It had been a normal Tuesday afternoon up until that message appeared in Lance's mind. All he'd been trying to do was get home on the subway, already stripped out of his detective uniform. Now, he found himself running through the streets of New York City, trying to escape from the infected citizens.

"What am I supposed to do?" Lance shouted out loud as he tried to make it back to the subway station. "I don't want to fight."

He could feel an overwhelming fear and panic coming from everywhere around him. The entire city seemed like a battlefield. People were screaming and fighting each other over food or water. Many people had turned into monsters, more blood-thirsty than ever before.

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

Lance knew that there was only one thing he could possibly do in this situation. He decided to protect the last bit of humanity left alive. He had no choice, but he would do anything to ensure that everyone lived.

As he ran, he began to notice something strange about the monsters around him. They weren't attacking each other, at least not yet. It was almost as though they were waiting on him.

Lance quickly made it back to the subway station, where he stood and watched everything unfold. There had to be some way to end this mess, he thought to himself. The only way things were going to get better was if he stopped the source of all these problems.

Lance took a deep breath and looked straight ahead. "Damn it!"

He thought for a second, then reached out and tried to feel for the minds that that message had suggested he could read. He didn't even know what he was looking for, but he knew that he needed to figure it out fast.

Lance reached out, and someone reached back.

"Help me," a girl's voice said in his head, loud and clear like she was right next to him.

Lance closed his eyes and focused inward, trying to find her.

There. Running away from a crowd of things that must have once been human. They were slow, far slower than she was, and the girl was outpacing them easily.

He couldn't see the face of the girl, just her body as she ran away from the group of monsters, trying to keep herself out of the range of their bloodstained claws.

Lance followed her, feeling the flow of energy around her. She was scared, and so was he, but he had to do this.

She turned down a narrow alleyway between two buildings, and Lance followed. This was the perfect place for him to make an entrance.

The girl heard him coming and dropped to the floor, hiding behind a large pile of garbage.

No. That reaction hadn't been because of Lance. He whirled around, a voice inside his head screaming that there was another presence behind him.

A monster. The being was seven feet tall and grey-skinned, the remnants of a business suit barely clinging on to its bloodstained skin.

Lance fired his pistol. Two shots to the center of mass, one to the head. Standard practice.

The being fell, blue blood spurting out from its wounds.

So they die just like the rest of us, he thought.
