After the shocking event that occurred, I headed downstairs. I don't seem to recall seeing any room in this house that resembles a dining room, so I was quite curious where it was.
I found Cecilia removing the sewing machines from the large table.
"Here, Colette! Have a seat!" she said, as she offered me a chair. "I'm so sorry you had to see this horrible mess of a table, Colette. I don't have enough money yet to renovate my home, so please bear with me."
I simply nodded. Cecilia placed two plates on the table, one for me and one on the opposite side. She then placed a basket between the plates. This is probably the main dish. She put out what seems to be two pieces of bread and placed it on my plate.
"Umm..."
"Hmm? What is it, Colette?"
"Are we only going to eat bread?"
Cecilia chucked for a bit before answering my question. "Of course not. You want to eat something that goes well with bread right? Here, I also have here some frankfurters." She used a wooden fork to get a wiener-looking hotdog and placed it on my plate.
"........"
"Hmm? Is something wrong, Colette? You're face is getting all red."
"N-No, it's nothing. I just had a feeling of Deja vu." And an unpleasant one, at that.
"Deja vu? What's that?"
"It's best if you don't know."
"Ahh, I see. Well, that's fine for me," Cecilia said before sitting on the chair at the left of me.
I took a bite of the bread and a small bite of the hotdog. This tastes surprisingly good.
"Cecilia - Er, I mean..." Hang on. I shouldn't be calling her Cecilia. Even if she was young, it wasn't the proper way to address someone older than you.
"Hehe." She gave me a light laugh before saying, "It's okay. You can just call me whatever you like."
"O-Okay... Big sis..."
Oops! Wait, did I seriously just blundered and called her big sis?! Oh no, I was too direct! The thought of me having a big sister like Cecilia made me happy a bit, but I accidentally uttered the words "big sis" out loud!
"Hmm." Cecilia stared at me. "Big sis. Huh. I see." I could feel myself sweating bullets right now. I was practically shaking in humiliation.
"No... It's not that... I'm sorry..."
"Aww, don't cry, Colette." She proceeded to wipe off the tear that fell from my eye before giving me a big hug. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you, so you can call me big sis."
"T-Thank you..." Was all I could say. Geez, there was literally nothing I could do rather than thank her for her kindness.
"So, do you enjoy the food, Colette?" Cecilia asked me.
"Mmm," I responded with a nod. "This tastes good. Where did you cook this?"
"Unfortunately, I don't have any cooking skills at the moment." She took a bite of the bread. "I just bought this in the nearest restaurant here. But, if you want, I am willing to raise my skills to make you delicious food like this, Colette."
I probably have to make some time for cooking though, Cecilia added.
"Hmm?" Now that wording piqued my interest. "Raise your stats?"
"Yep. You don't know?"
I shook my head in response.
"It's a system in this world that lets you raise your level in a specific skill. Specifically, it's called leveling up."
"Huh. So it's like a video game."
"A video game? What's that?"
If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"Err, you don't need to know..."
"Hmm, okay. Anyways, the more experience you gain the higher your level is going to be. Here, look." Cecilia stuck out her finger. At first, I thought she was pointing at the wall, but she made a gesture in the air that looked like she was drawing the letters I and D. A dialogue window popped out.
Name: Cecilia Frei
Age: 24 Years 6 Months old
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Occupation: Dressmaker (Lvl. 94)
Life: 100%
"This is what we call an ID Window. Here you can see information about certain stuff in this world, like its name, age, gender, race, occupation, and life. Of course, I'm just a normal citizen, but when you get other occupations like being an Adventurer, a Student, or a Blacksmith, your ID Window will change accordingly."
"I see..."
Wow. It's literally like an MMORPG game.
"How about you try it, Colette?"
"Okay..." I imitated the movement of Cecilia's finger and drew the letters I and D in the air.
Name: Colette
Age: 15 years old
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Occupation: Unknown
Life: 100%
"See? This is your own ID Window."
"Wow..." I couldn't hide my excitement. This truly is a world modeled after games, and now I'm experiencing first-hand, in the flesh. Sucks to be all those people who only see these things behind plastic screens. This is definitely better than video games.
