When Wit eventually woke out of his well-needed rest, the sunlight that was peeking through the fissure in the wall was gone; but the second floor was far from dark.
With the disappearance of the sun, the dim biolight of the moss illuminated the area around him in a beautiful hue of green. Before he could rub the sleep out of his eyes, he was jostled by one of the many [plasmawisps] pushing and flying past him to escape out of the crack into the dark night.
He was practically thrown and shoved into the cold pond before he could muster any strength to protest. The refreshing water did wake him up enough for him to realize through his [hive] link, that wisp One and Two were long gone. They felt so far and distant they must have left way ahead of this group.
“What's going on?” Wit sputtered, pushing his wet hair out of his face as he observed the mass exodus of different-sized wisps.
He felt a bit peeved at their perceived abandonment, but through the link, he could tell they didn't have much choice. They were both flooded with the strong urge to fly in the open air and enveloping that feeling was something else, something far more primal and heady that made Wits’ face heat up.
“Wit, It seems that these [plasmawisps] may be nocturnal in nature. From my observations and previous analysis on the designated name ‘Wisp One’, most of the nest was in hiding and undergoing their sleeping cycle when you climbed your way to the first and second floor, but once the sun began to set they became much more active.” Poindexter helpfully provided.
“Nocturnal, referring to activities done at night.” Wit defined out of habit, but then questioned.
“But there are so many of them, what could they all possibly be doing all at once?” Wit asked in awe watching the swarm of blinking lights pass overhead while floating in the small glowing pond, none of them seemed to notice him; it was a beautiful sight to behold.
To be a casual observer of these dangerous creatures and for some reason not feel afraid even with One and Two, not by his side was a bit odd to Wit. Almost as if he wasn't dodging literal make-rocks-melt lasers a few hours ago.
But he couldn't deny the underlying thrill at the prospect of danger so close, Wit wondered if these urges that he was experiencing were normal.
“Would you like the rest of the analysis that we made prior with the [plasmawisp]?
“Yea let's hear it Dex” Wit replied languidly, swishing both his tails lazily underneath him keeping himself afloat.
“Like I was saying before, this class of Insecta is most closely related to what was once commonly known as a [firefly] like the one we have in storage, a type of aerial beetle that uses its abdomen bioluminescent lights for communication and mating.
“To answer your question about their nightly activities, I assume they are preparing to mate while migrating and increasing their population numbers if they are anything like their distant cousins.
They do have quite a few additions to their basic forms as you’ve seen, possibly due to their diet of [sapslugs] and [ambersnails] they have developed ways to process and utilize the high amounts of plasma located in the energy-rich creatures.
There was another substance that was included in their diet I couldn't place at first, but with your input of the neural [Mycelium] [Moss] I realized they also eat the seemingly abundant vegetation ”
“Should I load the database for [mycelium] and [moss]?
“Save it for later, I'm more curious about this mating thing. From what you're saying they leave and repopulate while doing so, is mating just laying eggs like the ones behind us?”
“Mating is..” Poindexter started but was immediately cut off by Wit.
“You know what, I'd rather find out myself, I’ve been meaning to test out another organix trait [multiperspectivity]. This would be the perfect time to try it out while gaining some information.”
“Understood Wit, current data for that specific organix is limited. Usage is recommended,
“Okay as long as we're on the same page. Pull up the [multiperspectivity] panel, I want to see what's highlighted again.” WIt ordered.
The pixel sand in his Omnitrix floated above his wrist creating a three-dimensional replica of his head down to his shoulders with his [exo] tail frozen in a snaking curve behind him.
Wit still couldn't get over the mathematical fact that he had a portable sandbox on his wrist and how impressive it was. He knew he had barely scratched the surface of what it could truly do, but that was for later he thought.
Focusing on the projection, he noticed that beneath the fur on each side of his head below his feline ears glowed a flat chitinous plate. It framed his head and connected to the base of his thick [exo] tail almost like a clamp, he had a brief flashback of his rebirth and the thing that wiggled in his brain. He shuddered at the sudden intrusive thought.
Shaking his head at the mental image, he noticed the highlights traced the inner working off the flat plates on each side of his head alongside the inner spool of wiring that he used to connect to the bugs with his [hive] organix. From what Wit could infer through the bioscans, It seemed the [multiperspectivity] organix was piggy-backing off the connective tether to gather visual data.
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
Feeling like he had somewhat of a basic grasp on how the organix works, he closed the panel along with his eyes letting his instincts guide him.
He started by spreading his awareness from the top of his head and slowly scanned down to see if anything stood out. He had to first pass his [synesthesia] organix that took up what Poindexter described as the lobes of his brain. He was still unsure what that one was supposed to do.
It was interesting and somewhat unsettling that he could somewhat feel the borders of his brain now, but he figured it's more useful to be able to, rather than not be able to; all things considered.
It was around his temples that he eventually felt something new, and once his awareness fell on it, he immediately felt an itchy’ cramp-like sensation centered around both sides of his head.
So almost like un-cramping a tight muscle, he squeezed his eyes tight in mental concentration until something twitched loose in relief around his temples.
It seemed just like with most of his organix, the activation was second nature because when he opened his eyes he was hit with instant vertigo due to the sudden view change. He couldn't tell which wisp’s point of view he was using but what he was seeing blew his mind.
