Wit soon realized that lifting himself off the ground was too taxing and energy reliant for him to use it for more than a few seconds before getting dizzy. It made his body increasingly warm and the static dizziness would last longer after each use. After his fifth try, he decided maybe this wasn’t the best use of whatever energy reserves he had stored.
Now I just need to figure out how to unstick the nucleus attached to the ceiling. Reaching his hand out again, he closed his eyes allowing his senses to focus and feel through the static his body released. After a few seconds, he began to see a blurry rendition of the sap with the glowing crystal core in his mind's eye and felt for the small field of tingles that it released around itself.
Wit thought about that feeling he got when he had the amber nucleus floating between his two hands earlier. Magnets, that's gotta be how it works. It truly did remind him of when he would play with the polarized metals in the sandbox during his free time in his habitat pod.
They were some of his favorite materials to work with when he was exploring the things he could build.
If they did indeed work like magnets, then that must mean that he and the nucleus were emitting polarized magnetic fields at the moment. One positive the other negative, and the static is what lets him control the settings on both ends of the spectrum. When he levitated it up to the ceiling he must’ve had them both set to negative to repel each other.
But that doesn’t explain why it's still stuck and won't get pulled back down when he's trying to attract it; rather it does the complete opposite and attracts him instead. What did I change in my first attempt again? I’m pretty sure I reversed something. Wit thought as he wiggled his fingers in the air.
Once he understood that these things were indeed magnetic he started to fiddle with the positive and negative settings with more ease. He noticed that he could either lift himself up or try the impossible challenge of pushing the fallen Rebirth door from its resting place. It seems the nucleus was an anchor for his negative and positive forces.
That must have been what I flipped, other than just the positive and negative settings there was also the anchor setting. The second the thought entered his head he felt it in the tingles and switched the anchor from on to off.
The ball immediately lost its magnetic hold but was still stuck to the top due to the sticky sap; adjusting the poles had it flying into his open palm with a squelch.
“Mathematical,” Wit whispered while thinking furiously as he stared at the slimy sap ball that oozed between his fingers. This gave him something to work with when it came to his immediate survival. He thought back to his ‘badass’ moment when he rocked that bug in its eye, what if it was the nucleus instead of the rock next time; he might be able to do some actual damage.
Reminded of his assailants, he thought it was too long since he last checked his surroundings. Getting up he looked through the crack he shimmied his way through, panning his eyes around revealed nothing of note. The dark silence unnerved Wit, and without realizing it, he subconsciously squeezed the nucleus hard for reassurance.
It popped in his hand and the liquid sap flowed underneath the protective [exoBark] covering it, disappearing from view. Wit wasn’t even surprised, he was beginning to think that he was going to have to adopt a pretty open mind moving forward. Now how to get it back out without having to injure myself? He thought with an irritated flick of his ear.
It ended up being pretty simple, he still had a connection with the small nucleus even when it was in his body. All he had to do was adjust the polarization and it was floating in his hand again, coming out the same way it went in. Watching it form was fascinating, the clear sap started off with no crystal core as that seemed to form last through some sort of process Wit couldn’t make out.
He wondered if he could summon more than one, but didn't feel any other connections in his body so thought that one was probably his current limit.
Deciding it was about time to go search for water and food, he put the nucleus next to his shoulder and had it float there using the conductive [exoBark] around his neck as the controller. He looked up one last time to see the rebirth door only to be greeted by overhanging darkness, but he knew it was there.
So with a look of determination, he crawled his way back out of the small opening like a bug emerging out of its den.
Once out he stayed completely still behind some debris by the entrance looking for any sign of movement. His irises were full saucers picking up as much as they could in the dark environment, while the small nucleus gave off the barest hint of light for him to work with. His ears twitched and rotated searching for the slightest disturbances in the vicinity.
Wit felt nervous being back out here, he knew one mistake with the light-spitting creatures spelled certain doom. He could tell the nerves were holding him back and making him hesitate, he's been behind the same blasted rock for the last ten minutes and nothing has changed. Taking a deep breath he sent out the sap nucleus to get a further and better view of his surroundings.
The dim amber light revealed huge jutting roots, fallen concrete pillars, and linear beds of fuzzy green vegetation.
That wasn't all, it also revealed more clearly the scorch marks littered throughout the area caused by the bugs. Once the nucleus got to maybe twenty feet away, Wit couldn’t send the sap any further without losing the static connection.
Without seeing much of anything after circling around the area he swapped the polarization to negative and positive attracting the nucleus back to him.
All of a sudden from the dark came a neon greenish-yellow light that came to life near the nucleus, illuminating the area with its eerie glow.
Wits heart sped up seeing the bug from a distance, it was currently above the floating orb of sap clinging to the side of a pillar. Finally getting a good look at the creature, he noticed that it was a flat and sleek-edged black thing rimmed with glowing yellow lines and a red helmet-like covering over its head that shielded its bulbous eyes.
