(Chief Hakoda. Could you explain why we live with your family?) Oki
(I think this boy can explain it to you.) Hakoda
(It is because their daughter is a waterbender.) Shamo
(That does explain it.) Oki
(I am against it. Why should soldiers from Fire nation stay with our home? We do not need to do this to them. Why not throw them out or simply kill them. They even know Katara is waterbender. Do you not remember what happened to all other waterbenders in the past?) Sokka
(It is because I am chief and a father. We can not avoid the fact that this is the first peaceful approach they had made in the war. This is our best chance to get access to the northern tribe. Our culture is dying. As a chief, I have to protect it. On my father's side, I must give Katara all help she can get with her bending. Nobody can teach it here and it is the symbol of danger since all benders have been taken before. I must give her all the changes to her find the future she wants to have. That boy seems to have a dream which allows her to get that.) Hakoda
(They could be spies no they surely are. You do not need to make this change for me. This is too dangerous. Why else would mother act as a waterbender? You know this is dangerous why then would you make it even more dangerous to you?) Katara
(You do not need to worry about it. It is a parent's job to keep their children safe and make them keep the dream.) Kya
After their talk, they started to make food for all of us. It does not smell or look good but I am not going to compline. I have eaten many things worse than this. Fortunately, it was kinda good. I just had to keep breathing with my mouth. Oki was not doing okay.
(We do not have many questions so I think you can ask for now. What do you want to know?) Shamo
(Can you teach me waterbending?) Katara
(Can I take something out of my pocket?) Shamo
(No you can not.) Sokka
Everyone else sighed. I still pointed to one of my pockets. Kya came and took a scroll from my pocket.
Before anyone could say anything I said. (Open it.)
It was a waterbending scroll.
(Where did you take this?) Sokka
(I bought it. I did not bother where they got it from but I can assume. It is up to you if you want to use it but I can teach personally.) Shamo
(From where would you start?) Hakoda
(I would start with sources of waterbending. Of course, they are only my understandings of how waterbending works but my theories seem to have worked feel in the past.) Shamo
(Are there rulers against hearing them from outside the family?) Kya
(No. But if you get access to the northern tribe, then there will be a change to this rule.) Shamo
(What do you mean by that?) Hakoda
(Northern tribe is a patriarchal society. No waterbending lessons from a woman outside the healing studies. I do not think girls could learn anything outside healing abilities.) Shamo
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
(That is so stupid.) Sokka
(Do not be rude.) Kya
(I completely agree with him. Almost everywhere I have been things have been like this. I know only two places where is gender equality in the world. Here and Fire nation.) Shamo
(What!) Everyone including Oki
(Even you did not know.) I was surprised even Oki did not know this.
(I had no idea.) Oki
(I think we should change the subject. How can someone that does not bend water teach how to do it? I am sure we all are interested to hear the answer.) Hakoda
(I have taught earth- and firebending before. It seemed to work for me. I have studied ways of multiple different cultures. Not just bending but all kinds of things. My earthbending allows me to look at different things at this time. When I am grown-up than my chances to do so will lessen. I am trying to look at what I want to do in the future. I have a feeling that I am going to be a teacher. My current dream is to find a place where people from all kinds of places will come to learn together to improve themselves. For that reason, I do not know if I can teach your daughter but my dream becomes impossible if I fail. Failure is not my largest concern though. Not even trying makes me scared. I do not want regrets because of the danger of failure.) Shamo
At my words, Sokka seemed to have forgotten they were present of the Fire Nation. That kind of makes sense. He was the same kind of person. He even became a judge to earth's kingdom which was unheard of for them. He even was a foreigner to them. Maybe we could become good friends.
Everyone inside seemed to notice Sokka´s thoughts. I should take advantage of it.
(Could I prove myself by sparing with your son?) Shamo
Sokka ran straight outside which caused everyone to chuckle. I do not think I need permission.
(I am going to use only waterbending movement techniques or at least something close to them. Waterbending techniques redirect their opponent's power against them. This forces them to do multiple things at the same time. This part is opposite to y earthbending which allows them to do simple attack which is proved to be very powerful. Many think firebending is the opposite of waterbending and they are. Firebending uses power in themself to their opponent but I believe the most powerful firebenders can using waterbending techniques and vice versa. You can believe waterbenders are not doing simple punch but a lot more than that. I think out of all the bending styles waterbending is the most difficult to start learning but the easiest to master. Waterbending amateur can master waterbending even a week to my understanding. It is impossible for all other bending styles. I am not saying it will happen but there is a change to it happening. I stop talking since I took enough time with it.) Shamo
Sokka was ready with his boomerang. Our spar started with a boomerang throw. I took it into my hands circled myself and used his throwing strength to throw it back. To my surprise, he managed to do the same to my counterattack. I had no idea he could do it. No boomerang against boomerang fights was in the series.
It is strange since the greatest physical strength to people is their throwing strength. No other creature can throw things as well as we do. In the avatar series there hardly had any throwing weapons. It kind of makes sense since bending replaces most throwing skills.
(I am going to surrender. I know I can not beat you this way.) Shamo
It took everything from being to dodge his attack. I could try to enter close range but then the fight would only be about trading hits. I am not planning to try anything like it ever.
(I apologize I could not show anything more. From that movement I could see if he had been bender, he would have been good at it.) Shamo
Naturally rest of the day Sokka was full of himself. I could not retaliate since it would have made me even worse than him. I am not planning to go to his level.
It was chosen I would start teaching children about their culture and life outside here. From the side of it, I am going to teach waterbending.
My reputation is both good and bad since the sparring match. Children doubt I could teach anybody about anything since I lost. As for adults, they look at me in positive light since I surrendered without hassle.
Next day morning.
My bending lessons start today. I am going to it.
It is a warmer day than normal. This made it easier for me.
Only two of us are in here. But to my surprise, Katara was training with the scroll. She has not noticed me coming here.
I choose to sit and wait.
She is not doing well. Sure, she can move water but not the way she wants to.
Katara was always the one who learned the best by herself. I should give her room to move especially since I can not waterbed.
It took hours but I noticed Sokka was looking at how we were doing.
(Katara. How your lessons are doing..?) Sokka froze since cold water went directly to him and froze him to his place.
