Lance felt a sudden wave of exhaustion overtake him. It was like he had run twenty miles—except now there were no muscles left in his legs to carry him anywhere else but back to the ground. His vision went blurry and black around the edges as if someone was squeezing it from outside, then everything went dark for several seconds before returning to normal. All the energy drained out of him, leaving him weak and dizzy. He looked over to see Sophie looking worse than ever; her eyes seemed glazed, dull, with just a hint of bloodshot redness showing through. Was she okay? Or did something happen when they used their skills that depleted them both so much? What should he do? How long would they last without getting help?

"Hey, let's help these guys!" one of the civilians that had been huddling in a corner shouted. "They saved us, it's the least we can do!"

Another joined them: "Yeah! Let's save them."

Several more voices—mostly men—joined the chorus until everyone who could stood up on their own two feet and walked toward the monsters like zombies, only stopping when they were about five steps away from the unconscious bodies.

One man stepped forward. He wore a suit and tie—like a businessman or someone in finance—and held an old revolver in his hand. Lance couldn't tell what model it was, but the barrel looked rusty and dull.

"How are you going to kill them?" asked another one of the "civilians".

"What the hell?" Lance asked. He turned back to Sophie; she looked as pale as death now. What did that guy just say? "Are those things people? Because if they aren't, then there's no need to worry about killing them." That last bit came out a little louder than he wanted too. The other civilians stopped moving towards them completely and began whispering amongst themselves. They stared at him with wide eyes. A few even took a step backward. If anything, they seemed more afraid of Lance himself instead of the monsters.

Lance realized.

They weren't monsters. Just humans gone mad, preying on their own saviors.

He should have known this would happen—he'd seen enough of the world today already for one lifetime—but somehow it still shocked him like it was new information. How could people be so cruel, or had these creatures always been evil underneath it all? Why didn't anyone stop them before it got this far?

Lance turned back to face his foes. Both monsters were dead, but now there were a batch of six rabid civilians that wanted to kill him. The first already had his gun up, albeit not one that was aimed at Lance.

"We need to kill them all," Sophie whispered. She looked like she might fall over any second. "Kill them all and leave no survivors."