It looked like a bigger version of the [firefly], Wit noted chiding himself for not getting a reading on the bug when he had a chance,

Though it was way bigger than the [firefly] it was smaller than the ones that attacked him hours prior, more the size of a cat than a dog. Without leaving the wall it perked its glowing layered abdomen towards the nucleus and released a beam of curvy greenish-yellow light in its direction.
Curious as to what would happen if the sap was struck, Wit watched with anticipation.
The squiggly light zoomed its way to the nucleus only to curve around and circle the spherical sap twice before locking on and beaming into it directly. The nucleus began to glow with increased lumens, casting away the remaining shadows with its warm amber light as it seemingly absorbed the energy.
Through the static force, he could feel its increasing heat and oddly enough its weight seemed to get heavier. There was also a layer of potential energy giving Wit a vague feeling.
He could somehow tell that the nucleus could take a lot more than what this wispy creature was letting out. Seconds after its release the light sputtered out, leaving the hovering bulb of sap slowly dimming shortly after the assault. The insect spread its wings and took flight towards its hot meal with excitement.
“Not today,” Wit whispered as he jerked it out of the way right before its mandibles were able to snatch it out of the air.
The bug's antenna waved around in confusion before its compound eyes caught the light of the moving nucleus racing toward its head. The creature dodged the wobbly projectile easily and with two loud clicks of its mandibles and pulsing lights from its abdomen, it tried flying away.
Unfortunately for it, the sticky sap ball trailed after it under Wits’ control as he twitched his fingers behind the rock. The bug was fast but Wit had surprised it, giving him enough time to adjust the nucleus’s trajectory and have it stick to one of the back legs.
The creature barely took notice of its new passenger surprisingly, and not wanting to lose connection with the bug's hasty flight. Wit put a static lock on the nucleus and switched the polarization, then just as they were about to leave his static range; he pulled. The leg of the insect was dragged through the air carrying the rest of the panicking creature along with it.
Wit could feel the frazzled dizziness creeping up, but it wasn’t that bad due to the bugs' lightweight. It got increasingly worse though as the bug seemed to catch itself with its wings again, and it began fighting his pull.
But the cat-sized creature wasn't stronger than him physically and so before it could get any bright ideas he threw his arm down; dragging it to a large chunk of concrete laying on the floor and locking it there.
It started scrambling madly, destroying a cluster of bioluminescent mushrooms growing in the fuzzy green lines and yanking its leg trying to free itself.
I can't believe that worked. Wit thought as he noticed that even though its glowing back seemed to pulse in some sort of distress signal, it didn't try to charge up another wispy beam of light.
After feeling secure that he had the bug locked, he looked around to see if any other bugs were reacting to its flickering lights or the commotion.
After waiting a minute or two and seeing no backup coming, he decided to get a closer look. Carefully making his way toward the now somewhat calm bug, he got right behind it from its blind spot.
Two questions went through Wits’ mind as he stood over the insect. He first asked himself whether or not he should kill it, as it would be as easy as using one of these rocks to mash its skull in.
The second was if it was edible because he was beginning to grow ravished after eating nothing since his rebirth. Those two questions began to mingle with one another.
The thought of killing the large bug had his heart pumping and his head light, he's never killed anything in his whole life. But wasn’t this what he left the safety of that alcove for, for the search of food; what did he assume food looked like? This wasn't the old tower anymore, where food just appeared in the cafeteria— he needed to prepare it himself now; from start to finish.
Not knowing when he would get such easy prey again and the fact that his time in the open was limited, he needed to make a choice before the situation changed. Poindexter also needs that data. Wit thought with finality and a set jaw having made his decision, conveniently omitting the fact that Poindexter said ‘alive’ or dead.
Unlocking the nucleus’ static hold on its leg and having it crawl underneath the bug's body towards its head was quick and simple. It tried to take off again once it noticed its leg was free, but Wit locked its lower jaw to the floor giving it zero forward movement. He slowly walked around it towards its locked face with a large piece of broken concrete in both hands.
Wits heart raced and his vision swam, looking into the insect's large compound eyes and seeing the frantic twitches of its antennas while it scrambled its legs behind it trying to gain any type of leverage to escape. Its mandibles clicked nonstop like it was pleading for him to show mercy and spare its life as he lifted the rock over his head. His breathing was erratic standing there focused solely on the bug's red helmet.
I’m gonna do it. He thought with conviction, so with a primal yell he set his arms to the task of dashing its brains across the floor; but just before he could complete the gruesome endeavor, another thought entered his mind— Having him change course mid-swing hitting the spot right next to the bug's head instead.
Wit backed up frantically trying to calm his hyperventilating breath from freaking out about what he was about to do.
He shook his shaky hands out and rolled his shoulders pulling himself together while staring at the still frantic bug. Having made his new decision, Wit ran back to the hidden alcove while dragging the bug behind him through the air. Once he reached the dark crack he forced the bug head first in, before following in himself.
Once they were both inside the space, Wit locked the confused insect onto the far-off wall and waited until it calmed down.
Instead of immediately doing any live body scans for Poindexter, he opened up his species {status} option on the Omnitrix. With a grin, he said, “I think I might have just come up with the best idea yet Poindexter.”
