Awaken: Dying Light
A Long-Awaited Reunion

A Long-Awaited Reunion

As the months melted into a year, Jayden watched his sister blossom. Her initial cries, once a source of annoyance, now tugged at his heartstrings. A fierce protectiveness bloomed within him. Kiara wasn't just his sister; she was a part of him, a shared destiny woven from the same thread. He vowed silently, a promise etched deep in his tiny mind, to always be her protector, her rock against the storms of life.

In the meantime, tear slipped down Ruele's cheek as she spoke, her voice heavy with longing. "Hasn't he returned yet? How much longer this time, Mother?"

Valeria, her mother-in-law, reached out, her touch a warm comfort against Ruele's cool skin. "My sweet child, I share your pain. Elio carries a heavy burden, a duty that weighs him down as much as it does you. But know this," Valeria said, her voice firm yet gentle as she began to braid Ruele's hair, "his heart aches to be here, cradling you and the children in his arms."

"He fights not just for our world, but for the safety of every family within in," Valeria continued. "His sacrifice, though immense, safeguards a future where your children can grow strong, free, and loved."

Ruele sighed, the sound heavy with unshed tears. "I understand, Mother. It's just… the fear, the constant gnawing worry that this time…" Her voice trailed off, choked with emotion.

Valeria squeezed Ruele's hand, her eyes filled with understanding. "We must be strong, Ruele. For Elio, for the children. He needs to know that even in his absence, his family stands united, a beacon of love guiding him home."

Silence descended upon them, thick with the weight of Elio's absence. The mansion, once a haven of laughter and warmth, felt heavy with a melancholic stillness. Yet, amidst the quietude, a tremor, sudden and violent, ripped through the building. It was a sensation unlike any Jayden had ever experienced – the floor vibrating beneath him, a sense of the very world shifting. It passed as quickly as it came, leaving behind a bewildered silence.

A prickle of unease ran down Jayden's spine as Elora materialized before him. Her ability to appear and disappear at will remained a constant source of wonder, something out of a fantastical bedtime story from a life he couldn't quite grasp. Lost in contemplation, he barely registered the soft knock on the door.

"Madam, Master Elio has returned," the maid announced, her voice flat and emotionless. A spark of curiosity flickered in Jayden's eyes. Finally, his father returned.

The door creaked open, and a wave of anticipation washed over the room. Elio, his face etched with the weariness of battle, strode in, his presence commanding attention. Jayden's heart hammered in his chest, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling within him.

Orphaned at a young age in his past life, he had no memories of a father's embrace, a father's love. This man, this stranger, was now his father in this new life, a life filled with a family he cherished fiercely.

Elio's gaze swept the room, landing on Jayden and Kiara. A flicker of recognition, a wellspring of emotion, momentarily flooded his features before he extended a hand, his touch warm and gentle.

"Hello, my babies," he said, his voice rough with unspoken emotions. "It's been far too long."

Jayden hesitated, the unfamiliar gesture sending a jolt of uncertainty through him. He had grown accustomed to Ruele's gentle affection, Elora's playful prodding. This man, his father, was an unknown entity. Yet, a silent urge tugged at him, a yearning for a connection he couldn't quite understand.

Slowly, tentatively, he reached out, his tiny hand brushing against Elio's arm. A surge of emotions threatened to overwhelm him – confusion, curiosity, and a flicker of something deeper, something akin to… belonging?

Ruele watched the scene unfold, a twinge of surprise twisting her heart. Since his birth, Jayden had remained a solitary soul, content in his own world. She had only recently begun to bridge the gap between them, and seeing him so readily connect with Elio, a sliver of jealousy, sharp and unexpected, pricked at her.

Kiara, on the other hand, reacted differently. With a squeal of delight, she launched herself into Elio's arms, her tiny body wriggling with excitement. The sight of his children, so vibrant and full of life, brought tears to Elio's eyes.

Elio scooped Kiara up in a tight embrace, burying his face in her soft curls. The scent of baby powder and sunshine momentarily transported him away from the horrors of the battlefield. He showered her with kisses, his voice thick with emotion. "There's my little firecracker! Have you grown even taller since I left?"

Kiara giggled, her face buried in his chest. "Daddy! Daddy! Missed you!" she babbled excitedly, showering him with wet kisses.

Elio glanced at Ruele, a silent apology in his eyes. He knew the toll his long absences took on her, the burden she carried alone. Ruele offered him a strained smile, her gaze lingering on Jayden, who still sat perched on the edge of the plush armchair, a wary observer in this unfolding drama.

Elio cleared his throat, his gaze shifting to Jayden. The little boy hadn't moved, his large eyes taking in the scene with an intensity that both surprised and intrigued Elio. Here was his son, a child he barely knew, yet a connection bloomed in Elio's chest, warm and undeniable.

"Hello, Jayden," Elio said gently, extending a tentative hand towards the boy. He knew it might take time, that trust wouldn't be built overnight. But he had to start somewhere.

Jayden's brow furrowed in concentration as he studied Elio's hand. He wasn't used to physical affection, and this outstretched hand, so large and unfamiliar, sent a wave of uncertainty washing over him. He stole a glance at Ruele, seeking a silent reassurance.

Ruele gave him a small, encouraging smile. "It's alright, darling," she murmured. "That's your father."

Jayden's gaze flickered back to Elio's hand. He hesitated for a long moment, then, with a slowness that mirrored his cautious nature, reached out his own tiny hand. Their touch was brief, a mere brush of fingers, but for Elio, it felt like a dam breaking open. A wave of emotion surged through him – love, protectiveness, a yearning to bridge the gap between them.

"You've grown so much," Elio said, his voice thick with emotion. He longed to scoop Jayden into a hug, to shower him with affection, but something held him back, an unspoken understanding that this child needed things done on his terms.

Jayden didn't respond, but he didn't pull his hand away either. He continued to stare at Elio, his large eyes filled with a question Elio couldn't decipher. Was it wariness? Curiosity? Perhaps a flicker of something akin to… acceptance?

The moment stretched on, a silent conversation passing between father and son. Ruele watched, her heart swelling with a mixture of hope and trepidation. The road ahead wouldn't be easy, but for the first time, she felt a glimmer of optimism. Perhaps, just perhaps, they could build a family, a bond strong enough to weather any storm

"Ahem!"

"Oh, sorry darling, I was so caught up with the little devils that I even forgot I was home," scratching his head, Elio searched for a good excuse not to make his wife mad.

"How was it this time? 1 year and 6 months, Elio, this is too much," as they sat down with both their children in their arms, Ruele couldn't hold back her feelings.

"I know, darling, I know but-," said Elio.

Realizing that it wasn't good to discuss such matters and get sad in front of the children because it may influence their mood, Ruele took Kiara in her arms. "I will go and change her diaper," she said.

"Sure, honey, me and this big boy will play around a little."
