White Death's story

White Death's story

Genji proceeded to the barracks after talking with Edward.

When he arrived there, he found that there was a commotion in the area. The soldiers are sitting in a circular formation, forming a makeshift arena. Inside he saw two men are fighting with wooden weapons. One of the men looks like Ragnar Lodbrok from Vikings, his name was Bertrand, the castellan of the castle garrison. The other man is younger looking and has the looks of Balian of Ibelin from Kingdom of Heaven. He is a new face in the castle, but will soon be one of the blacksmiths of the castle and is called George the Younger. George's brother and father, George the Older and Gregory Frederickson are knights of the family, but the younger George was a sent by Gregory to apprentice in the blacksmith guild of Oldtown from a young age.

Genji saw that George the Younger has talent for he has even reached the combat capabilities of a knight, though Genji thinks that George's father and older brother are better, but Genji still has to admit that the Younger George at the very least isn't inferior to them in dueling and single combat. On the other hand, George's opponent, Bertrand is an old veteran and knows many tricks with the sword and shield, but due to injuries and age, he is not as good as he once was. George, using his superior advantage of youth, pressured Bertrand with a flurry of blows until Bertrand's stance became unstable, upon which George, seeing that the opponent was slack, used his shield to slam into Bertrand's, but Bertrand was just waiting for George to do that, so he responded by stepping back to the side. George force didn't meet a counterforce so he wasn't able to control his momentum. Bertrand, not one to miss an opportunity, also tripped George with his feet, so George then continued moving forward as he tried to regain his balance, and he finally did regain it, but it was already too late for Bertrand's sword is already on his neck.

"If that was on the field of battle, Bertrand wouldn't even need to look back at you, for you'll crash into his second line, where you'll be skewered by their pikes and swords."

Genji said with his normal tone amidst the cheers and howls of the excited audience, but his words still found its way to the ears of everyone in the area, and the ruckus instantly dissipated, as if there was no human being in the area except for Genji himself.

"Second son of the House of Deckard, Cain was the name given to me at birth. Welcome to my noble father's castle George the Smith, descendant of Frederick."

"Nice to meet you second lord. I've heard many things about you, Baron Deckard's second son, but I didn't expect that the rumors even how outlandish they are, did not do you enough justice."

George said after regaining his breathe. Genji took a look around the throng of soldiers, upon which each of them scrambled to stand up and look for some training to do. Genji ignored them as if seeing nothing but then squinted his eyes upon looking at Bertrand, who was also trying to escape. Bertrand, seeing that he could not escape, decided to drag the rest of the soldiers into the fire, so he shouted.

"HALT! EVERYBODY STAND AT ATTENTION!!"

Upon hearing his word, every soldier then ran and lined up for inspection, all while insulting Bertrand in their thoughts. As the soldiers finished, Bertrand reported to Cain.

"Second lord! Everything is ready for inspection."

Genji stared at every soldier, found that nothing was amiss, then looked at Bertrand while saying.

"The lads look sharp enough, no need for further drills, dismiss them."

"Thank you, young lord. You hear that laddies! DISMISS!!"

Thinking that he has dodged a bomb, Bertrand felt a little good about himself. Genji ignored his little actions then turned to George, who now has recovered his strength.

"Sorry for the disturbance Mr. George, these hooligans have always been a little willful. Especially this old boy here, don't be fooled by his honest look, but he is really a wolf in sheep's clothing. I implore you that you may forgive his transgressions upon you."

"A small matter. Besides, I was the one who invited him to spar, young lord. I've heard the soldiers speak that he was the one who trained you to be as good as you are now, lord Cain, or should I call you, White Death?"

"Is that so? I do admit that I've learned a lot from Bertrand, but he has taught me nothing of the skills that made me famous as the White Death."

Bertrand then added.

"Lord Cain being the White Death really has nothing to do with me. Should I tell him, young lord?"

Genji nodded.

"The second lord, when he was younger, wasn't much of a soldier. He was always the dead last of his batch."

George looks surprised and looked at Genji a second time.

"But..."

Bertrand continued.

"But all the more impressive for him to be what he is now. A dragon among men. And all because of a woman."

George was shocked and alternated his stare between Genji and Bertrand. Genji then said the rest of the story.

"Well, six years ago, a family of two arrived here in this castle. A father and his daughter of about 12 years. The man was a merchant. He then served my father to be the manager of the family's business in Oldtown. The girl was made as a scullery maid and sent to the kitchen to work. Their work is tiring but they were happy for they can see each other."

"4 years after their family's arrival in the castle, something happened. The daughter got sick during the winter so the father upon receiving the news, got worried about his daughter so he left the warmth of Oldtown to travel to our castle carrying some necessities. A blizzard raged during the afternoon after he left, so my father's men who were left in Oldtown we're worried for him. As soon as the blizzard ended, the men from Oldtown decided to send a group to follow the man. The men followed the route back to the castle, but they didn't find anybody, so they told my father about what happened. Father then arranged a search party without informing the sick girl. After a night of fruitless searching, the man wasn't found. There was another blizzard again in the morning, so the search parties soon found it impossible to continue, so father decided to declare the man as good as dead."

"Once the news was passed to the girl, she was so sad and distraught that she passed out. She woke up in the evening and so she decided to leave the castle to search for her father. Now, what does that have to do with me? As you know, my mother was not of noble birth and was merely a kitchen maid, but as soon as she gave birth to me, she became head of the kitchen. So, my poor mother, upon learning that the girl disappeared, informed my father. My father, knowing the story, was sad about the family's fate but did nothing. Now, I was merely 14 at that time, but I know the girl and also liked her, so when I learned about what happened, I immediately grabbed a torch, my coat and sword then proceeded to search for the family myself."

"I know the places where my father searched plus a few places where they didn't, and that was because of extraordinary presence. The closest I can think of was the house of the evil witch. I have doubts about her ever since the time the girl was sick, so I decided to search her place first. Now, the witch was a really, really greedy monster. She likes to eat children, maidens and male virgins and entices these type of people to enter her territory. Now, as soon as I entered the vicinity of the territory, I was discovered and captured by the witch and learned that both father and daughter are enslaved and imprisoned too. The daughter was on a cage and the father was made to feed her and fatten her up."

"Now, why didn't my father searched for them here? As you can see, my father was merely a ceremonial grand knight, invincible among knights but can only occupy more militant grand knights for a short time. And the witch has a combat power of a grand knight herself plus she has a giant spider familiar who is similar to her level. My father can only be rendered helpless by the witch. She has also killed and wounded a few grand knight level characters, your ancestor Frederick and my grandmother Lilith respectively, so it's suicide for someone like father. Now, why did I enter the place where even my father feared to tread? If I tell you because the girl owed me a kiss that time, would you believe me?"
