Book 1: Origin CHAPTER 8. FIRE NATION

I must be the first earthbender in the fire nation during the hundred-year war. I am not a prisoner either. I have certainly changed the future already. Hopefully, the avatar can still save the world. It is not like that I am going up against him. I am planning to help him. Not just with the war but also with air nomad culture.

My to-do list is for now. One: Stopping the death of Kya, Lu Ten, and possibly Azulon. Two: Give out knowledge of outside for against the war propaganda. Three: Save and protect air nomad culture. Four: Teach young children to protect them against earthbenders. Five: Get connections to the royal family.

I have nothing else planned. I think that this is too much but it is better to be confident than reserved with this. I know that I am not capable of doing anything more than this. I do not have enough time either.

The reason behind why I want to teach children is because some of them only fight once and their survival is the requirement for a fire nation´s growth after the war.

Captain Zhao has made me his adopted child but on paper, I am Zhao´s cousin´s child. I do not care about that title. It is not a bad title to have for now.

For some strange reason, Zhao seems to like me more as time passes. I am not trying to push that trust around. I do not think that I am allowed to do so just yet. I am close though.

I am going to be a transfer student starting tomorrow in firebending school. My reason being there I just as you might have known. School thinks that I am just someone to push the confidence of their students. Zhao has a plan to prove them wrong. He has seen with his own eyes how easy is to loss private firebenders life in the battlefield. School staff does not know how their teachings are faulty. He has nothing against the improvement of his status though.

(They are not going to play fairly. They will not allow the loss of their face no matter what. Do not injure anybody for life though.) Zhao

(So it is okay to break some bones when necessary.) Shamo

Zhao did not say anything else but he seems to think that there is nothing to be worried about. It seems like I can defend myself but I am on my own afterward. In other words. Nothing has changed with exchanging with Yu to Zhao. Strange. How do they differ? Scary. Those two might be related for real.

Morning of my first day.

Everyone looked at me. I am a transfer student. What did you expect?

(Good morning everyone. My name is Shamo. I come from earth kingdom and I am an earthbender even though I am a fire nation citizen. I have come to learn the culture of this great land and I am sure you will be more than hospitable toward me. Let´s spent future years with mutual respect and honor.) I introduced myself in such away.

(Is he a boy or girl?) (How long is he going to stay here?) (Is he a savage?) (How old is he?) (?...)

(No more question. We are going to start the class. Now everyone. Show your loyalty to the Firelord.) Teacher

Everyone went toward the poster of the Firelord and started to recite. Zhao had taught me to do so. Naturally, I only learned only the words and not the meaning behind them.

Two hours later was combat training.

(I think you are more than interested in experience real earthbending but do not forget to show what fire nation is capable of doing.) Teacher

We went to the grounds where was an only medium sized rock. Everything else was made from metal and wood. I did not expect anything less. There was another student from different classes watching me.

In front of me came the best firebending student from here or at least that is what I assume. I was prepared for this. When I was searched I had hidden some sand in my shoes. I had also taken some soil and mold from the flower jar. I have compressed them to a small size.

(Fight starts, now.) Teacher

I was not in a hurry. The student was surprised that I was not trying to attack him.

Some reason people think that only with an action you could get control of the situation. I have found it more effective to act unexpectedly.

(Hurry up and start already!)

To my surprise girl´s voice was familiar to me. I was not sure where I had heard of it. I did not have time to think since my opponent made his move.

He spins around and formed a fire wave toward me. He was aiming to my feet. He is smart.

I stomped my one feet to the ground which allowed me to bend sand to block only the fire heading in my direction. I am not going to defend those how are watching.

My opponent was not done yet. He was running toward me. He was punching fireballs toward me.

I squat down this allowed me to hide behind the sand while fire came over me. This allowed me to take compressed earth and sent it toward my opponent´s leg. He was not expecting to be hit while I was hiding. This caused him to kneel toward me. He was suspicious someone was helping me.

I was not so kind to not take advantage of the situation. I bent the earth into his clothes for later use. I was going to provoke him.

(Did you notice that I have not moved my right leg at all? This must be embarrassing for you.) Shamo

This made his attack more furious but it became easier to read. As long as no one interferes, I will become victorious. Naturally, I was planning to defend against those too.

He seems to have forgotten about the rock in the field. naturally, I bent the rock toward my opponent from his side. That knocked him out.

(Do we continue?) Shamo

(Fight is over but are you ready for the next one.) Teacher

(Of course. I will just take earth on his clothes back to me.) Shamo

I did not have enough time to do so. I was attacked by three students from behind. I only had sand which was no way enough. I choose to make a change.

I made sand clouds by breaking the medium rock and my sand. In other words. Neither I or them could see anything. I do not have any earth to bend anymore except those around me. I went to close combat.

They were easy to find. Fireballs made too much noise and they were hitting their fellow students. Thanks to this distraction I changed my plan. I went to the knocked-out student. I took compressed earth back to me. To my surprise, he had a needle which I assume to be poisoned. I tasted it with my tongue and spit it out. It was paralyzing poison. Not deathly but enough to make me angry. I made an earth needle from the earth and moisten it up with the poison.

Rest went simply by waiting and listening.

Bumi was right about that key of earthbending is neutral jing. I had whole control of the fight from beginning to the end even though they made the first move.

Nobody was happy about my victory and no student was interested to try since they did not know they were paralyzed by poison and not by rocks. There was one person how was interested to tell her father what happened today at school.