“Wow, just wow. I figured it out, Dex,” Wit whispered in awe, now with an opaque green tinted membrane visor covering the upper half of his face.
Though the virtual image he was seeing was dark and blurry, he got the general idea of what was being shown because of the wisps' seemingly high vantage point. It was currently clinging to a large branch jutting out of what had to be the [Yggdrasils] leafy canopy.
It was a truly dazzling sight, with what had to be hundreds of wisps flashing their lights in what looked like a large bowl filled with jungle and cloudy mist.
‘The Cradle.’ Wit thought; seeing the familiar monstrous construction from a new angle for the first time. It was blurry and far off but the pale moonlight and the hundreds of wisps lights illuminated the enclosed terrarium somewhat.
The wall that was somehow at one point keeping the shimmer out of Babel’s premises stretched far and wide, a testament to how important its duty used to be. Thinking about it now, wouldn’t that mean he’s been breathing shimmer this whole time? What even was shimmer Wit wondered not for the first time, the only information he ever got from the Guides was that it was a particle in the air, hazardous to humankind. The only thing that came to mind was the phenomenon quintessence,
Those cold-hearted zeroes sure knew how to give me the runaround. He knew they knew the real…
Sudden movement through the visors peripherals and a spike of fear shooting through his link with wisp Two, focused Wit back on current matters. The two things happening simultaneously at least answered who’s perspective he was currently seeing from, but it didn’t answer what the source of the fear was. The large wisp was now agitated and began preparing itself to fly off its branch.
Wisp Two got roughly four feet of air before the insect got stuck in what looked like transparent cables. The wisp instantly panicked, foregoing all reason, it attempted to shake itself off but the cables seemed to have a mind of their own. They snaked around Two with precision, entangling and knotting itself ever tighter around the creature's body to the point of constriction.
Wit felt every emotion that wisp Two was currently going through, the clawing fear of what was to come, the cloudy confusion of why this was happening to it, the sinking desperation creating a pit in the creature's stomach so deep, Wit for a second thought he would fall in. It yearned for help begging internally for some type of outside intervention to prevent its death.
Wit gasped when Two found their connection and spoke directly to him. Not in words but exactly how he would communicate with them, with intent, concept, and memories. Memories of two protecting Wit hours prior from multiple curious wisps attempting to get a nibble out of him while he slept. It was now asking for him to protect it as the wisp protected him, and Wit hesitated not knowing what to do.
This was all happening so fast.
“Wait a second, you haven’t used your plasma yet, beam your way out Two!” Wit tried to convey the order through their link but there was a flash of bright light in the visor forcing Wit to close his eyes while searing hot pain radiated off of Twos’ link.
All of a sudden the connection was gone leaving a ghostly echo of Twos' suffering ringing in his mind.
His membrane visors retreated back, freeing his vision and letting him know that [multiperspectivity] ended.
Everything was relatively peaceful once again, his perspective was back to him being alone floating in the pond. Wit was at a loss on how to feel about what just happened, Two was undoubtedly dead and his hesitation most likely cemented it. He could’ve possibly saved him if only he reacted faster, or if he wasn’t so passive during the whole encounter.
It had to be some other creature hiding in the branches and foliage. Something higher up on the food chain, as it gave Two zero chance to resist its devious trap. Now there was no doubt there were things far more powerful and cunning outside [Yggdrasils] walls.
Two’s death was so sudden it didn't feel real; even if Wit could still hear a faint echo of his last breath the quickness of it all left him numb. All it did was prove how ill-equipped he currently was for the outside, how utterly insignificant he was in the grand scheme of things. He looked at himself lazily floating in the pond and scowled.
He couldn’t allow this travesty to happen again, his resources were nil to none. If he wanted to be a significant cog to the grand working of Eærth, to do the impossible, he couldn't be this weak and slow to react. He couldn’t allow his minions to die such pointless deaths, Wit squeezed his hands into fists so tight, static began building up and his heart pulsed with heat.
With determination bouncing off his multi-colored fractal eyes, he reactivated the [multiperspectivity] organix, falling into One's perspective.
One was currently flying low, dipping in and out of the heavy cloudy mist that obscured the jungles ground level. He was chasing another wisp with fever and extreme anticipation. Wit could barely make the other wisp out through the dense mist and both of the wisps' high-speed maneuvers, but its yellowish-green bulb kept it from completely disappearing allowing him and One to keep track of its location.
Wit wanted to recall One back to his side immediately but he could tell this was very important to the creature so he let it play out without interfering. He was still curious as to what mating was and he figured with one's excitement he was about to find out.
That didn't mean he wasn't paying rapt attention to One's surroundings, preparing mentally to give out a mental order in case something went wrong like with Two.
Out of nowhere, a bigger faster wisp zoomed past One causing the wisp's vision to spin out of control for a few seconds before he re-aligned himself and continued the chase at a slower clip; determination waning at the sight of competition. Wit huffed in annoyance, how can he give up so easily?
He poured his determination through their threaded link, pushing One past his insecurities and allowing him to flutter his wings just a bit faster.
C'mon One, you had eyes on her first. Wit didn't know exactly what his wisp wanted with the other wisp but he knew it meant a lot to One, and they both could use a win right about now.
