AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER FANFICTION: RETURN TO THE EARTH
Book 1: Origin CHAPTER 16. SOUTHERN AIR TEMPLE

Book 1: Origin CHAPTER 16. SOUTHERN AIR TEMPLE

The first thing I did was trying to find an escape path. Not for myself but to see if someone could have escaped from here. I have not found any proves of that. They must have been confident of no one could come here. There is nothing defending anyone from those who come here. I have no idea how and where firebenders came from. Make it even stranger is the fact that there is a spearman over here. My understanding of spear and airbenders are clear. The spear is weak against airbenders. Even arrows can be way more dangerous.

I am so depressed. Everywhere I see, I saw destruction and suffering for both parties. It looks like no one survived from either party. That makes sense. Fire burns oxygen which causes respiration problems at high altitudes. They must have passed out by lack of breath. Almost all the people I saw were out of weapons and hands below the neck. They must have suffered enormously. Both air- and firebenders gain strength from breathing.

No wonder people believe air nomads having an army since no one returned. Maybe they even thought avatar had sacrificed his life to end all the attackers.

Unknown to me I had forgotten the cold but I was starting to suffer from high altitude. I choose to return to the entrance since there is no point risking my life for nothing. I should make sure that everyone arrives back.

(How was your time?) Oki had arrived back before me and my “bodyguards”.

(Lack of air is a large problem here. I did not take into account it.) Shamo

(It is surprising to see you are not perfect. I assumed you were trained but you were not.) Oki

(How are you doing then?) Shamo

(Firebending students have to experience breathing training from a young age. Not many take it seriously but it has proved to be effective. Both firepower and control rise after doing this training. An added bonus is high prowess in all altitudes. I doubt anyone here will suffer any problems. I was ready here in case something happens.) Oki

(That makes a lot of sense. There is no training like that with earth nation. I have always wondered why airbenders did not think earthbender like me coming must have been because of this. I could easily cause a landslide without me intending to do so. Airbenders could just move next mountain. To earthbender we have no choice like that.) Shamo

I choose to call down and go to the ship. It is sad I accomplished nothing. I should have trained before coming here. I hope we can stay here longer. I do not want this to end like that.

After a short break, I noticed my problems must have been caused by my work digging upwards. I should not have tried to continue under those conditions. I was planning to try again in few hours.

After one hour.

I was back on top. I had chosen my destination carefully. I was planning to go to the warehouse. There could be many things left behind there. I doubt I would find anything new if I went to the temple. All valuable must have been taken in the past.

The room was full of gliders. These would mean a lot to Aang. Good thing these will not take much room. I should try to fix and restore without damaging the historic value of these. To my positive surprise, the next warehouse was full of parts of these gliders. With these, I could fix them easily.

It seemed that all the warehouses were left untouched. The reason behind was found easily. The ground below it had been heavily damaged most likely because of the battle. No one would be brave enough to enter. It was easy for to me make things less plummet danger and more stable.

This improved my mood. I am thinking of staying here for longer times. Unfortunately, I was reminded of cold air. I have nothing against coldness, but in this environment, it becomes worse.

I have no plans to become a guru or neet. I should not stay here. I doubt that I had the choice since I am nine years old.

I used the rest of the time fixing everything I could with my earthbending. There was a wall and ceiling at breaking points. So I made sure they would last until the war ends.

(That is one big group.) Shamo

(We think that is the body of an avatar although it seems too big for 12-years old. It was surrounded by a huge platoon. All of them ended up dead before they could attack him. We have no idea how he managed to do so.) Oki

(My idea is lack of air. Comet powers up your firebending but to my understanding, it will not change the amount of air needed to do so. There is a chance they died because of their attack while Airbender endures. They put him in a situation where he could not dodge. Airbenders are not adept at direct defense to my understanding. Especially against firebenders who get stronger by the air.) Shamo

(People are divided on what we should do with them. I do not think even us could become the lightest bit happy by burying them together.) Oki

(I have no idea how air nomads buried themselves. I think it is up to you how you do it. Just do not throw it from the cliff. It will make a bad taste to my mouth. I have an idea where we could put it. There was a statue of some monk at the front door. I can carry it and bury it. It will be fast.) Shamo

I do not know would be bad for Aang to see his friend buried in front of his statue. No. This way he might even become happy since it was not clear if he died at the war or old age. At least this will show that not all firebenders are bad persons. He got that message in time but no harm was done by letting him be sure by making it ahead of time.

I am tempted to make note of the which said: Monk Gyatso´s final words to his friend. I am not going to let them take you away from me.

These words might cause Aang even more suffering but he kind of needs to know how far Gyatso was willing to go for him.

Spirit library test explained that monks could not leave their posts unless he is willing to give up ever returning. Aang could have the least and come back but Gyatso did not have that choice. He most likely would have lost his ability to bend air cause of this.

Airbending is about freedom. Aang could have lost his ability to bend air if he would have followed the monks' orders.

I have speculated that if the water bender losses all of his or her human contact then they would lose the ability to bend. Waterbenders are always been iconic leaders with closeness with people. Even Hama had her prisoners. That would explain why waterbending became rare during the war. Loss of loved ones and rest leaving everyone else behind. There are hardly any waterbenders without brother or sister.

These four elements sure are interesting. They seem to be simple but they are one of the most complex systems out there. I had hope of figuring out the secrets of airbending but I was enlightened on how waterbending works. The world works the most surprising ways.

Sadly, I could not figure out how firebenders got here. I am not positive that they could have flown here. Not carrying spear at least unless someone had weapons stored before hands. Wait! Could it be?

I run to the area where the most spear-carrying people were buried. In that area, there was collapsed building which was burned years ago.

I started to break it to see what was inside it. Unfortunately, my instinct was proved correct. It was a warehouse full of cold weapons. They were not made by firebenders. They were made with the idea of Airbender using it. Could it be? Were airbenders planning to go to war?

I had no time to wonder what I should do since we were heading away at any minute. I choose to destroy all evidence before spies could look at it. They had to be made by the idea of defending. Why then there was obvious sent of decayed poison and gunpowder?

I could not ever find out the truth since I destroyed evidence. I do not think I can tell anyone about this.

I am scared of this world became darker than it was in the show. The thing could become a lot worse.