Cecilia pointed at my name, "Hmm, it looks like you don't have a last name yet, Collette."
"Do I need to have one?"
"Yes! The king regularly checks the list of people setting foot on his country. Having a last name can confuse the king for other people, so it is now indicated in the law that all people must have last names."
"I see... But I don't have a last name?"
"You don't? Don't you have any parents?"
"Uhh... No... I don't remember..." It was obviously a lie. I couldn't possibly tell her that I came from another world and got reincarnated as a girl.
"I see. Well, why not use my last name then?"
"Colette Frei?" It doesn't sound like a bad name, but at the same time, it doesn't sound like a good one either. "Sure, that sounds nice."
"Great! Your ID Window must've updated by now."
"Huh? Really?" I checked my ID Window and, sure enough, my name was now "Colette Frei". "Wow, that was fast."
"It updates the moment you decide on that name, Colette," Cecilia explained. "Wow, it's like we're a family now! Since you call me big sis, can I call you lil' Colette?"
"But it makes my name longer."
"Nah, it's ok. It's just a nickname."
"But that's as long as my full name now." It may not be a mouthful, but "Colette Frei" have the same syllables as "Lil' Colette."
"Hmm. What do you suggest then?"
"I don't know, maybe make it shorter or something?"
"Hmm... The only nickname I could think of is Cole, but that's a boy's name..." Cecilia stopped eating and stared at the ceiling, probably to think. I was interested in what kind of nickname she comes up, so I sat there eating, waiting for an answer. Her head popped up a few seconds later.
"I've thought of something."
"Wow, that was fast. Hit me with it."
"Cofi."
"How in the world did you even get that nickname?!"
"You don't like it?"
"I'm pretty sure there are better ones..."
"Ok. So we get a little bit of 'Colette' and a little bit of 'Frei' to get..."
"To get?"
"Colei."
"That doesn't sound like a bad name, but it makes me sound like some sort of germ..."
"Hmm, I can't think of any more. I guess I'll just stick to calling you Colette then."
"Yes. Please do."
By the time we ended the conversation, the food on our plates was gone. We must've been eating it while we were engaging in that stupid banter. I gave my plate to Cecilia and excused myself, before going upstairs to my room.
"Oh by the way," Cecilia said before I even set foot on the stairs. "I know this might be a sensitive question, but if I may ask, where are you from?"
"Huh?"
"Well, no human was born from nothing, so you must've at least have a home country, right?"
"........" I was frozen at the spot due to Cecilia's sudden question. I felt a chill running down my spine. How did she know? Was it so obvious? Wait, no! There's no way she would've figured out by our conversation. This might possibly be a bluff, so I decided to act ignorant for now.
"No, sadly. I don't remember where I came from, who my parents are or what country I was born in."
"Is that so?" Cecilia tilted her head. Damn, big sis is giving off some serious vibes here now. She might possibly be more observant than that goddess, Valkyrie. Wait, no. Perspective might be the better word to describe her.
Cecilia approached me and patted me on the head. "It's okay, Colette. You can tell me anything. I promise not to tell a single word."
I'm your big sister after all, she added.
"......"
I couldn't say anything.
What else could I say? Should I just straight up tell her the whole truth? Or maybe there might be some way to avoid this conversation altogether? The latter is probably impossible by now, but telling people about my identity in this world is dangerous. It's like that feeling where you think about telling one of your best friends your deepest secrets, but also being wary of them, because any time they might spill the beans and it causes a huge commotion.
The thought of it happening is frightening.
"Ahh, I see. Looks like you can't tell me yet," Cecilia said before pulling me into a hug. Due to our height difference, she was embracing me on her stomach, which means that her breasts were resting on top of my head. "Don't worry. If there's anything troubling you, I'll be here. You can trust me."
"Okay..."
I could only nod to her in response.
Cecilia continued to stroke my head that night. I felt my face growing hot once again, which means that my face was probably turning red. While a portion of me felt extremely lucky to meet someone with such warm kindness as her, the other large portion is due to the two huge lumps resting on top of my head. I couldn't focus on anything ever since she pulled me into her warm hug.
It looks like I have discovered a new rival.
