Chapter 7: The Road to Escape

Chapter 7: The Road to Escape

Since the confrontation with the mysterious men in black, Li Tong's life had plunged into an unprecedented state of tension. He clearly realized that he had been targeted by unknown forces, and staying in his hometown would only put him in grave danger. To protect himself and his family, he had to make a difficult decision—to leave his hometown and temporarily evade capture.

Late at night, Li Tong sat alone on the sofa at home, replaying everything that had happened recently in his mind. He knew that his abilities not only made him different but also made him a target for those mysterious forces. He had to leave, but it wasn’t an easy decision because he needed to explain his departure to his family, colleagues, and boss.

The next morning, Li Tong woke up early as usual. His mother was already busy in the kitchen, and his father was on the sofa in the living room reading the newspaper. Li Tong walked over to his mother and quietly said, “Mom, I need to talk to you and Dad about something.”

His mother turned around, a look of concern on her face. “Ah Tong, what’s so important that you have to talk about it so early?”

“Dad, Mom, let’s sit down and have a chat,” Li Tong said, trying to keep his voice calm, though he couldn’t suppress the tension in his heart.

His father put down the newspaper and looked at his son, frowning slightly. “What’s so serious?”

Li Tong hesitated for a moment before finally speaking. “Dad, Mom, I might need to leave for a while to take care of some things. It’s something arranged by the company.”

His mother’s face immediately showed worry. “Ah Tong, why do you have to leave so suddenly? Is something wrong at work?”

Li Tong shook his head. “It’s not a work problem. The company has a project that requires me to be temporarily reassigned. I thought about it and decided it’s a good opportunity to improve myself and plan for the future.”

His father’s expression grew more serious. His instincts told him that his son wouldn’t make such a decision without a good reason. “Ah Tong, this is so sudden. Are you sure about this? Maybe you should think it over.”

Li Tong knew his parents’ concern came from love, but he couldn’t let them get involved in this danger. He could only offer a vague explanation. “Dad, Mom, don’t worry. The company has everything arranged. I’m just going to assist for a while. Once things are settled, I’ll come back.”

Tears began to well up in his mother’s eyes. “Ah Tong, how are you going to manage on your own out there? What if something happens? Who will help you?”

“Mom, don’t worry, I’ll be careful,” Li Tong reassured his mother. “The place the company is sending me to is very safe. Nothing will happen. Plus, I’ll call home regularly to let you know I’m okay, so you don’t have to worry.”

His father remained silent for a while, then finally nodded, his voice filled with reluctant concern. “Alright, since it’s the company’s arrangement, we won’t stop you. Just take care of yourself, and if anything happens, let us know.”

Li Tong felt a pang of sadness in his heart. He knew he might be gone for a while and wasn’t sure when he’d be able to return. He stood up, gently hugged his mother, then walked over to his father. “Dad, Mom, you both take care of yourselves too. I’ll come back as soon as I can.”

After saying goodbye to his family, Li Tong knew he still needed to explain things at work. He decided to resign, but he also understood that suddenly quitting might surprise his colleagues and boss, so he needed a reasonable explanation.

Li Tong called his boss. On the other end of the line, his boss’s familiar voice answered, “Hello, Li Tong? Calling so early, what’s up?”

Li Tong took a deep breath, trying to keep calm. “Boss, there’s something I need to talk to you about.”

“Oh? What is it? Go ahead,” his boss said, with a hint of concern in his voice.

“I may need to resign to deal with some personal matters,” Li Tong said, trying to keep his tone light.

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line, clearly surprised by Li Tong’s sudden decision to resign. “Li Tong, is there a problem at work? Or are you facing some difficulties? If there’s an issue, we can help you resolve it.”

“Boss, thank you for your concern,” Li Tong said gratefully. “Actually, there are some family matters I need to take care of, and I might be gone for a while. To avoid disrupting the company’s plans, I think it’s best if I resign.”

“Sigh, Li Tong, you’ve been with us for a long time, and you’ve always done a good job. It’s a shame to see you leave so suddenly,” his boss sighed. “But if that’s your decision, I won’t try to stop you. What are your plans?”

“I don’t have any specific plans yet, just need to leave for a while and then see what happens after I’ve taken care of things at home,” Li Tong replied.

“Alright, I’ll help arrange your work here. Take care of your personal matters first, and if you need anything, feel free to contact us anytime,” his boss said, his voice tinged with reluctance but understanding of Li Tong’s decision.

“Thank you, boss,” Li Tong said gratefully, then hung up the phone.

Next, Li Tong needed to explain things to his colleague, Ah Qiang. Ah Qiang was Li Tong’s closest colleague on the delivery platform, and they often helped each other out at work. Li Tong knew that his departure might surprise and worry Ah Qiang.

“Ah Qiang, I need to talk to you about something,” Li Tong said during a break at work one day.

“What’s up, Li? Go ahead,” Ah Qiang asked casually while organizing orders.

“I might need to resign. There are some family matters I need to go back and take care of for a while,” Li Tong said, trying to keep his tone calm.

Ah Qiang stopped what he was doing and looked up at Li Tong, clearly shocked by the news. “Li, are you leaving suddenly? Is something wrong at home?”

Li Tong smiled slightly, trying to keep his expression light. “It’s nothing major, just some things at home that need my attention. I might be gone for a while.”

Ah Qiang frowned, “Li, leaving so suddenly… Are you sure nothing’s wrong?”

“Really, there’s nothing wrong,” Li Tong said, patting Ah Qiang on the shoulder. “It’s just that the situation at home is urgent, and I need to take care of it.”

Ah Qiang was silent for a moment, then finally nodded. “Alright, Li, you’re the backbone of our team here. It’s going to be hard to adjust without you. But since you’ve decided, I won’t ask more. Just take care of yourself, and if you need any help, you know where to find me.”

“Thanks, Ah Qiang,” Li Tong said gratefully.

After saying goodbye to his family and colleagues, Li Tong quietly returned to his place. He began packing his things, preparing to embark on the road to escape. However, as he was organizing his belongings, his thoughts drifted to Zhou Yilin. Although they didn’t have a particularly close relationship, Li Tong knew that his feelings for her were always present.

“Yilin…” Li Tong murmured her name in his heart. He hesitated for a long time, wondering if he should say goodbye to her or even call her. But in the end, he decided not to disturb her life. After all, there was no defined relationship between them, and he didn’t want to bring any trouble to her with his departure.

“I’ll be back when all this is over,” Li Tong silently vowed. He knew he had to focus on the current crisis and couldn’t let personal feelings cloud his judgment.

Once everything was ready, Li Tong finally made up his mind, packed his bags, and set out on the road to escape. He chose a remote place to hide temporarily, hoping to find a way out while evading capture. He knew that this was only a temporary departure, and the road ahead was still filled with unknown challenges. He had to be cautious, but he also understood that only by figuring out the source of his powers and identifying those who were after him could he truly escape this crisis.
