over her mouth. "Yes, let me guess he has tried to explain it with a unique genetic disease" asked Fie and Lisa just nodded. "And you did not buy it" "No" was the short answer. "You've found an exciting friend here, Jack." Commented Fie. If he did not know. she did not fall head over heels for him right away, and when he had eaten she could resist the effect of his words.
What was she really for one, if it were not for the fact that she was so soft, he would think she was a demon like himself, but that could not fit. Their lunch went quietly without any problems. they unfortunately had to have different hours again after lunch. It still amazed Jack that it annoyed him so much when they had to go their separate ways "what effect do you have on me lisa?". When the bell rang for the last time and Jack was on his way down to his car, there was a bang and a piercing scream from across the canteen. One of the large racks had collapsed. Jack took like everyone else and became curious and wanted to go and see what happened. He totally stopped when he saw the pile, it was clear to see that the pile of stand parts was very unstable and would probably collapse more under its own weight soon.
in itself it would not normally mean anything, but the problem lay in of within under all rack dividing, lay Lisa and seemed to have been seriously injured. Jack did not think about what he was doing, he just knew he had to save her for the 3rd time that day. Before anyone could grasp what happened, Jack on his own ripped metal stand and wooden boards into small pieces and threw them away from Lisa. He only noticed that Fie's voice was beginning to try to explain away what people had just seen before he gently lifted Lisa up and had her carried free of the tripod remains. It was not many minutes before rescue workers were there and Lisa was taken in for observation for the night.
